It's a very well-known idiom that "behind every great man, there is a woman" in the sense that the success of some men who marked history or made a difference depended for a large part on the support of their wives.

Far from being approving puppets, the following women knew how to show support, help, love and disapproval when it was called for and to a certain degree became the only persons with enough guts to call their men out on their mistakes or misbehaviors.
