Lassie was really a character and a stage name for multiple (male) dogs.

Peter, that's totally correct! Why did I take Lassie into consideration? Although multiple dogs portrayed Lassie, the IMDb entry refers to the character ‘Lassie’, not to an individual animal performer. There is an actor entry on IMDb that refers to Lassie the Dog!

In the original "Lassie" TV series, the character Lassie was portrayed by multiple dogs rather than a single animal. This was done for practical production reasons: the series ran for many years, filming schedules were demanding, and different dogs were used for endurance, specific skills, and continuity.

All dogs portraying Lassie were male, even though the character is female. Male collies were preferred because they maintain a more consistent appearance over time, avoiding visible changes such as pregnancy or seasonal coat variation.

The first and most influential dog to portray Lassie was "Pal", whose performance defined the character. I could Name Pal in the option for building the character. Pal’s descendants were later trained to take over the role, ensuring visual and behavioral consistency throughout the series.

For this reason, Lassie is best understood as a single fictional character portrayed by multiple trained dogs, rather than as one individual animal. Uggie from the Artist also had a "double", but also even had a Stone at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.

I added this little line at the beginning of the option:

"Pal, the first dog, which gave Lassie the necessary start for being a star."

Is that ok, so far?

I don't think that Neal the Lion would count, but he has an amazing biograpy that is fun to read.
