Live Poll: Happy Hanksgiving — A Day to Celebrate Tom Hanks

Hanksgiving is an event celebrated the fourth Thursday of each November since 2009. Often, it is confused with another holiday that falls on the same day, Hanksgiving has it's own traditions and menu. A typical celebration includes a Tom Hanks-inspired feast, the company of friends and family and the watching of Tom Hanks movies all day long.

Which combination of a Tom Hanks-inspired menu dish and Tom Hanks movie/TV series would you most like to have a helping of this Hanksgiving holiday?

A special thanks to yrnej for her many suggestions. Celebrate Hanksgiving 2018 with these: Serious Eats Hanksgiving Recipes or Vulture Hanksgiving Recipes

Don't see your favorite Tom Hanks movie or TV series listed and/or have an idea for a Tom Hanks-inspired menu dish that plays off the title, make a suggestion.

2019 Greyhound i.e. upcoming Tom Hanks movie about HMS GREYHOUND destroyer in WW2. Hanksgiving menu item: Greyhound Puppies, a depth charge-shaped hush puppy deep-fried and spiced with British mixed spice to give it a little extra kick when they go down.

Urb,

What an wondrously awful collection of puns. Did you ever work in the advertising industry?

My vote:
Catch Me If You Can (2002)

I like Turnips & Hooch, for its playful turn on the title; but I am with you Catch Me If You Cran-berries sounds the most appetizing. Most of these are Tom Hanks inspired Hanksgiving menu items with actual recipes from Serious Eats Hanksgiving Recipes or Vulture Hanksgiving Recipes.

Catch Me If You Cran-berries:
As colorful and festive as a sixties airport lounge!

Ingredients:

1 12-ounce bag of cranberries
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
Zest and juice of 1 orange
1 tbs. finely chopped ginger
1 whole star anise
1 cinnamon stick

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together in a pan and simmer until the cranberries are very soft and the liquid is thick and jammy, about 20 minutes. Recipe by Tejal Rao; restaurant critic, Bloomberg

The rest Jen or I came up on our own, when this was a poll suggestion on the old message boards, Jen was a big help. It was not that difficult with over fifty Tom Hanks movie titles to work with and the menu items only have to sound good, not necessarily taste good. Plus,  you can use an existing recipe and just add the pun-able ingredient to make it work. The tough part is the time involved and having the pun pop into your head.

I have added some more, so here's a new one, if you appreciate wonderfully awful puns.

Saving Mr. Banks 2013 | Movie 7.5 (134,721)
Hanksgiving menu item: Glazing Mr. Shanks
Braised pork shanks covered in a pineapple, orange and brown sugar glaze

Thanks, I did find interesting, especially the famous pun masters and its place in history. How did you ever run across it?

Urb,

It appeared in the Pocket Recommendations in Firefox.

Pocket Recommendations in Firefox FAQ
https://help.getpocket.com/article/1142-firefox-new-tab-recommendations-faq

I probably would have eventually come across the article. I'm a big fan of puns, word play and the word origins.

Cool, I love pocket too,

I probably read a half dozen articles a day from my Firefox browser. I either missed it or we are set up for different interests. I found it interesting too, as I am a origins fan too and the story behind the story stuff.

Hi Urb, what a great poll! I noticed one small typo in option #1: "latter" instead of "later." There's some great wordplay in this poll, though, so I might just be missing the usage. :)

When/where did I make suggestions on this?

Few edits:
1. - I think it's more accurate to say "a delicious, crispy skin" - turkey doesn't have a crust unless it is part of a turkey pot pie.
24. - You have periods at the end of all of the descriptions but this one.
25. - The outer skin of citrus fruits is called zest. I suggest changing rinds to zest.
30. - You need a space between button mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms.

Corrected, I made the suggested edits. Thanks again for all your help.

You made these unique suggestions for Hanksgiving 2016: A Soy Story Too, Pig, Mode to Perfection Salad, Punch Lime, Dough versus the Volcano, The Bean Pile, Ladyfinger Chillers, The 'Herbs and Philadelphia Cheese Cake. Although, I may have tweaked the recipes or description a bit, in some cases. You also put me onto a second article that had a bunch Tom Hanks inspired Hanksgiving menu items that helped fill out the answer pool. As a result, you are either directly or indirectly responsible for over half the answer pool items.

The outer colored part of the peel of citrus fruit has the following synonyms: zest, rind, peel and skin, it is just a matter of personal preference.

I was curious to see what would drive the votes; the title, the menu item or the wit, when the question asks which combination do you prefer. So, far early votes would seem to indicate the title seems to be driving force, as some more appetizing menu items have lower totals than their less tasty counterparts.
