Live Poll: Most Hated Movie Characters

Sometimes, a character is so despicable in a movie that we end up hating the actor in real life. Our brain is weird like that sometimes.

Which is the most hated character portrayed in a movie?

The list can be found here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls024542582/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/jJ8PxsNwlcE/

I wouldn't say I went as far as hating the actor (maybe adding an "almost" to that statement wouldn't hurt) but I don't think I hated a character with the same fierce intensity as I did to Gregor Anton (Charles Boyer in Gaslight)

You make a good point. I changed the description to "...we end up almost hating the actor...". And I added the character you suggested to the list.

Thank you for your help (:

Add another vote for Angela Lansbury in the original (and should have been only) Manchurian Candidate who caused the most visceral reaction.

Second place goes to Fred MacMurray. After watching him weasel out in The Caine Mutiny, I could never laugh at his sitcom, or accept him in a good-guy role.

Cameron (Dylan Kussman) in "Dead Poets Society".
Unfortunately there's no main image on imdb of him in this movie. I'm really surprised given the popularity of the movie.

So annoying that snitch

Yes, unfortunately, there's no main image of the character, but I add him to the list, with the name of the character and the name of the actor in the description, even though is not ideal.

Thank you for your suggestion (:

Speaking of Cameron, I just love what Ebert said about him and that echoed my personal sentiment:

When Keating is being railroaded by the school administration (which makes him the scapegoat for his student's suicide), one of the students acts as a fink and tells the old fogies what they want to hear. Later, confronted by his peers, he makes a hateful speech of which not one word is plausible except as an awkward attempt to supply him with a villain's dialogue. Then one of the other boys hits him in the jaw, to great applause from the audience. The whole scene is utterly false and seems to exist only so that the violence can resolve a situation that the screenplay is otherwise unwilling to handle.

Cameron wasn't the most enthusiastic from the start but yeah, he became a dirty rat just like that out of nowhere and I just couldn't buy it, the only thing that could have made his 'monologue' acceptable was to 'forgive' Charlie for the punch in the jaw, that he didn't hesitate to rat on him for that too made him too villainous to be believable.

Cameron was a rat bastard before turning on Keating.

I didn't like him, I think most people hate this character.
In other hands, I really like Charlie. I also liked the others, but Charlie surprised me by appearing to be the typical bad-ass student, who tries to impress his classmates. Yes he maybe be kind of and I little reckless
I expected him to report his friends when Mr. Nolan punished him but when Neil asked him if he had denounced them and he said "Damn Neil, the name is Nuwanda" I realized that after all he may be the most interesting character and the most loyalty.

... and when he punches Cameron, it was the icing on the cake

Billy Zane plays a terrific villain (not only in Titanic but also Posse and Demon Knight, and probably a whole bunch of additional movies). He is not all that annoying, though. He actually kind of funny, due to his characters' eccentric reactions to frustrations.

Try the wick witch of the west/ Miss Glurch from the “Wizard of Oz” . Even though Margret Hamilton was a very nice person in real life, she usually played the hateful nagging prude in films. Sometimes she played the nice persons too until she played the witch. That locked into playing heavies for the rest of her career.

"Oh, Darth Vader too." Ah-Ah, we only have room for one Star Wars character. You'll find that some people were displeased not only with Mister No-mesa-stay and Lord Youngling-killer, but also Senator Lost-the-will-to-live and the crackling boss Sith, in addition to Number 2187onahook, Lord Gimme-my-grandfather-lightaber and Master Time-for-the-Jedi-to-end, plus every child who has appeared (except for little Rey and little Jyn); possibly C-3PO too. Each time a new installment comes out, a new point of controversy arises, it seems. It is not even pleasant to even consider discussing.

I don't see Darth Vader as a hated character. I think he's a villain that people love, just like the Joker.

For some reason, I can’t see why all this hatred for Jar Jar Binks some he is annoying But hated? No.
However you did say that there is one spot still left open. I’m going to suggest six or more characters that are so hated you may want remove Jar Jar in order to replace him with one these. In fact one actor excelled at playing villains so much you wanted to see his arrogant sneer get wiped off his face in many movies. That intellectual arrogance and the look down his nose passing judgement that made him a natural to play Sherlock Holmes also, when he mixed it with envy, malice, cruelty and vindictiveness, made him one of the best hated movie a**holes of all time. Of course, I’m referring to the actor Basil Rathbone in his roles of :
- Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
- Major Brand in The Dawn Patrol (1938)
- Richard - Duke of Gloucester in Tower of London (1939).
- Capt. Esteban Pasquale in The Mark of Zorro (1940)
-Sir Ravenhurst in The Court Jester (1955)
- Marquis St. Evrémonde in A Tale of Two Cities (1935)

And speaking of “The Adventures Of Robin Hood”, Claude Reins as Prince John. In fact a face-off poll as to “Who is hated more in that movie: Sir Guy or Prince John?” could be made on that alone.

- George Sanders as Shere Khan the Tiger in The Jungle Book (1967)

Which one of the 6 movies would you recommend for me to put on the list? Or better yet, which one of the 6 characters played by Basil Rathbone do you think got the most hate?

Well, the main reason behind the hate for Jar Jar Binks ("the key to all this") is kind of on the technical side, in that his presence in the story and portrayal "felt" out of place, as many find him to be annoying, which seems to be partly what the PS list is about. (I won't bother to go into the details as of yet.) However, Binks in his foolishness of "good intentions" did play a major part in the formation of the principal antagonist faction of the Episodes IV, V and VI. The thing is, why blame him? Palpatine is actually the essential assailant, and he would have found a way to destroy and supplant the "guardians of peace and justice", no matter what.

Onpantsbatman, I hate them all. My pick would be Sir Guy with Prince John a close second. Others would Captain Pasquale or Major Brand. Let the people following this poll choose.

I don't think P.L. Travers belongs here. She's perhaps not very likable at first, but she's hardly on the same level as the other characters.

Also, you have the wrong character from Braveheart; it should be his father: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112573/mediaviewer/rm2123858176

The characters hated most are usually child abusers, but I don't think anybody will be in the mood to nominate those characters. Plus, most of the memorable, popular movies in any given era usually don't contain any elements of child abuse, elder abuse or handicap abuse.

I think throughout the saga, the feeling towards Draco Malfoy developed from hate to some sort of pity. When people recall Draco after seeing the eight movies, it's not hate that pops up to mind.

It is really different from the book. Yes, in the end you pity him. In the books, you see that he is having second thoughts about Voldemort. It is when Harry enters the picture that his hate for harry blocks out everything else. He was upset at witnessing the murder of one his teachers in front of his face. In hollows, he does orginnally say that he was a death eater after his two supposed friends tried to kill him on voldemorte’s orders. It was only when he had time to think a little. He joins the students against Voldemort’s. In the film, he walks across to Voldemort at voldemort’s Promises. But in the book, he was the one to yell “Lair” or something like that, and his yell proved the power of Voldemort weakening because Voldemort had cast a silence spell the students.
