Chris Hemsworth aka Thor Odinson - not because he's my favorite actor but because that character will stick to him like glue

I think you should keep one entry from every film / series or franchise, the most emblematic one for instance...

Also I'm not sure that Arnie is only defined by his role as the Terminator, same for Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger.

Okay then, I will keep Daniel RadcliffeKit Harington & Matthew Perry from their respective franchises, thanks for the suggestions.

Why not Ledger? How about "Brokeback Mountain"? I know this sounds crazy ;) but some would value that performance a little more than the Joker...
And I didn't even mention "The Patriot"....

Leo McKern as Rumpole of the Bailey. After watching the series, I read several of the source novels, clearly hearing his voice in my head throughout. That made the books even more enjoyable.

Despite playing a zillion characters in long-running tv shows, Harry Morgan will always be Colonel Sherman Potter from MASH. The game could be said for most of the principal cast, but I picked him because it stood out in the longest career.

Can George Wendt enter a crowded room without someone yelling"Norm!!" even after so many years since Cheers ended?

while i applaud your poll question, me thinks the list needs a tweeking...

i know others have suggested it here but there are quite a few on the list that i associate with characters other than the ones listed...

shatner, for example, is kirk no doubt...but...he won many emmys for his role as denny crane on 'boston legal'....cumberbatch is sherlock and dr. strange...keanu is neo and john wick...robert downey jr. was nominated for an oscar for best actor as charlie chaplin....johnny depp too numerous to mention....even mark hamill is luke as well as the joker (animated features)....and there are others as well on this list....

maybe if you chose actors who weren't so well established with a canon of roles behind them....

Agreed, the list needs some tweaking.

I think the list is very good but agreed that Shatner doesn't quite belong: I think to many, he's Denny Crane.

Hugh Jackman has many great roles, I don't think is fais to say he is forever defined as Wolverine.

FYC:

George Reeves as Superman
Adam West as Batman
Bela Lugosi as Dracula
Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolfman

Keanu Reeves is also known for Neo in the Matrix and Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula. I don't think that he fits this poll.

'Good poll (!) but when I think of Heath Ledger, I first think Brokeback Mountain and then Monster's Ball. I'd think that Brokeback Mountain is just as much of his signature role as the Joker.

raymond burr...harry morgan...rowan atkinson...william shatner....all need to come off....

burr...ironside

morgan...joe friday

atkinson...johnny english

shatner...denny crane

these characters are equally as synonymous with their counterparts on your list...in fact, atkinson is planning to start his fourth johnny english film as soon as allowed...i will always think of henry morgan as joe friday...didn't care for him in mash...a generation grew up with raymond burr as ironside...and shatner is crane...denny crane...'nuff said....

Cyril, there is a very similar poll: Actors Who Could Never Break Free of Their Iconic Role

Perhaps you would consider making a Part 2, and remove the overlapping options?

Jessica,

Silitonga has considered actors from only movies, so should I be making a part 2 of it or just leave it as it is?

Usually a Part 2 should not include any options from the previous part, but you could keep the TV roles if you wish.

I did the necessary changes and kept the actor(Mr. Bean) who is in the TV role also.

I don't think Benedict Cumberbatch is famous for playing Sherlock Holmes (or as the title says "defined" by it.)

As per IMDb, these are the top four films he's known for:

I think Doctor Strange (character) made him more famous than Sherlock Holmes.

Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh

No Boris Karloff yet? I think he will always be the Frankenstein.

John Wayne - not any particular character, but he is the westerner character. If that fits your poll.

FYC:

Sigourney Weaver - Ripley

Weasley Snipes - Blade
