It's interesting that the situation was only depicted on the poster of Escape From New York, never in the movie itself, but become rather iconic and the moment in Cloverfield was an intentional homage to the poster.

This is also a subject in the Deus Ex games and the Judge Dredd comics (along with the 1995 film and 1997 game). I wonder where I'd be able to sang a screenshot of the outside of the statue as it is in the hokey adaptation directed by Danny Cannon; something not even so much as hinted at the better adaptation directed by Pete Travis.

Wow, what a timely poll in a metaphorical way. I don't know if that was intentional but, being an American, that's what I thought of immediately, unfortunately: the words at the base of the statue and what she symbolizes being betrayed in my country by some -- of by one, with some following. 'Very sad. Anyway, it's a very good poll and even more interesting to me because of the timing. 

I'm having a hard time choosing among the films, in terms of most iconic, but maybe 'Planet of the Apes' or "Escape from NewYork.' 

May I suggest four edits to the otherwise excellent intro? (They're below in bold.)

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, it was given to the United States by the people of France in 1886, to represent the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution. Since then, it has become an emblem of American hopes and dreams, a gateway sign for both New York City and America.

Over the years, we've seen Lady Liberty getting destroyed and damaged in many movies. To you, what was the most iconic fall of her?
