Live Poll: The Real Top 35 Hollywood Blockbusters of All Time - Inflation Adjusted

Filmsite.org, who was polite enough to mention that the IMDb, Boxoffice.com, Boxofficemojo.com, and The-numbers.com in their intro to ALL-TIMETOP 100 FILMS (Domestic Gross, Inflation-Adjusted), said, as of July 1, 2018, these were the top 35 films for the USA domestic box office. These are the real Hollywood box office blockbusters, not the lists that only use today’s actuals and forget to adjust the box office for ticket inflation for the older films, aka, count the number of tickets sold. However there is one big flaw in this list and that is many of the films have been released more than once. In fact, one orginally flopped, and later found its true audience in a re-release in the 1950s and 1960s. With that being said, it still does not take away from the accomplishments of those that had only one release and still made the list. Which one of these films is your favorite?

They are listed in order from highest to lowest. If you want to see the rest of the 100 list, use the link in this description.

The one that had flopped in it’s orginnal release but found success with it’s re- releases was “Fantasia”.

With that done... FINALLY! A list that pits all the Hollywood Box Office Monster or Bad Boys* against each other. I was hoping a Harry Potter film would get there but, alas, the top one was 79th on the list, “Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone” right after 78, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

I had originally had thought of calling this list that but changed my mind because it was misleading.

Update: according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, “The Incredibles 2 is now on the top 100 all time list, adjust for inflation at position 73 and climbing with $524,198,492 And pushed Harry and close encounters to 79 and 80. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/...

Look, the point being, some people are calling some films bigger hit than others just based on Box office actuals without adjusting for ticket inflation when the truth is one movie had sold more tickets at a lower price that another movie a decade later had sold tickets at a higher price at the same theater. The one who sold more tickets is the bigger hit. Quoting actuals is misleading when talking about all time movie hits.

dgranger,
I updated your original post to include the link to your list.

- - -

Ideally a title should be as short as possible while still being meaningful. The introduction and question in your poll should expand upon the title.

Please shorten the title of your thread from:
What is Your Favorite Top 35 USA Domestic Box Office Grossing Movie of All Time - Inflation Adjusted

To:
Favorite Top 35 USA Domestic Box Office - Inflation Adjusted

- - -

Please correct the spelling of discuss, from:
Decuss the films here.

To:
Discuss the films here.

Avengers: Infinity War and Sleeping Beauty should switch places.

Correction:
In fact one original flopped and later found its true audience in a re-release in the 1950s and 1960s.

dgranger,

As Jessica points out above, in your list, please correct:
In fact one orginnal flopped and later found it’s true audience in a re-release in the 1950s and 1960s.

To:

Changes done. Sorry it took me so long. Didn’t notice the comment until just now. The comment was made when I was working 10 hours a day during my company’s peak season in order to prep for the Christmas season. A lot of things slipped by me during that time

Close, but no cigar; please change:

Also, Sleeping Beauty should be at #34, and Infinity War at #35.

FYI, Infinity War and Black Panther 2018 grosses might have inched up a bit over the past few months. Plus, the list reset when it was adjusted for inflation to early January 2019. It might be worthwhile to check entire list order as it moved from 2018 dollars to 2019 dollars and reset the effective date from July 1, 2018  to January 15, 2019 https://www.filmsite.org/boxoffice3.html.

I made the changes and checked the updated list ( no changes there except the date). And Ed, I was still ducking the snowflakes this morning and driving through this winter storm “Jayden”.(?!?)( Since when they started naming winter blizzards like they do for tropical hurricanes?) Anyway, the driving was slow, dangerous, slippery and treacherous.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) probably outgrossed all of these.

When adjusted for inflation, yes it probably did.

I concur with that thought too but this poll is based on recorded records and “BoaN” was released before even the USA started keeping records.
