need character search

Character search is needed in the following ways:
1) Within Name search, so we get all the Actors who performed the character
2) Within Advanced Title Search, so we get all the Titles that include the character
3) Within Filmography, Refine by Character.

I think it should be possible to search by character name. What are your thoughts?

Hi Mark D'Arcy,

This is already possible, but is limited to characters with character pages.

1. From the drop down menu next to the search box select Characters. You should see the following:

2. Enter a character name in the box labeled "Find Movies, TV shows, Celebrities and more...", then click the yellow spyglass. For this example I've used the character name Batman. You should see this link:
http://www.imdb.com/find?ref_=nv_sr_fn&q=Batman&s=ch

Hi Dan

Firstly thanks for your response. I was able to access the character search on mobile device (desktop version). Is there any plan to enable advanced searches on mobile apps?

Hi Mark,

Someone from IMDb's programming development staff will have to answer that question. I am simply a long time user of IMDb and not a staff member.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the IMDb mobile apps. We'll change this thread to an "Idea" where it can be reviewed by other IMDb users and staff for future consideration.

Please know that we are constantly making updates to our sites and apps, and welcome all feedback from users when considering these changes.

Thanks!

I used to search by character name, but I no longer see the option available.  I think it's a good option to have, for example if you want to see who's played a particular historical figure over the years.  Or even a major fictional character.

It used to be that we could search the message boards but an upgrade in 2002 screwed that up. They promised that feature would come back soon - it never did and the boards are now gone also.

I miss the character search feature, it was good for checking out all of the actors who have played Sherlock Holmes or how many actresses have played Marilyn Monroe. As the years go on, IMDb keeps taking away features. OK, message boards aren't necessary but the "dB" in "IMdB" refers to data base so why chip away at the usefulness of that feature?

Dear IMDb website-masters,
what's your difinition of "soon" ?  Three monhts have past and some features like "character search" are still not restored.
Not that I want to complain, but just to let you know that I'm still longing to see it back. And it appears I'm not the only one. :-)

Another feature I would like to see in the mobile device= when you've found a particular movie, that you can see if that movie is listed or not in my (private) lists.

Thanks & cheers, Ton

Hi, I research U.S. names and naming trends. IMDB used to provide a character name search, which was very useful for this. For example, the name Tenley suddenly appeared out of the blue on baby name lists at the beginning of the 2000s. Many times when baby names get popular out of the blue, it's due to a character in a movie/tv show. A character search would have revealed that the name was used in the 2001 film "Summer Catch." Currently, you can search for popular characters, like "Spiderman" or "Walter White" and you will eventually get results, but for more vague names like Tenley, the searches are not useful. Previous incarnations of IMDb had this feature! Please bring it back for the sake of name enthusiasts!

Hi Scooter Burch,

IMDb reformulated character pages. For more details please see:
Updates to Characters

As such character searches are not currently available. Until such time as IMDb restores this functionality, you can do a keyword search of IMDb via Google. This is the general format:
site:imdb.com {KeyWord}
Where {KeyWord} is your search term.

For instance if the {KeyWord} is Tenley, enter this in the Google search window:
site:imdb.com Tenley

This is the link for that search:
https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aimdb.com+Tenley&oq=site%3Aimdb.com+Tenley

Many users and I hope the IMDb restores the character search in the near future.

So... over 8 months since this feature was removed and it has still not made a comeback! The layman's understanding of 'database' is a CROSS-REFERENCED set of related data, searchable by many useful fields.
In IMDB, the most useful fields are title, year, actor and character, (among a few others, of course.)

Without the ability to  search this field, how will the average Joe find out which James Bond film starred 'that bloke who only did the one movie?' Or which Sherlock Holmes film starred the actor who played Doctor Who a couple of times...? Or, what's that film with Wade Wilson in it that ISN'T a Deadpool movie?

People need to know these things. That's why the database was invented.
Under its current stewardship, they should consider renaming it IML - The Internet Movie... List.

Please pass these messages on. You must have access to SOMEBODY, even if only an assistant to the deputy forum liaison, IMDb Antarctic Office...

For what it's worth, I'm in favor.  I think it's nice to be able to see who's played the same character over the years in various movies, and a search by title or author won't necessarily turn them all up-- especially for historical figures.

Why has the character search function not been reinstated?  Also, in the FAQs it still says "If you're looking for a character or company, you can select these in the right hand drop down at the end of the search bar or click "See all results" to navigate to the search results page.”  But there is no drop down menu on the right hand side of the search bar anymore, and “See all results” does not give you character names.  I just looked up “Fanny Brice” and neither “Funny Girl” nor “Funny Lady” showed up in the search, even though Fanny Brice is the main character in both of those movies.

Character search is a big missing feature. I'm looking for a tv series that dramatized the story of Richard Jewell. When I search for him, I get a lot for the actual Richard Jewell, and for the film about him, but nothing about TV series. Name search is useless for this task. It brings up lots of similar names, all of which are wrong. So I click on Exact name match, and it only brings up real people. All I need is a button on the "Exact name match" page that lets me search for characters. He shouldn't be hard to find. IMDB has all the data it needs to look this up, but there's no way to do it.

Limiting it to characters within the character pages makes it useless if I can't find the show.

@Col_Needham 5 years later (2022) and imdb still haven't "re-added" the character search back! This is absolutely ridiculous. It was a great and highly integral feature for search purposes before the changes so why hasn't imdb been working on it all this time to bring it back? And now instead you're making another nonsensical and awful wholesale page layout re-design in Aug 2022.

Why did IMDb do away with the “Character Name” search function? (This dates me – it probably disappeared from your website ten years ago.) Say, for instance, you wanted to find everyone on IMDb who played the character named “Batman” – it was an available search function and it would pull up all the characters listed by that name. Or another example, my own name is Richard Feinberg. I could search IMDb’s listings to find all the characters in TV or movies named Feinberg (not just the actors, an option which is still available, but the CHARACTER names. I might discover an obscure character in an old TV drama with my exact name, or the name of my brother, sister, or other relatives (and maybe even be able to seek out that show or movie). It was really cool! It doesn’t seem like it would be that hard to have that search algorithm made available again. So, if you know, can you tell me if it can be brought back?

Richard: See the discussion at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/updates-to-characters/5f4a7b258815453dbacbd7f4 where it is explained that they were getting rid of the character name search function (in 2017).

While there were implications at the time that such a function might be brought back later, my understanding was that it would require a lot of work before that could be done. Quoting Col Needham in that thread:

The correct way to do this is with a proper data model tied to the underlying credit database, backed with a full search; available across all IMDb interfaces. Once this is built, you will be able to find all instances of a character name across titles without requiring another contributor to have done essentially duplicate work to manually add each character credit to a separate character page.

And as far as I know, IMDb has not made it a major priority since then to bring the character name search function back.

How can I search for the name of a character to find out what show or movie the character was in and what actor played the character? (example:  I searched for the character Allison Mackenzie, but the results were all actresses and other actual people.  I finally remembered that she was a character in Peyton Place played by Mia Farrow.)

Kace: Unfortunately, I don't think this is currently possible on IMDb. See the announcement at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/changes-to-imdb-characters which indicates that the character search function was shut down in December 2017.

The plan was for character search to eventually be brought back, but I have no idea when that will actually happen.

Right now, your best bet may be to do a Google search using the character name and imdb. In some cases, your results may be dominated by actual people with that name, but it's also possible that you may find the title with the character somewhere in the results list.

Hi Kace,

As gromit82 points out above, it is no longer possible to do a character search within IMDb. However, you can do an equivalent search using Google. In your case, use this for the search term in Google:
site:imdb.com "Allison Mackenzie"

This produces this search results:
https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ACYBGNS0zQe4ZT_lx_-SxYPDM0rDeelfPg%3A1579742087527&source=hp...

Results include:
Peyton Place (1957) - Diane Varsi as Allison MacKenzie - IMDb
Mia Farrow as Allison Mackenzie, Allison MacKenzie - IMDb
Barbara Williams as Sister Allison MacKenzie - IMDb

= = =

This is the general form:
site:imdb.com {Search_Term},
where {Search_Term} is your specific search term such as "Allison Mackenzie"

= = =

In anticipation of IMDb deprecating character pages, I produced this list of the first 1000 characters on IMDb:
Links to Internet Archive of Character Pages

Character Code / Link to Archived Page / Character Name

Since CHARACTERS are no longer listed as searchable objects, how can we find the episode(s) of a show the characters was in as a guest? He's not listed in the "Full Cast" listing (it seems truncated).

Specifically, I was looking for Batman's appearance in "The Adventures of Superman" and there was no way to do a character search.

I really miss this feature.  The search just lists individual results you may have to go to page 14 of the responses to get a character.   e.g. site:imdb.com "zeus"  - you won't get a single response that covers each movie with zeus.   I used to use this for a lot of angels, gods, superheroes, even bond.   I hope they put the feature back in soon.

There used to be a feature where one could find characters (usually ones that appeared n more than one film) along with who played them in which films.

It was VERY handy for playing film related games as well as for serious research.

Wondering why this great feature was eliminated and IF it will ever come back  !

Today we are modifying the display of Characters across IMDb.
 After in-depth discussion and examination,
we have decided to simplify the display of Characters on IMDb,
focusing our on-going efforts towards title specific character details.
While in concept, we love the idea of character data spanning across all titles,
in practice we do not feel our past experience lived up to expectations.
The majority of our previous character pages were dead ends...

The problem with this idea is that it will not separate the character by continuity. Spider-Man has been played by many actors and has appeared in many titles, but they are not all the same character. Toby Maguire's Spider-Man is not Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Into the Spider Verse has many actors who voiced many Spider-Man characters, but they are not the same Spider-Man either.

I would not want the characters from the last two awful Dukes of Hazzard films in any list for the characters from the original Dukes of Hazzard. I don't want to see the characters from the awful 21 Jump Street films listed with the characters from the 21 Jump Street television series either.

I want character pages back so that continuities can be maintained for each character who appeared in two or more separate movies or series. Also, sometimes a full character name isn't used in the credits of a movie or series for a character from another movie or series. For example, the character Cheyenne Bodie from Cheyenne is credited as only Cheyenne in The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw. So searching for this specific character would require several searches to find all of the works where he appeared.

Since IMDb deprecated character pages, there has been a need to be able to search for characters across titles. Ideally, it would be very helpful for IMDb to implement a character search with capabilities similar to the one that bderoes describes in her original post in this thread. As an interim partial solution, one can use this search text within Google:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* {character}

Where:

{character} is a specific character.

For example:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* superman

produces character pages related to superman.

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site%3Aimdb.com%2Ftitle%2F*%2Fcharacters%2F*+superman

This is another Google search that may be helpful: site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/{NameID} {character}

Where:

{NameID} is the name ID for a specific actor.

{character} is a specific character.

nm0001660 is the name ID for George Reeves

For instance, this search returns the character pages for titles in which George Reeves plays Superman:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/nm0001660 superman

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/nm0001660%20superman

This is another Google search that may be helpful: site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* {character} {ActorName}

Where:

{character} is a specific character.

{ActorName} is the name of an actor / actress

For instance, this Google search returns character pages for George Reeves playing superman.

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* superman "George Reeves"

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/*%20superman%20%22George%20Reeves%22

Dan,

Thank you for sharing the use of * in google search!

I don't know why you would google search for character pages WITHIN an actor's filmography. If you just use the Show All feature on their Name Page, and display all episodes (if you restrict that in your settings), you can find all the instances with a browser search. Not every filmography credit gets a Character page, after all.

For George Reeves, I find 172 instances of Superman on his page, while the google search

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/nm0001660%20superman

finds 68.

Similarly, for this search, where you look for character pages using the actor's name and the character name

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/*%20superman%20%22George%20Reeves%22

  1. you'll miss a lot because a character page is not present for each occurence,
  2. you'll get a lot of extra stuff where google finds one or the other

You get fewer results if you join them with a plus:  superman+"george reeves", but still get junk like this page:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044231/characters/nm0489001

To get around the spotty occurence of character pages on IMDb, I would suggest using the fullcredits page instead.

So search for

superman site:imdb.com/title/*/fullcredits

But the 3040 results will not really be available to you. Even skipping ahead using the page number links at the bottom of the results page, I get to page 26, still seeing 3040 as the number of results, but on page 27 it's down to 267.

This NOT an anomaly. I recently tried using google to scrape certain information from IMDb, and got miserable results. Even though google said it found 4500+ results, it would only show me <300. And when it asked if I wanted to see more, it would never get beyond the 300 (or less) limit.

Google is built for finding a few things relevant to your search, not for data mining.

If my original post were implemented, we could really use the database as such.

This discussion appears fairly pointless. It has been several years since the handy character pages have been removed. Let's just face it, IMDb wants to make money and so removed everything it deemed as cruft. We will just have to keep track of who is which Superman in the various Superman franchises on our own without this, now kneecapped, database. I would suggest going over to Fandom and starting a character database there. We will never get one back here or even a way to make a faux character listing.

I've been watching this thread and others like it going nowhere for way too long. It is pointless.

(Just noticed my own vote for this has been lost in the conversion from GS to sprinklr.)

I suspect that Dan used Superman as an example, and was not actually seeking all the Superman titles.

I'd be surprised if Fandom didn't already have a Superman listing. I've certainly used them for other character lists. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't continue to request it on IMDb.

I was continuing the use of Superman as an example, though my favorite character example is John Munch who started on Homicide: Life on the Street then appeared on The X-Files then transferred to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and also appeared in The Beat, Arrested Development, and The Wire.

We have no way to track that now, and probably will never have it again.

I think IMDb could provide it easily, if they just put forth the effort.

Results might not be perfect, but a simple query on the Character field would at least get the user started.

That user might then be motivated to curate the data into something like this:

All The TV And Movie Universes That Are Unified By Detective Munch

(found with google of "john munch" site:imdb.com/list)

My character needs have been more detailed. Bugs Bunny comes to mind. (Hence my having used Fandom.)

Bugs Bunny - as voiced by Mel Blanc

Seems like Col_Needham implied a forthcoming replacement feature back when the prior pages were removed. (Link to Nov 2017 post):

The correct way to do this is with a proper data model tied to the underlying credit database, backed with a full search; available across all IMDb interfaces. Once this is built, you will be able to find all instances of a character name across titles without requiring another contributor to have done essentially duplicate work to manually add each character credit to a separate character page.

@lady_aleena To be honest, there is a ton of specified Fandom/Wikia projects.

And, in case of John Munch, character is so known he has his own Wikipedia page.

A few years ago, there was an option in the movie title advanced Search, that we can write the name of the movie characters and see the list of the movies in which the actor/actress has the same character's name and also when checking a movie title and click on the name of a character (which written opposite the name of an actor/actress), again we can see the list of the movies that have the same character's name on them

I have a question why has IMDB deleted this option?

Is it possible to activate it the same before?
