Advanced search by parents guide categories

This site/comunity has the biggest and most detailed database of movies on the internet. And in my long-lasting experience it is pretty helpful in finding new movies. But last few years I have a new kind of problem. I need to look up movies based on the parents guide. In that sense the official ratings were not enough to exclude the exact amount of violence or sex & nudity with the advanced search on its own. I needed to check every movie manually. And since I see movies with all kind of groups (kids, family, teenagers, religious groups etc.) it is very important not to show something disturbing, scandalous or unfitting.

My suggestion is that you enrich your advanced search with the new filters by parents guide categories, and the level of the category (none, mild, moderate, severe). With that kind of tool IMDB would be the first service that would have that kind of search options. And it would make IMDB search perfect for covering all possible search conditions.

Let me illustrate a bit. I would choose advanced search and then pick the wanted conditions (year, genre, etc.) and then I could also filter the search results by parents guide categories. For example, I could choose that in the category of violence “none” and “mild” are acceptable levels. Or in the category of sex& nudity the acceptable level is “none”.  And as result I would get only movies that meet those two parents guide conditions.

I know that parents guide has scores and commentaries from the users, but they are still more precise and exact than official parents guide ratings (G, PG,…).

I would love to be able to search for TV series with Frightening & Intense Scenes categories mild and moderate. Is that possible?

Hi Filip —

Thank you for the suggestion. This is not a feature IMDb offers today. I think it's a great idea!

I've marked this conversation as an "Idea", which lets IMDb staff and users read and comment on it.

Please let us know if we can offer any further help!

Would be nice if that were possible. I hope others will vote for it as well.

Hi Sarah,

I think this feature would greatly improve imdb. I should be possible to search to TV series with highest IMDb rank with Frightening & Intense Scenes category moderate.

Hello,

I couldn’t find it but can a criteria be added to the advanced search? Can we add the parental guidance rating to the event search? I.e. I’m trying to find a horror movie to watch with my daughter that is PG-13.

thanks,

justin benson

I meant to put “add the parental guidance rating to the advanced search”

Justin: If you are in the USA, it is already there. See the Advanced Title Search page at https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ where "US Certificates" (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17) is one of the search options. It's just below Instant Watch Options and above Color Info.

Hi. Parent's guide has "categories" (can't find better word in my brain) Sex&Nudity, Violence&Gore, Profanity etc. So search would be much better if we would be able to select level (e. g. none, low, mild, moderate, severe) of each category.

But first you should "repair" your search engine. In search I selected TV series, genre: action, keywords: f-word, profanity. But many action series with lots of profanity are not displayed in search result.

Hi! I've been using IMDB for a long time to check movie ratings and inappropriate scenes. The "Parents Guide" has been very helpful for me in this regard. However, lately, it's been difficult to find family-friendly movies to watch with my family. I believe adding a section to the "Advanced Search" page on IMDB to filter movies based on the ratings of content like inappropriate scenes would be quite beneficial. I've shared this idea with IMDB, and they suggested that I post it here to see how others would react. I think such a feature could be easily implemented and would be helpful. (Sorry for english)

This idea can be easily implemented for IMDB. Users just want regular access to data that already exists.

Dear IMDb Team,

I hope this message finds you well.I am writing to inquire whether IMDb provides a feature that allows users to search for films using the Parents' Guide as a filter. Specifically, I am interested in finding a way to locate movies that meet certain criteria related to content warnings and appropriateness for different age groups, as outlined in the Parents' Guide.

If such a feature exists, could you please provide me with instructions on how to use it?

If it does not currently exist, I would appreciate any suggestions or alternative methods you might recommend for finding films based on parental guidance criteria.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,
