Poll Suggestion: Best Living Director Never to win The Academy Award for Best Director. Suggestions welcomed.

Stanley Kubrick died without ever winning one.

Martin Scorsese had to wait years to win one.

Which living director deserves to win an Academy Award for Best Director?

Suggestions welcomed.

A similar poll has been done, but maybe it would be OK if you include some other options.

@Jessica Champion won, so that poll is out of date.

Maybe add a condition that a director has a minimum number of films he/she/they have directed to qualify?

FYC:

Hayao Miyazaki
AS an aside, John Sayles hasn't directed anything since 2013. Just something to note.

@riverotter

Paul Thomas Anderson was in Chihir0's poll. Not sure if you intended to exclude all the directors from that poll, otherwise you might as well add some more.

Also FYC:

Martin McDonagh

Baz Luhrmann

Richard Linklater

Spike Jonze

@riverotter If you are excluding the directors from the first poll, it would be a good idea to link to it.

I would reccomend doing a Google search, it doesn't take long to find a number of articles on the topic and some notable ELITE names. I would think you could fill every answer slot, depending on your threshold for inclusion, especially if your adding international directors.

FYC: Tim Burton, David O. Russell, Guillermo Del Toro, Spike Lee,  Terrance Malik, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, George Lucas, David Lynch, David Fincher, Brian De Palma, Ken Burns, Peter Weir,  Wes Anderson, Michael Bay, Russo Bros., David Yates, J. J. Abrams, etc.(and that's just limited to white males)

@riverotter

Please make this into two sentences. From:

Martin Scorsese had to wait years to win one, which living director is most deserving of a Best Director Oscar?

Great suggestion. He has such a large and acclaimed body of work.

FYC:

Claire Denis

Kenneth Branagh

Andrey Zvyagintsev

Noah Baumbach

Yimou Zhang

Celine Sciamma

(I personally wouldn't include Sciamma, as she's only made five feature films so far but McDonagh has only made four features so far. They're both among my favorite filmmakers, McDonagh is my favorite living playwright, and their work has been so acclaimed but both are such relative newcomers that I don't know if they fit the list.)

Good list, btw. : )
