Suggestion: Movies Discovered Thanks to the Poll Community (IMDb Poll Board)

These are movies and short films that the IMDb poll board members discovered thanks to the poll community, either when constructing their own polls, voting in polls by other authors, from comments or conversation with other poll board members. Which of these films is your favorite, or which one would you be most interested in watching?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4116135545/

Movies or short films you had never heard of before, that you discovered when you were creating one of your poll suggestions, or voting in other polls, or from other poll board members. So ONLY the poll community, not any of IMDb's other features, like in TSI's poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/dkqrvK4FnLs/

Max 3 picks per user.

The c e n s o r s on this website keep marking my posts as private because they do not like some of the words in the posts, but they are needed.

Please look for a 1976 movie with Faye Dunaway, Sam Wanamaker, and Lee Grant.  It is about a cruise ship that is carrying a group of people escaping from a bad situation and looking for freedom.  It is an incredible film.

@Jessica   Thank you.  I will try to think of a few more.  I don't remember who recommended that film to me as it was so many years ago!

I'd say Spartacus (1960) and Marty (1955).

Both thanks to J-man on the Movies With 4 Oscar Wins poll thread.

I love this suggestion.

FYC:

The movie that immediately came to mind is The Adventures of Prince Achmed, suggested by cocoken. It's been in several polls but it may have been because of this poll by Dibby. It's a breathtaking film.

 Palme (suggested by Peter), found in this poll by cocoken, which is wonderful source for recommended hidden-gem movies: https://www.imdb.com/poll/pUnn7lvVMY4/

Soni (as I was researching this poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/FLgZ0460GJI/)

and there were several as I researched this poll

so I just chose two:

For Sama and Prayers for the Stolen

I've learned of many others through polls, suggestions, or JFF threads but I can't remember which ones. The poll board has been a treasure trove.

@rubyfruit76

Thanks Sara. :)

I'm not including TV series or documentaries, so I added The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Soni and Prayers for the Stolen.

@Jessica ,

Like @rubyfruit76, I love this poll. This would have been perfect for this version of the poll's 13th anniversary. 😊😻

My problem, there are so many great films that I've learned about that I learned about here, I will have a hard time narrowing it down to only three. I also have a significant backlog.

I went to a movie theatre and watched Red when it came out.  I thoroughly enjoyed the film even though I am not normally a Bruce Willis fan.

I don't remember who told me about the film.

@Breumaster

Thanks. Three is the limit, so I added the first ones (let me know if you want to change).

@Breumaster   Funny you should mention Cat People.  I watched the remake just last week.  Completely different movie than the original, but still enjoyable in its own ways.

Then I'd better change 'Coppelia...' to 'Sunset Boulevard'.

Hard to say. I have found many movies researching. But I'm not sure I have seen many of them.

I have also watched movies in order to vote on a pending poll. But usually they are films I already knew existed so while the poll may have pushed me to watch it it didn't reveal it to me.

I guess I'll nominate Lagaan, I started watching some Indian cinema to vote on Bollywood polls and that one I liked a lot.

@Pencho15 and Dan and some of the older poll makers may remember this, but we used to have a discussion thread on this board titled:  "What was the last movie you saw and how would you rate it?"

We would list the most recent movie we had seen (in the theatres or on television or on video or dvd rental) and then give it a rating.  I got some good recommendations just reading what my fellow board members had recently seen.  I also got good advice sometimes on what to avoid.

I think that it was on that discussion thread that I learned about the two movies I have already listed here.

For example, this afternoon I watched Disclosure Day.  It reminded me a lot of Close Encounters of the Third Kind which is about fifty years old.  Surprise!!!  Same director.  Not a great film, but not as bad as some of the reviews that I read.  It was at least enjoyable and kept my interest, so I give it a solid 6/10.

We still have that thread:

To be true, I don't get what it has to do with that poll idea here.

@Breumaster The poll question is about movies that we discovered because of this poll board.  The discussion thread that I mentioned was one of the ways to introduce each other to movies by talking about what we had seen recently.

For example, many years ago someone mentioned that they had seen "Red" in the theatre and really enjoyed it.  I liked the points that they made and went to the theatre and saw it myself and it became an immediate favorite (even though I don't normally like Bruce Willis).
