Live Poll: Oscar's Women of Comedy

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls024766114/

Live Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/aDvrxl1MgTA/?ref_=po_ho

Dramas tend to be nominated by the Academy more often and win more Oscars than comedies. However, acting categories tend to be levelers more so than other major prizes, such as Best Picture. This year illustrates that point well as eight of the twenty acting nominees were nominated for their portrayals in comedies. Nonetheless, performances in comedies still receive fewer Oscar wins than performances in dramas: For example, as of March 9, 2024, only 28 actresses have won the coveted statue for roles in comedies -- and that's including both Lead and Supporting roles. Of these 28, who gave your favorite performance?

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria: Some movies, of course, defy easy classification. For example, Fargo, I, Tonya, and Three Billboards were tough calls: I felt like Fargo and Three Billboards really sat right on the edge of drama and dark comedy, whereas I, Tonya felt like a full-on drama to me but is classified on IMDb as a comedy, which seemed reasonable. To make decisions on these films that seemed hard to call, I went with pbn's suggestion of deferring to awards that classify movies, such as the Golden Globes. (Thank you, Peter!)

@Peter_pbn Thank you, so much, for all of the helpful feedback!

Jennifer Lawrence: Fixed

Marisa Tomei: Added (wow, I can't believe I forgot her)

Dianne Wiest: waiting for image to be approved -- if it's not okayed by Sunday, I'll use one that's already available

Tatum O'Neal, Anjelica Huston, Eileen Heckart: I totally get why you say "arguably" -- these are a bit tough but I think I'll add them

Allison Janney: I could have sworn that, on IMDb, it was not categorized as comedy. It certainly is, though, but ugh, I'm torn. Do you know who categorizes films? I'm assuming that on IMDb, anyone can add or edit but I'm wondering if the studio or producers or any entity directly involved with the film issues categories and, if so, where I can find that information. I guess this could be considered to be somewhat of a dark comedy, but it sure felt like a drama to me. I guess I could just include it because of how it's categorized & add a brief note about including all films with any "comedy" label. 'Any one have any thoughts about these last four movies?

I wouldn't necessarily include all films with a comedy label on IMDb. Many movies have both Comedy and Drama listed, but some of them may be more drama than comedy.

As you know, some of the other award bodies separate drama and comedy, and they generally put Tonya in comedy.

I'm not sure if there is a better source.

@Peter_pbn 'Really smart idea that didn't occur to me: looking at how other awards classify films. Thanks! I'll add 'Tonya' and then search the same way for the other three films.

@rubyfruit76

I was just about to say I think 'Three Billboards' is definitely more drama than comedy. I actually don't get why it was labeled as a comedy. I also agree 'Fargo' is more of a comedy, although oddly enough IMDb doesn't label it as such.

Good poll! :)

@Jessica Thanks, Jess. And yeah, I was surprised that 'Fargo' wasn't categorized as comedy on IMDb and yet 'Three Billboards' was. I wonder where that information is coming from.

Btw, I'm so glad that you include a link to the Poll Board Suggestions on your posts: that's so helpful!

The two photos that I had submitted for two of the entries were accepted very quickly so the list is complete now. : )
