Live Poll: The Worst Horror Movie Remakes

There has been way too many awful and unneccesary remakes of horror movies, but the question is, which one butchered the original the most and should be thrown in an enternal dumbster fire?

I like how the suggestion has both panned and acclaimed remakes: subjectivity is of great appeal when it comes to polls.

FYC:
The Hitcher (2007)

Thanks! I'll add it to the list, saw it years ago and didn't realize it was a remake

Hi Henri and welcome to the poll board. : )

'Good poll and good list! It's also constructed really well, which is really impressive for a first poll.
I'd probably vote for either 'The Hitcher' or 'Wicker Man.'

May I suggest three small edits to the intro? ('edits below in bold)

There have been way too many awful and unneccesary remakes of horror movies, but the question is, which one butchered the original the most and should be thrown in an eternal dumpster fire?

(has > have)
(enternal > eternal)
(dumpster > dumpster)

Henri,

Thank you making the corrections.

By the way, English is the second language for many of the poll authors. The other poll authors and I do our best to help each other improve the quality of polls.

Either The Ring or The Grudge - both lousy American remakes of brilliant Japanese originals

It the theatrical movie isn't a remake of It the tv mini-series. It shouldn't be on there. It's like saying The Nutcracker tv movie is a remake of The Nutcracker theatrical movie...

Psycho (1998) was a disappointment for me. Norman Bates as depicted by Anthony Perkins was a shy, repressed figure who has never had a functioning relationship to another  human being. Norman Bates as depicted by Vince Vaughn is a hulking brute, who openly masturbates before his murders.

Perkins' version was intenionally written as a tortured sould, a somewhat sympathetic murderer. Not at all evident in the remake.

I am not much of a fan of the 1999 version of "The Haunting" either, but for a different reason. Hill House itself is supposed to be mysterious and disturbing. The second film turned Hugh Crain into a serial killer who tries to keep hold of the souls of his victims. Not all the implication from the original novel and film. and it rather removes the mystery and ambiguity from the story.  It is another good-versus-evil fight.

Evil Dead (2013)
Absolute trash

I disagree.
It might be that most fans of the original dislike its stereotypical "serious" approach to tell the story, which was somewhat goofy originally, but other than that, I actually prefer it to the original.

I'm surprised Prom Night (2008) didn't make the list that movie was dreadful!

James The Movie Guy I kinda like this movie (opening scene sets the mood surprisingly well), but I can see why most people were less than impressed.

Hey there - a great idea for a poll, and it is So great that you included most popular remakes, even if they are critically acclaimed by most. As one guy said before, objectivity is something to safeguard, when it comes to giving the freedom of expression of opinions.
Anyway, I havent seen the remake, but for me it has to be Martyrs, if only because I just Cant think of Any way you could do the original justice by remaking it, or the fact that most people find it awful anyway.
However, most people might disagree with me, but I consider Suspiria the best horror remake Ive ever seen - partially because I dislike the original with a passion, and partially because the remake was one of my all time favorite cinema experiences Ive ever had. I still cant decide whether it, or The House That Jack Built is my fave movie of 2018.
