Live Face-Off Poll: Five Stages of Theater

Let's switch from the screen to the stage for a moment. Throughout history, before there was such a thing as film, changing styles of plays and performances have captured audiences' minds. For a trip to the theater, which of these five types of productions would you prefer to see?

Dance/Ballet
Opera
Play
Musical
Variety/Stand-up/other

Peter,

I recommend "Modes of Theater" or "Kinds of Theater" instead of "Stages of Theatre".

Mode
https://www.onelook.com/?w=mode&ls=a&loc=home_ac_Mode
[countable] [usually singular] formal a particular fashion or style of art, literature, clothes, etc.mode of:

a novel written in the mode of a detective story

He had no intention of changing his mode of attire.

= = =

I enjoy all four kinds or modes of theater, in this order of preference:

Musical
Play
Opera
Ballet

Those titles are no fun. It's supposed to be a play on words.

OK, I missed the pun.

But perhaps it should be 'Stages of Theater' instead of 'theatre'?

I'll change it since I guess IMDb prefers American spelling.

Opera and in that case I have to travel to the European countries because in India, there is no opera.

Wow, really? I would not have guessed that about the big cities. I just realized that I've seen more opera overseas than in the States: I only saw one opera here but saw one in Hong Kong and one in Helsinki, Finland. I have to see more.

Ballet (mostly modern ballet, which is on my avatar/photo) and, despite being a former dancer, plays: It will be difficult to decide but ballet will probably edge out plays because of modern ballet.

I really like your images for two, three, and four; if you're interested, here are some photos that could be used for ballet:

I used to be (although at about fifteen yrs old, I switched from classical ballet to modern ballet, although still trained in classical, of course)  but injured my knees so that was cut short. I still dance sometimes but I can't do it seriously anymore. I miss it, though, a lot.

Do you mean a photo on Facebook or my IMDb profile pic? The IMDb one is a photo of male dancers from the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, which is one of my favorite companies. There was no special reason for me choosing that photo -- that was nine years ago but I remember that I think I had just seen them perform and that I think that I was just trying to find a photo that fit, lol. I've kept it, though, because, well, the color is kind of a ruby-ish color, and because I've just gotten used to it, and also because when other people changes their photos, it confuses me, lol -- I like knowing who posted something as soon as I see that little icon/photo. :)

Was there any particular reason you didn't like the ballet image? I was trying to use more contemporary images, and Sergei Polunin is someone you could actually go see perform.

3 out of 4 with music? Maybe we should expand the "play" option to other categories.
How about stand-up comedy or as they say "one-man-show" (they don't really qualify as plays) or shows that feature a series of sketches or monologues (not all of them are plays) If you get many options, you can still combine ballet and opera (both go under the "classical music" category)

By the way, a fifth option would be good so you can have "five stages of theatre" for the title :)

I will consider a fifth option, but I'm not sure what's best. I also thought about 'Variety'.

Variety/entertainment/stand-up, there must be a generic term yes. The idea is of some form of entertainment that doesn't rely on the classic play structure (unity of time, space, plot etc.)

I've added an option.

Question still states:
For a trip to the theater, which of these four classic types of productions would you prefer to see?

Please change to:

I used to frequently go experience and enjoy modern dance from the Paul Taylor Dance Company (but it's been years since I've last seen them).  Haven't seen them now they're homed in the Lincoln Center.

Love the combination of modern dance and contemporary instrumental/classical music.  And I Hate ballet.

But for this?  Ultimately, I rather prefer musicals though I can't afford the tickets.  Modern dance tickets can be really affordable (win/win with cheap tickets and excellent music, atmosphere, and witnessing the grace of modern dance makes for a wonderful change of cultural pace).

I sometimes go to the ballet here in Copenhagen. I prefer the more modern stuff too. Ballet can be modern!

The dance option is struggling in the poll, though.

I'm surprised opera only has five votes so far. One of them was mine.
