As I recall, it was optional to have PMs forwarded to one's email in the old PM system.
Perhaps it could be optional to have an IMDb inbox as well, so that if anyone started getting harassed, they could turn off the (not yet extant) PM feature.
Or perhaps, since we're already required to have a Facebook account to Like pages and make Comments, perhaps have an option to link our IMDb account to messaging on Facebook?
BTW, why are people making positive comments without VOTING Yes?
I have no idea why people are making positive comments without voting yes, but the fact that IMDB removed the option to send private messages to other IMDB users really ticked me off.
To vote: while on the GetSatisfaction page for this reply, look at the top of the screen. You should see 2 icons: a heart and something else. The heart is the "like/vote" button. Or, if you prefer, scroll back to the top of the page and see this: Both the count button and the Vote button are clickable. Only Vote logs a vote.
You are voting about the root of the thread. Since you, Jack Johnston, are the author of the thread, your Vote was the first one automatically recorded just from having posted the thread.
Anyone who posts a comment only gets added to the Followers of the thread, which is not the same as Voting yes. I've posted opposing opinions to some ideas.
It's also possible to Follow a thread without posting a comment, by using the Follow button below the Vote button.

YES Bring back the Private Message system !!!
IMDb Message Boards Announcement:
We have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017.
This includes the Private Message system
https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/new-features-updates/boards-closure-faq/G5HU888HZYE8LF79#
Does this change impact any other feature?
The private message feature is part of the boards system
so that has closed too.
Otherwise all other site features are unaffected.
Users can still create lists, post user reviews, vote on titles
and browse our content as usual.
