I should hope to see some participation from poll makers (which I'm not directly) before I try to make up my mind. (I would probably express the same thing, even if I was a bonafide poll maker.)

O! I didn't even realize that I was responding to a comment appearing on the second page of this thread. A whole lot of poll board participants have already offered up nominations already. I will check to see whether or not Stanley Kubrick is already on the list.

(Jeorj Euler here, obviously.) Okay, I will have to think of somebody besides Stanley Kubrick. So many great filmmakers have existed. I suppose that I might be happy to nominate Rob Zemeckis and Michael Haneke. Somebody else could nominate the Safdie brothers, but most likely nobody will want to do that. I've only just recently even become aware of such a duo. On a side note, I'm interested in seeing more of Ruben Östlund's work. Ideally, we all want to pick somebody who stands a chance of winning, but some of the filmmakers who most intrigue me are known for independent films that have little coverage in the United States.

I forgot to even consider Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven who has been great in regards to shock value and, to a lesser extent, satire. For those of you who've only seen his United States work, please check out Spetters.

@jeorj_euler FYC, still waiting on your picks. I can identify even with two picks, it is still hard to whittle the field of favorite directors down.

I'm confused. Is this Jessica's poll suggestion? Or it urbanemovies's poll suggestion? I don't know. How about adding Rob Zemeckis and Paul Verhoeven? I've not seen more than two or three movies directed by some of the other names I had mentioned.

@jeorj_euler Its hers, but I don't want you to miss out, as the available spots are down to just (2x4) four members picks and you indicated an interest. Plus, at some point the poll suggestion will go live.

@jeorj_euler

There is no reason to apologize. I had a hard time picking just two too, plus I have already changed my mind once, and I am still second guessing my picks now. If I had ten choices, it wouldn't be enough. I noticed your comments and can sympathize. You can appreciate each of these directors for their talent, craft, skill and specialty.

I think some are the best directors in the niche they have carved out and no one comes even close to them. My problem, and I think a lot of other people too, is that they recognize that too, making this a tough selection, ie. Do I want to see Alfred Hitchcock direct a Rom-Com? No-way, but as the Master of Suspense, he has no rival. I really like this poll idea though.

Plus, I think it is a good idea to get your picks in now, if you change your mind, you adjust your picks, so long as your choice is still available, up to the moment the poll goes live.

@GabrielFox Sorry, you missed out on Tarantino, you just missed out on his availability by only a couple of hours. He was a great pick, but there still a lot of directors left to choose from and you can nominate your second and third favorites. These are the directors already selected, List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls566418441/.

You should pick whoever you want, but these names still remain available: Isao Takahata, Ingmar Bergman, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson, Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, J.J. Abrahms, Todd Phillips, Todd Field, Christopher Columbus, Sam Raimi, Tim Burton, Ang Lee, Rob Reiner, Michael Bay, Joss Whendon, Zack Snder, Tony Scott, Robert Rodriguez, Charlie Chaplin, Paul Thomas Anderson, Orson Welles, William Wyler, John Huston, Howard Hawks, Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Michael Curtiz, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Sergio Leone, Luc Besson, Denis Villeneuve, Patty Jenkins, Nora Ephron, Kathryn Bigelow, Sophia Coppola, Greta Gerwig, Mira Nair, The Wachowski Sisters, Jordan Peele and plenty of others (too many too list).

If you'd like, Jessica, my attribute within the options can be expressed with the markup code [link=ur0932020]Jeorj Euler[/link], but perhaps my main profile (with nothing but badges visible thus far) isn't as interesting of a look a s my forum participant profile which is how most poll authors seem to credit me.

Yes, Paul Thomas Anderson is another intriguing one, but a little less "weird" (or for that matter, "queer") than Todd Solondz.

Hi Jess,

Thanks for the heads up about allowing two. For my first, I'll stick with the Coen brothers (since they work together, is it ok that I choose both for my first choice?).

Choosing my second was somehow even more difficult. Otter made it a little easier by choosing John Sayles so I no longer have to consider him, who I was actually considering for my first. : ) Off the top of my head, I'm left with Krzysztof Kieslowski, Truffaut, Sebastian Lelio, Sean Baker, Spike Lee, Yimou Zhang, Celine Sciamma, and Claire Denis. 'Really tough choice but since there are, so far, no women on the list, I'll go with Celine Sciamma or Claire Denis. And to stop being indecisive and dramatic, lol, I'll just pick one: Celine Sciamma. That felt like ripping a bandage off, lol.

So there you have it: The Coen brothers (it doesn't matter to me if you picture Joel or Ethan) and Celine Sciamma.

Thanks Sara. Yes, directing duos are counted as one option, so the Coen brothers and Céline Sciamma have been added. Nice to have a woman in the list. :)

Yes, Céline Sciamma is a spectacular option. I've seen several of her movies without initially realizing she was responsible for each of them.

She is most known for Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. But, Petite Maman is an excellent film. I also adore what she has written for Audiard (Les Olympiades, Paris 13e)

Hi, @Jessica

Could you remove both my picks from the list? I have decided not to participate on this poll. It is not your fault. I won't discuss my reasons further as to not insult anyone.

Thank you. And, sorry for the inconvenience :)

There may exist some of us who are insult-proof, though. Interestingly, I probably wouldn't have participated in this poll suggestion process if not for urbanemovies's multicast, since I hadn't been following the thread prior to that time. Had I expected anybody to withdraw, I also probably would not have participated, since I don't really take an interest in claiming to have a favorite of anything. In all honesty, favorites change over time, and sometimes all favorites may be tied all the time for long periods of time. In way, polls like these are also way too personal.

@Jessica

I like how this worked out for the most part with the two picks. I also noticed an unexpected benefit; most members seemed to have a safe pick and a bold pick.

One director that was a favorite and recognized more commercially and critically than the other, and a second pick who was a favorite that was less recognized for their work, but you can still see the greatness or at least the potential to be great in their work. I think some members were bolder than others, but even then you can see the differences between the two picks, both for those who were bolder and safer in their selections.

The only reason I participated is because urbanemovies tagged me among several, more than once, I think. Shortly before the thing went live Maxence withdrew his nomination, leaving me to wonder what in the actual fuck is going on here. Hahaha!
