Which river?

Saint Francis River in Missouri.

This happened over 35 years ago.

A "friend" and his wife convinced my wife and me to kayak and canoe down this river. Unfortunately, the river was very low at the time. This meant that we either had to paddle a lot because of very slow flow or traverse class 4 rapids. Normally the trip would take 2 hours, but it ended up taking 8 hours.

At the end of the trip we encountered a group of people in the dark who looked liked they were out of Deliverance. This group had shotguns and was illegally shining and netting fish. As we were attaching the kayak to our car, we had a downpour.

Wow, crazy story Dan! Glad you were OK, that's pretty freaky.

Sounded like a harsh one. Glad you made it safely. Me, down baby rapids on a two long week high school trip in Quetico national park (the spelling is incorrect) in Canada . Enough to give you a taste but not enough put any of us in any real danger. We portaged around some really bad ones.

And Huck had the journey down the Mississippi with Jim. The bad part of that one is that a riverboat destroys the raft Jim and Huck were on.
