I don't think it would have mattered for several reasons:

- many Hispanic / Latino people have European background so it is a technicality that can be used from both sides of the debate

- she was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, ambassador of South American music and that even Brazilians don't know about her 'real' identity speaks volumes about her legacy

- I think  some notions shouldn't be  "essentialised"  like culture for instance, if one feels like belonging to one culture more than other, why excluding him/her?
