@cinephile ,

Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsai_Ming-liang ) has his name as Tsai Ming-liang and IMDb ( https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0158857/ ) as Ming-liang Tsai. Your poll currently has it both ways. I'm not certain which form is preferred, although I suspect the filmmaker prefers Tsai Ming-liang.

At this point, I am not suggesting that you update your poll to have the name listed only one way. However, it could be jarring to someone taking the poll unfamiliar with his works.

@dan_dassow & @cinephile ,

Are these his votes from the Sight & Sound survey in 2012 or in 2022, or did he vote the same both times. I could only find his 2012 votes. I am not even sure he voted in 2022, but honestly don't know. The answer may effect the using the term recent in the introduction.

FYC,

Acclaimed Malaysian-Taiwanese filmmaker, Ming-liang Tsai, best known for his films, Ai qing wan sui (1994) and Bu san (2003), voted for his ten favorite films of all-time in the Sight and Sound's decennial director's poll. Which one of his selections is your favorite too?

He does not make a difference. His votes are identical from 2012 to 2022.

In 2022:

Tsai Ming-Liang might be better. At least, I have seen it more currently.

@cinephile

Probably best to write his name in the description as Tsai Ming-Liang so it matches the title.

Thanks, I thought that might be a possibility, I just couldn't verify it. I am not challenging that, but it did strike me as odd. As it doesn't seem like normal human behavior.

He saw more new movies that had come out over the past decade, he probably saw older movies for first time over the decade, and he is not the same person he was a decade earlier, so ones perspective's change. It is hard for me imagine his 11th, 12th or a new choice not rising in perspective value, while one or two of the existing ten moved down in his ranking over the interceding decade and the Top Ten list changed as a result.

It's funny that he chose one of his own movies for this type of list. The only two movies I've seen from the list are Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003) and 400 Blows (which I absolutely hated).  I liked Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003) but find it a stretch to consider it one of the greatest movies ever made. It gets my default vote.

Lol. It is because he chose one of his own films that I chose to create the poll. I would not have done it otherwise.
