IMDb Top 300 Data Contributors for 2022 (and Happy New Year 2023 from IMDb)

IMDb Top 300 Data Contributors for 2022 (and Happy New Year 2023 from IMDb)

Included below is our end-of-year message to IMDb's top 300 data contributors for 2022.

Introduction and Thanks

Hello. Bonjour. Guten Tag. Hola. Salve. Olá. नमस्ते.

Welcome to the 28th edition of our annual letter to thank IMDb’s worldwide data contributor community. The theme for the letter this year is international expansion as you may have guessed from the greetings above. In 2022 we added support for eight additional country/language pairs on the IMDb website, so in addition to US/English, we now offer a growing number of pages and content in these combinations: Canada/French; France/French; Germany/German; India/Hindi; Italy/Italian; Brazil/Portuguese; Spain/Spanish; and Mexico/Spanish.

I am IMDb’s Founder & CEO and one of the highlights of my year is always sharing the news in this letter and celebrating all of our data contributors, especially those who made the Top 300 list by volume. Thanks to the support from all of our customers, we have had another exciting year at IMDb as we continue to help IMDb power the creation, discovery and enjoyment of entertainment everywhere. We launched IMDb in 1990 and the tradition of sending this letter began in 1995 if you would like to catch-up on any of the 27 previous editions. This year our team members Ramsey and Jay co-wrote this letter with me by providing the special section below on contribution improvements. We are all part of a team who are delighted to serve you and whose work this letter also represents.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed any factual data, voted in our ratings poll, written a review, shared a list, voted in a user contributed poll or added to IMDb in any other way. Every contribution is important and you never know when just one piece of extra data will help another customer answer their question or make a viewing (or listening) discovery. Once again, we are pleased with audience growth directly on IMDb and via other IMDb powered devices or experiences. The content you provide is reaching an ever-wider audience and now in even more local languages. To learn more about contributing, please visit our Contributor Zone.

The Numbers

We have a new approach to sharing the Top Contributors table this year via the Contributor Leaderboard which means we can count submissions right up until the year end and anyone with more than 100 approved items in 2022 can discover their own position in the rankings. Based upon the monthly leaderboard, we have been updating a running total for 2022 weekly across December with the final version published early on 1 January 2023 at https://contribute.imdb.com/leaderboard/2022/

IMDb now includes:

  • Over 12 million titles with more than 3 million added in 2022
  • Almost 13 million names with over 850,000 added in 2022
  • Over 170 million filmography credits with more than 18 million added in 2022
  • Almost 7.5 million user reviews with more than 750,000 added in 2022
  • Almost 3 million podcast episodes
  • Over 100,000 music videos

Additional statistics are available in the press room and are updated quarterly.

This year over 17,000 items were required to make it onto the Top 300 Contributors list. Across the year we averaged over one million approved updates per week with submissions of around two million items on some weeks. We know that speedy processing and publication times are most important to our contributors, and despite the volume increases, we have been able to reduce these times and reduce the sizes of (occasional) backlogs. Thank you everyone for your support.

Progress

... From a contributor perspective by Ramsey and Jay on The Contributor Team ...

What a year it has been. We must start by saying a huge thank you to our contributor community. You are the lifeblood of IMDb and we are forever grateful for your passion, knowledge and commitment to enriching the fan experience by providing vital and fascinating data, credits, ratings, reviews and everything in between.

The IMDb Contributor team has been hard at work to continuously improve and advance the contributor experience, to make contribution easier, smoother and more fun. We listen closely to your suggestions and try to implement as many ideas and recommendations as we can, so please keep your suggestions coming over at our Community pages.

Twelve months is a long time, but it flies by, so let’s take a look back at the key features, updates and improvements we have made for our contributors in 2022.

To make contributing easier, we introduced the ability to contribute “Release Type” data, so that new Release Date submissions are always accompanied with a method of release (e.g. theatrical, online etc.). This makes data more consistent and simplifies this process for new contributors. We also introduced a new mechanism for categorizing keywords into sub-genres, plot details and plot time-frames. This aids the standardization of data and improves the discoverability of title pages, helping to bring some much needed order for those of us that like to have our ducks in a row.

For the first time, contributors are now able to submit delete requests for incorrect or cancelled titles. Previously contributors would have to contact our customer service representatives via the help site to make such a request, which was a time consuming process. Now you can save time and help remove those pesky pieces of data that are no longer relevant.

Next, we introduced a feature which allows you to upload supporting evidence for credits and bio data submissions. In the past, contributors would have to upload evidence to 3rd party sites, but now you can upload to IMDb instead - straight to the source, making it easier than ever. This evidence helps our team to verify that submissions are factual and improves a contributor’s chance of having their submissions approved. Now that’s what we call a win-win!

We also made some big improvements to our Contributor Leaderboard page. We understand that the leaderboard is a great place to see your name up in lights and get the recognition you deserve for your hard work all year round. So, we rolled out a new page for our leaderboards, celebrating the most prolific submitters. The new page allows users to click on profiles and see past rankings, as well as highlighting changes in standings from the previous month. We have more exciting updates planned for the leaderboard, so keep your eyes peeled for what comes next in 2023.

In 2022, demand for authoritative data continued to accelerate across the Media & Entertainment industry. From creating compelling content, discovering new talent, or building new content recommendation features to attract and engage audiences, the need for accurate data to power decision making and content discovery has never been greater. We’re proud (as you should be, too) that IMDb’s data is leveraged by an ever-growing number of major studios, TV networks, global streaming operators, research & analytics services and many more via IMDb’s commercial content licensing business. This year, we’re particularly pleased to welcome Samsung TV Plus, and to help their customers discover new content to watch. On the market research side, we’re also delighted to welcome Kantar to the fold, and to help their analyst teams manage movie/TV data for entertainment-related research, analysis and reporting.

Finally, don’t forget to check out the IMDb Rewind. We put this together to celebrate the incredible efforts of you, our contributor community, and wanted to bring to life some of our favourite data types to surprise and impress. The Rewind really highlights how much effort our contributor community makes and in the year that IMDb turned 32 years old, it reiterates that we wouldn’t be here without you. Thank you!

... From a customer perspective by Col Needham ...

Continuing our international theme this year, if you would like to switch languages on the IMDb site, please use the menu in the upper right corner of any page (selection defaults to “EN” for English). This localisation works on any of the modern pages built on our new technology — more pages will be converted over time. These nine country/language pairs (and more) are already supported in our mobile apps. Some IMDb content also powers the voice experience for entertainment questions on Amazon’s Alexa devices in many more languages. As someone trying to learn French myself, it has been fun to interact with Alexa in French and hear the device recite information in French that I originally contributed in English. We continued to improve search results in local languages as part of this work, with more to come. In October we also launched our first social media handles in India on Instagram and Twitter. We replaced our US-centric Now Playing section with an expansion of the worldwide release calendar covering every country for which we have release dates; similarly, the home page Coming Soon feature is now localised. If release dates are missing for your country, do feel free to contribute them.

Our category expansion team worked on growing the podcast and music video title types, with some of the results shown in the numbers section above. We are weaving these new types further into the IMDb experience, including the addition of “Listen” links onto podcast title pages. We increased the supported professions on IMDb to include Music Artist and Podcaster as you can see, for example, with Taylor Swift and Julia Galef. I have enjoyed updating episodes and connections on one of my favourite podcasts, You Must Remember This (2014) as I caught-up with 17 seasons across the year after its host, Karina Longworth, appeared on our podcast, IMDb Is Obsessed (2021) in April. We expanded our coverage of podcast and music awards too with The Ambies and The Grammy Awards being good examples.

We remain committed to helping improve diversity, equity and inclusion across the entertainment industry. We took two further significant steps in 2022 in support of this important work. In August we launched a new free subscription tier for IMDbPro allowing anyone with an IMDb name page to claim their page and to optionally supply personal details / demographic data, and to update their IMDbPro performer profile outside of their credits. This helps all professionals better showcase themselves and their careers to industry decision-makers without requiring a paid subscription. In December we launched the next phase whereby anyone with a claimed name page can control the display of this information on IMDbPro and on all other IMDb interfaces, along with control over the display of their birth year, birth name and alternate names. For on-camera talent, age-playing ranges are now supported more widely. We believe that this is a positive step forward for representation and it should lead to IMDb having a larger range of content, thanks to the new fields available and thanks to the direct relationships with the larger number of professionals who have claimed their pages. Our press release contains more information on these steps to support more equitable hiring in the entertainment industry and it lists the organisations with whom we worked.

All of the above inspired us onwards in terms of the rollout of our new technology and design which had previously launched on the home, title, what to watch, photo and video pages. We want to be able to better support more languages, more device sizes, more title types, more data fields, and improved accessibility / consistency across the whole of IMDb. In November we launched our new name pages to support these aims immediately and to allow faster changes along with download speed improvements in the future. We are already seeing additional benefits in terms of customer engagement and traffic to the site as well as a reduction in mental switching costs between accessing IMDb on the web vs. mobile since the majority of customers access IMDb across more than one device. More details are available in the launch FAQ. The main search results were also migrated to the new technology platform for similar advantages.

In May we brought IMDb to a wider range of customers via the launch of our What to Watch app for Fire TV devices in the US. The app has a series of simple, fun games which you can play alone or as a group to help you find something great to watch. We later added speedy access to your IMDb watchlist via the app which is a great way to locate these titles on your Fire TV for convenient viewing. You can also save your preferred services for a personalised streaming guide.

Video plays an important role in the IMDb experience and we released an updated video player on the site and apps. This in turn has enabled more support of closed captions for IMDb original videos on the site, which improves accessibility and, continuing a theme, provides better access for customers whose first language is not English (app support and wider video coverage are coming soon). The “sticky” video feature means that if you click to play the audio of a video at the top of a title page and scroll, the video will stay within view as you read the rest of the page — perfect for multi-tasking (and coming soon to name pages). We also improved our playlist selection so there is something relevant to watch once the current video finishes.

We have continued to produce our own video content in the form of interviews, short shows and coverage of popular awards and events. We returned to San Diego Comic-Con, expanded our video coverage at Disney’s D23 event, and continued our coverage of The Academy Awards, Emmys, and New York Comic Con. Our new weekly round-up, 5 Things to Watch is proving popular.

In addition to short videos such as trailers and interviews, IMDb also links to other locations where full movies and shows can be watched (as well as where podcasts can be heard) in a growing number of countries and supporting a growing number of providers. We transitioned the IMDb TV brand to Amazon Freevee back in April and then added Freevee support in the US, UK and Germany to the Watch option on our title pages. In the US, new watch providers included AMC+ and Peacock.

We continue to invest in original photography, leading to a number of exclusive portrait studios at The Film Independent Spirit Awards, D23, Outfest LA Film Festival, and The Critics Choice Association 5th Annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television.

For improvements in our mobile apps, as usual please see the release notes for our mobile apps in the iOS and Android stores. My personal favourite this year is the addition of plot keywords to both apps.

Beyond the changes already highlighted, we made further improvements to IMDbPro and Box Office Mojo for our entertainment industry professional customers. On IMDbPro launches included updated company pages, an updated summary for name pages, and the Discover people and title searches. We were pleased to be able to support industry events and organisations throughout 2022, including: The American Black Film Festival; The Critics Choice Association Celebrations (Asian Pacific Cinema & Television, Latino Cinema & Television and Black Cinema & Television); Easterseals (Disability Film Challenge and Media Access Awards); Film Independent (Independent Spirit Awards); Outfest (Outfest Fusion, Outfronts, Outfest LA and Outfest Legacy Awards); The Sundance Film Festival; SXSW; The Toronto International Film Festival; Women in Film; and The Women in Film & TV UK Awards. We again provided data to ReFrame as the basis for their ReFrame Stamp initiative to highlight gender-balanced TV and film productions.

We expanded our Best Of section with even more lists of popular people and titles worldwide and some additional India lists inline with our international theme. Our Top Breakout Star was Emma D’Arcy who is pictured here receiving their Breakout STARmeter award. Other STARmeter awards across 2022 were: Lauren Ridloff in celebration of Black History Month; Salma Hayek Pinault (Icon Award) in celebration of Women’s History Month and IMDbPro’s 20th anniversary; Simu Liu in celebration of Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month; Simone Ashley (Breakout Award); and Melissa Barrera in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

You can also follow us on our various social media channels: TikTok; Facebook; Instagram; Twitch; Twitter; and YouTube. Thanks as always to our poll community for creating such engaging content for IMDb customers.

The Future

In addition to IMDb’s 32nd birthday, 2022 marked IMDbPro’s 20th birthday given we originally launched IMDbPro at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. I have fond memories of the launch itself — I am grateful for how far we have come and yet I remain excited about how much further we have to go at both IMDb and IMDbPro. The steps we have taken this year are a good start in the next phase of our journey and our mission to encourage more equitable hiring across the entertainment industry.

Finally talking of fond memories, if you would like to hear more of the IMDb story, I appeared on the BBC Radio 4 show, The Bottom Line with Evan Davis in November.

Feedback

Thank you for all of your support across 2022. As always, ideas and constructive feedback are welcome via Sprinklr, where you can also propose and vote upon new ideas, including those pertaining to the following topics: IMDb, data, iOS, Android and IMDbPro. This letter itself will be posted to Sprinklr if you have any feedback or questions.

New this year, if you have 100+ approved contributions, you can check your own position in the contributor rankings via the annual leaderboard hosted directly on IMDb. If you are inside the Top 300 contributors, as usual, we are offering you free access to IMDbPro for all of 2023 as a reflection of our appreciation. We will contact those people who qualify next week with access details.

We wish you a Happy New Year for 2023!

The final leaderboard was ready earlier than planned and is now live as announced above and you can check your total at the top of https://contribute.imdb.com/leaderboard/2022/

Thanks everyone who contributed.  I managed 35,149 items and came in at #161.

Simple math tells me that our "Top Contributor" is a bot. This translates to 17 "contributions" every minute of every hour of every day of 2022. Not humanly possible.

First time in the top 300 for me - #284. 19,080 items. It would be interesting to have a breakdown by type of item. I think crew credits would be the largest group for me, episodes of TV shows I watch. It is fascinating to see the same crew show up on different series or how they move to more senior positions over the years.

@owenrees

This has been one of the interesting things I've noticed since I started editing TV shows. The first episode of new seasons is always fraught with getting new positions for certain crew members.

And with the new year, this marks my retirement from contributing to IMDb.

The changes to the actor pages (particularly that most items seem to be filtered out by default) means that most of what I contribute is hidden away.

It seems rather pointless to contribute items (in my own time) that will rarely, if ever, be seen.

@EvanD71 Sorry to hear this and we are sorry to lose you if you go ahead with your decision ...

The new name pages are designed to improve access to IMDb's content and therefore improve access to everyone's contributions (so the opposite of your concerns).  As we wrote in the separate thread announcing the new design ...

The new name pages work across all device sizes; they are available in eight additional languages beyond English; they improve consistency with the rest of the site & our mobile apps; and they comply with the latest accessibility standards.  All this is to enable IMDb to better scale and grow our audience into the future. The full launch will enable a further enhancement in terms of even faster page loading speeds once we are able to activate client-side rendering.  We also have other enhancements in the pipeline which are now easier thanks to the new technology.

A reminder to read the FAQ at https://help.imdb.com/article/issues/GMWASETVPLJYXEZE/ and do take the time to explore the significantly more powerful options available to sort and filter credits. In particular, see the "All topics" menu in the upper right of the page and the blue filter symbol under the "Credits" heading. All of the old features / sorts / links / subpages are still available.

We are seeing increased engagement on the new pages with customers visiting & exploring more content than before, as well as improved search engine optimization so more people are visiting IMDb in the first place as well.

Hope this helps.

The FAQ mentions "By default, the Credits section is loaded with filters applied for jobs that the person is most known for."

As an example (as I binged his latest series "Romantic Getaway" yesterday afternoon), this actor/comedian https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4229189/?ref_=tt_rv_t12 has his 9 Producer, 18 Actor and 7 Writer shown, yet his 110 Self credits (which I would argue as a stand-up comedian would be what he is "best known for") is filtered away.

The filter also doesn't stick between actor pages. This is particularly annoying as a Contributor when you are trying to determine is Actor (I), Actor (II) or even Actor (XVIII) is the correct person (or if there is a merge needed). As a Contributor, the pages aren't fit for purpose.

You'll notice the episodes for  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20450344/reference/ are mostly incomplete. I'm sure someone else will get around to it.

@EvanD71 Thanks for providing the details …

yet his 110 Self credits (which I would argue as a stand-up comedian would be what he is "best known for") is filtered away.

There is no change in behaviour here though — the previous name pages only showed one section open on initial load and then you would have to scroll to either open further specific sections or scroll to click the “Show all” link as you can see from this archive.org copy from July at https://web.archive.org/web/20220705193707/https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4229189/

[we have always had to deprioritise the self section as the most famous people (at least actors and directors) tend to have more self credits on talk-shows than they have actual movie and TV-credits]

On the new pages you can quickly access a person’s full credits via the “All credits” link in the “All topics” menu in the upper right of the page.  In this case, https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4229189/fullcredits/

The filter also doesn't stick between actor pages.

We are looking at providing an option to make the filters sticky.

This is particularly annoying as a Contributor when you are trying to determine is Actor (I), Actor (II) or even Actor (XVIII) is the correct person (or if there is a merge needed). As a Contributor, the pages aren't fit for purpose.

The “All credits” view should cover this use case well.

Hope this helps

@Col_Needham Clicking a drop down arrow is easy. Especially when you know there is something there.

Having the filter at the top, means when you get to the bottom, you assume that is it.

It doesn't help that when there are multiple categories that don't fit on the one line available to the new filter, it gets hidden under an arrow, never to be seen (unless you click on the arrow before scrolling down).
This is particularly annoying for crew members with credits in many departments (it doesn't help when some of those categories have very long names).

That said, I am looking forward to seeing a new release movie and not having to explain to cinema staff why I'm taking photos of the credits!

@EvanD71  Thanks for the further details ...

In case this helps from the FAQ:

How do I easily see all credits at once?

By default, the Credits section is loaded with filters applied for jobs that the person is most known for. In order to see a person’s entire list of credits, de-select all of the applied filters. Filters can be de-selected by clicking the ones that are selected under the Credits section header. You can then open all the job sections by selecting Expand below.

Additionally, on the All Topics menu we added a link to the text view of credits which is now labeled All Credits for easier access.

I fell out of the top 25 this year, coming in at #28 down 6 spots from last year. I felt like I was actually contributing more but ended up with 14,000 less contributions.

@Col_Needham ,

Thanks. This would not be possible without the excellent work of the other poll admins over the years: the other poll administrators: Rafael, ElMo, Jen, Peter, Jessica, Drevnibor, Rubyfruit and Pencho.

I am continually amazed by the creativity of the poll authors.

I would also like to thank BonaFideBOSS for creating a more user friendly tool for reviewing IMDb Poll statistics (https://imdbstats.com/). He put together an excellent year-end summary for 2022.

Thanks!

I saw this yesterday and have the page already bookmarked filtered to the movies I need to see for the badge. 25 more movies to watch!

I've been working through the backlog of these badges. Most of the movies, I've seen before but was before I joined IMDb 20 years ago. It's a chance to re-watch some (mostly) classic movies. I just finished the 2004 and 2005 badges this week.

@bonitao All data contributions, including biographies, are already included in the published totals on the leaderboard.   We do not break out categories separately, although we do list the all-time Top 20 bio writers at https://contribute.imdb.com/czone/hall_of_fame#minibio

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year. Hopefully this will be another interesting year with a lot of contributions. I am at least excited to see if SkipEastport will challenge the #1 spot and if my interest for contributing will remain throughout the year. Extra congrats to SkipEastport for clutching the end of the year taking the #2 place for the year and going from #20 All Time (2021) to #4 All Time (2022).

Unrelated, but the total contributions for 2022 reached ~50,037,902, big thumbs up to everyone who contributed.

@Nomissimon10 You’re very kind to mention me. I’m in awe of YOU. Talk about accomplishments. You went from #63 All-Time to 2nd in just one year. The ingenuity and output of you, inespape-1, and cinelamour is amazing; it does inspire me to compete with myself for my own personal best. Don’t believe I could challenge you for a full year, but our occasional monthly flip-flops between 1st and 2nd place do add a bit of suspense to the proceedings, and with the meteoric rise of tatjana1984, 2023 should be an interesting year. Either way I don’t mind being Sundance to your Butch Cassidy 😂. Happy New Year, all.

Hey @Col_Needham, I have a question and an issue with being a contributor. Hopefully you have the time to have a look. To give some extra motivation to get through my paragraphs I have added some treats (statistics) for you in the end of my post.

Trouble with Pending Contributions

Would it be possible to add an auto-decline feature to titles that is still pending after X months? I currently have around 2,800 episodes (contributions) pending, some since 2021 or start of 2022. These have clearly fallen out of the loop or IMDb system somehow and should either be processed or just declined and resubmitted.

Contribution Counting

I also have a question related to what counts as a contribution (simply because I can't get the numbers to match). I track EVERY SINGLE contribution I make until it has been declined or accepted, thus I keep a 100% accurate count of how many episodes, podcasts, titles etc. I add to IMDb every month. I have long believed that one episode contribution (without an episode number) counted as 2 contributions as you add the title and release date. This however does not match my count vs the official ranking count. I also assume the same for contributing new podcasts and have picked a number based on the average fields filled (7-9) per new podcast. If these numbers are to be followed for the month of

September 2022:

- 380 new podcasts

- 124,971 episodes added

Would total to: 380 * 8 + 124,971 * 2 = 252,982

However, the number that is posted by IMDb is much higher, siting at 385,108.

This discrepancy exists for all of my tracked months. (Since around February 2022)

So my question is then, how are the contributions counted?

Disclaimer: I do not work for IMDb, and all the following data is either gathered from public sources on IMDb or generated by myself unrelated to IMDb.

More Stats (because they are fun)

- I contributed to IMDb on 262 / 365 days this year

- Average unprocessed: 103,582

- Average outside SLA: 74,258 (71.7%)

Unprocessed by Priority (avg):

- Platinum: 84,593 (81.67%)

- Gold: 2,075 (2%)

- Silver: 16,914 (16.3%)

Treats for Needham

You probably don't need me telling you this, but you spend a ton of time watching movies and really have something to show for your claim to love movies. Your movie-watching adds up to a total of 24,441 hours! (Not including rewatches) You have made a whopping 14,567 ratings since the beginning. Your most watched genre is definitely Drama, adding up to 57.8% of all your rated titles. Even though you are watching a lot of movies you manage to stay away from only watching mainstream movies, out of your titles rated most will be considered not mainstream. For 2022 85.6% of your rated titles is not mainstream. With your highest year for division of mainstream was in 2012 where 50.2% of your titles rated were mainstream.

Moving onto a quick comparison to other users of the site (IMDb) your ratings are slightly above average ratings for the rated titles. In 2022 111 of your ratings were above, 253 similar and only 10 titles with a lower rating. Your average rating is 6.85 / 10.0.

This is my Segway into giving informing you about your favorite year to make ratings throughout the IMDb history, 2021 was definitely the year you made the most amount of ratings, clocking in at 932 ratings. That is 2.55 ratings a day! 2022 was definitely not bad either, with 766 ratings making for an average of 2.1 ratings a day. (This is half the amount of contributions I am able to put out every second) June has been your favorite month to rate titles, accounting for 9.4% of your total ratings.

Most of your ratings were made in 1970 (in reality not, due to the IMDb error with tracking rating dates from before 1998 (educated guess). This means that the actual data will show 1970 and January is your favorite time to make ratings, but we can look away from this data due to the untracked rating timestamps.

Moving onto the last treat, your badges. You have unlocked a lot of badges within the different categories. Below you can find the amount of unlocked badges (per category) including sub-badges.

Miscellaneous (2 / 6)

Contributor (96 / 240)

Polls (5 / 8)

Top Contributor (10 / 30)

Oscar Highlights (18 / 18)

Top 250 (21 / 26)

Adding up to a total of 152 / 328 (46,3%) badges. (Accounting for every sublevel)

I hope you liked my quick summary of data you might not know about your own IMDb account. Hopefully you learned something new and found it interesting.

Your favorite genre is definitely Drama, adding up to 57.8% of all your rated titles.

Instead of "favorite," I think what you mean there is the most frequently watched genre.

For 2022 85.6% of your rated titles is not mainstream.

How do you define mainstream?

@keyword_expert You are correct about the favorite part, I corrected it. Mainstream is defined by a certain threshold of votes for the title. (50k, I am just experimenting putting interesting data together)

Trouble with Pending Contrubutions

Sorry about those; they are caused by system overloads due to the large number of pending items at the time. We have since strengthened our systems to protect against this.  I will ask if we can do a one-off pass through the ones left in your history.

Contributor Counting

This is all related to how the elements of a contribution on the front-end map to discrete fields in our systems on the back-end; some things are stay grouped together and others are split apart, this is especially true around new title submissions.  I will ask the team for some clarifications here.

Treats for Needham

Thanks for those.  Some things I knew, some things were new :-)

We only stored dates of ratings from the very late 1990s onwards so that explains all of those default 1970 dates. I have been voting for everything I watch since the ratings poll launched in May 1989 (and I did a catch-up voting run from when my electronic film diaries began in 1980/1 through to 1989 at that time).

I do have private IMDb lists with each year's viewings stored. My best year was 2000 with 985 full-length movie viewings. I managed 790 in 2022, down from 943 in 2021 as life started to return to normal with travel and events which eat into viewing time. I also do not rate TV-series and I watch more shows these days.  Your counts from my ratings only give you some visibility, as for example, each time I rewatch anything I last watched in, say, Y2000 and I re-vote for it, that title moves out of that year in my history.

For 2022 the 790 movie viewings translate to 763 unique titles as I had a total of 27 re-watches within the year itself (for example, I saw Glass Onion three times in 2022). Of the 763 titles, 367 have an IMDb year-in-title of 2022; 93 have an IMDb year-in-title of 2021. Of the 763 titles, 735 were first-time viewings in 2022 (I re-watch less these days as I am on a mission to reach 15,000 unique titles and re-watches do not help by definition). The oldest title I watched for the first time in 2022 was Grandma's Boy (1922) in honour of its 100th anniversary; I re-watched Nosferatu (1922) for similar reasons which is slightly older though. The newest title I watched was A Man Called Otto (2022) which premiered on 25 December 2022. Thanks for inspiring me to gather some of the above data.

Following on from my reply above, the reason for the discrepancy in your case is that if you provide the text title for the episode then that counts as an additional item.

Trouble with Pending Contributions

Thanks a lot, removing those in the backlog would save my program checking accept/decline a lot of time as they no longer will be checked 2x a day.

Contributing Counting

Thanks for checking out the contributions for me. So does this mean that each episode contribution counts as 3?

Episode Contribution Form

I also have a question related to how the form works and what matters when using it using only HTTP requests. (As when I use it I get ctrf tokens and api form tokens that should not be possible) Should I address the support or is this something they won't be able to assist me in anyways?

Statistics

Glad to hear that you were inspired! A Man Called Otto (2022) (Your newest rating) is inspired by the same story as A Man Called Ove, I recommend this move a lot more than the Tom Hanks ripoff. A Man Called Ove is a great movie if you haven't already seen it.

It would be cool if IMDb had a page made up for these statistics with more graphs for your profile, best would be an all year-round page. But a yearly summary would also be nice. When I can generate the information I displayed with some work it should be more than possible to do in a shorter and more correct way. Examples below. (In addition to these adding distribution of country of origin would also be cool, this is not something I could make with the data)

Yes, that is correct, plus then additional points for the attached credits and other data.

I also have a question related to how the form works and what matters when using it using only HTTP requests. (As when I use it I get ctrf tokens and api form tokens that should not be possible) Should I address the support or is this something they won't be able to assist me in anyways?

This is something to ask support about separately, thanks.

A Man Called Ove is a great movie if you haven't already seen it.

I have, thanks :-)

It would be cool if IMDb had a page made up for these statistics with more graphs for your profile,

We do already have the years and genres graphs via the "See more" link in the "Ratings Analysis" box, in my case on https://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/

The user activity pages and many of the features included there, such as lists, are still running on the old IMDb technology, so we will be able to look at new features once all of the migrations to the new platform are complete.  This is why these features have fallen behind-the-times in recent years.

@Col_Needham I know about the current graphs, thanks for informing me about the migrations. Hopefully you draw some inspirations from my example graphs.

Where can I access the details related to the ticket? (Or is the ticket number purely for addressing it in another ticket or thread)

And would it be possible to (if it does not already exist and I missed it) add a preferences when it comes to contribution mails/updates? I get tens of thousands of mails every day from my contribution and currently have 434k mails in my Trashcan.

@Nomissimon10 what isthe link of this site?

193 Messages

 •

2.7K Points

@bonitao I would link it if I could, but IMDb has told me I am not allowed to share due to some unspecified reason they won't specify. (Took them 6 months to come up with this response) Otherwise I would share the site with more of the tools I have created.

My intention was for people to be able to go to the site and be able to search on their profile and receive the same information after ~1 min of waiting. (Blocking this is to a certain degree makes sense due to scraping which is against TOS, but it sucks to not be able to share things that gives extra information that is fun/entertaining and provides an extra layer to the IMDb experience, I am just hoping IMDb will implement a few of the examples I put together)

And for me to be able to crowdsource help as well to even better quality and verification of the titles I add with the ability to downvote and upvote the upload of certain titles making sure the quality of the uploads are of higher standards opposed to what I am doing right now where I do it all alone.

@Nomissimon10  We have completed the backfill on past statuses when the system was overloaded (and fixed the root cause of the overload).  Sorry for the delay. The best we could do was to set these contributions to a new "Unknown" status, which is at least better than "Pending" as all have been processed ("Accepted" or "Declined").

@Col_Needham I have to note that one thing I absolutely DESPISE about the revised formatting is that when searching for a person with a common name (i.e. more than one person, and often dozens), the search results no longer display the Roman numerals following the name. This makes for a much more difficult slog through the possibilities, as sometimes names are shown with no job or credit attached, and others appear with a credit which is perhaps not most representative of their work, making identification a problem. It also makes merging multiple pages for the same person more of an ordeal. I used to be able to go through names in groups (e.g. #s 1-25, or 101-110); no longer possible. It was also possible to look for the highest number and get a sense of how many people I had to go through on a name such as Chris Smith; I have no way of knowing that now, as all I can do is keep clicking on "more popular matches", with no way of knowing how many are left. (And of course, once I click on a name, going back returns me to the top of the list. Ugh.)

@scgary66 Thanks for the feedback.  The team responsible for the search update are monitoring this thread -> https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/issues-with-the-updated-find-search-results-display/6395814ab830ce436bbd3302 where the same issue has been raised.

@Col_Needham Glad to know this issue is under consideration. Another annoyance is that acting credits are now displayed by default in chronological order, regardless of whether they were movies, TV, etc. I know there's the option to sort by project type if I click on the blue icon - but I have to do it EVERY TIME. Is there any option for users to set it that way by default?

@VonPunk / @tatjana1984

Yes, that's an unspoken perk for good contributors

It’s not exactly unspoken … from the end of the annual letter itself, as posted above and as sent by email to all contributors: “If you are inside the Top 300 contributors, as usual, we are offering you free access to IMDbPro for all of 2023 as a reflection of our appreciation. We will contact those people who qualify next week with access details.”

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham Oh good addition, is this the first year it was mentioned.

I still recall first time I got one and thought it was an unauthorised free trial that I cancelled again and again but it kept coming back, only when complaining to IMDb staff outta fear I was going to be charged into debt was I informed it was a reward. So glad it's on the letter now. I should learn to read.

Hi, Gary. I understand your frustration and agree. Thank you very much for sharing your displeasure. For what it is worth, you might find some small bit of satisfaction by going through the trouble of signing into IMDb, loading up the submission interface (for an IMDb title page) and then typing in a name into a new cast/crew item: e.g. https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/edit?update=tt0000001:cast.add.1 (but take care not to actually submit anything). How does that sound, for the time being?

@jeorj_euler Well, I tried this with the aforementioned theoretical Chris Smith, and was offered 20 options - 14 with that exact name, and 6 with variations; the highest numbered of the 20 was Chris Smith (CCLXXVIII), which might seem like it's close to the end of the list, but it's not. The system offered me the option of creating Chris Smith (CCCXXXVI), so there seem to be 335 at the moment (or perhaps fewer, as some may have been merged). Getting to see 20 of them is a relatively small dent. (The suggestion system is obviously not prioritizing those Chris Smiths who were actors, or who may have been active on an 1894 title.)

Another weird glitch I've just noticed is that the same name sometimes comes up multiple times in the same list. I searched for Jim Campbell, and when I clicked on exact matches, James B. Campbell turned up three times in the first two pages of options. I can't believe you want that to happen.
