@rubyfruit76 ,

I'm happy to see that you are continuing your tradition of creating a movie heroine poll for the preceding year.

O, wow. This year is the first time I became aware of these, I think. (If I knew about the one for, say, 2017, then I definitely forgot.)

Yeah!! I was hoping to see this suggestion.

I'll start looking for more, but a first suggestion would be Gloria (America Ferrera) from Barbie, she is the true heroine of the movie as she inspires Barbie to fight and she gives the powerful feminist  monologue that brings the rest of the "brainwashed" Barbie dolls out of the power of the patriarchy.

@Pencho15 Oh my gosh, thank you! My niece and I are going to watch that together so we've had to wait until I get well enough to go to her place -- so I don't know the details yet. That's great that Ferrera has that part: I've always really liked her and her work since I saw her in 'Real Women Have Curves' and "The Good Wife" and saw her interviewed on PBS for an uninterrupted hour.

I'll definitely add her right now. Is Robbie's Barbie also a hero of the film or should I remove her?

@rubyfruit76 Oh, I hope I didn't spoil it for you :( . My girlfriend is a huge Barbie fan and I have seen the movie twice with her.

Barbie can also be considered a heroine I think, her journey is more personal than America's but still very important.

Also FYC:

Jessica Drew An African-American and pregnant female Spider-Woman from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse. The main female hero who is also really important for the storyline is Gwen Stacy who is left in a place where she'll be essential to solve things in the future third part.

Loretta McLaughlin from The Boston Strangler female reporter who challenged the sexism of the early 1960s to report on Boston's most importatn seriel killer.

@Pencho15  Oh wow, that's so great that there's a pregnant superhero and that she's African-American, too. I added her, as well as Gwen Stacy, and put that movie on my watchlist. Thank you, so much, for letting me know about them!

I saw 'Boston Stranger' last spring so actually had Loretta McLaughlin on the list already but you may have missed her because the photo's pretty dark. (It's the same picture you suggested but in that little box, the darkness is somewhat problematic.) I'm trying to find a better one from another source, which is proving difficult because most of the film is pretty dimly-lit. I liked her character a lot and I love that she's based on the real Loretta McLaughlin. If I can find a decent photo and there's room, I may add Jean Cole, too.

@Aris_Athanas  Thanks for the suggestions! I added Carol Danvers and will definitely go through the rest when I have more time. Are Kamala Kahn and Monica Rambeau also heroes of the movie?

@rubyfruit76 Indeed all three female characters in The Marvels are heroines in equal stand. However, they might take too much space in the poll, so perhaps you could add an image that includes the three of them and add them as "The Marvels", just like you did with the heroines in Joy Ride.

This is a poster, but it may work: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10676048/mediaviewer/rm357718529?ref_=ttmi_mi_all_pos_36

@Pencho15 Thanks, so much, Pencho, for the image. I had been looking for images of the three of them together using Google Images and the two good ones that I found weren't accepted by IMDb so I wasn't sure what I was going to do. The poster you suggested saved me. I figure that it will work because the three women have such huge name recognition that it's not necessary to have their faces appear close-up. Thanks again!

@Aris_Athanas I also added Jamie Hughes and Lucy Grey (and am waiting for an image of another). I had to leave a few off because I'm already at 33. Thank you, so much, for the suggestions!

Some of my favorites:

Leonie from The Teachers's Lounge

Ansa from Fallen Leaves

Eleanor from To Catch a Killer

Bella from Poor Things

oh, and the way Paula Beer/Nadja reads and talks about poetry in Afire makes her a heroine of mine :)

@albstein Thank you, so much, for these suggestions! Four of five of these movies have been on my "to see" list for 2023 films but I've only gotten to see Poor Things so far. I'm afraid Teacher's and Afire won't come to my city so it may be quite a wait until I get a chance to see those two.

Oh wow, there's poetry in Afire?! That makes me want to see it even more, of course. : )  And that makes me want to add Nadja: would it make sense?

Oh and I'm waiting for an image of Ansa to hopefully be approved. I'm waiting for about six photos for the whole list and hopefully then I can finally finish it. :)

Thanks again!

FYC:

I haven't seen the following movies, but based on the plot summaries they may fit the poll:

Nimona from Nimona, a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature and who is the only person that can save the life of a knight framed for murder and who has sworned to destroy her.

Eleanor from Misanthrope,  A talented but troubled police officer recruited by the FBI to help profile and track down a disturbed individual terrorizing the Baltimore.

Asha from Wish, A young girl who faces the king of Rosas after she discovers he is keeping all the wishes of his subjects to himself.

The Mother from The Mother, an assassin that comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she left earlier in life.

Wendy from Peter Pan & Wendy, I understand this new Disney live action remake gave Wendy a much more heroic role than in the original cartoon.

Celie from The Color Purple, A woman faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.

Debika Chatterjee from Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway, An immigrant Indian mother's battle against the Norwegian foster care system and local legal machinery to win back the custody of her children.

Oh my gosh, I forgot about Celie! I haven't seen the new movie but I've read the book a few times and seen Spielberg's film several times and Celie is definitely my kind of hero. : ) The problem was that made me forget her as a hero for this past year so thank you so much, @Pencho15

@Pencho15  I also added Eleanor, Nimona, and Debika Chatterjess. I may have room for one more if a photo is approved. Thank you, so much, for all the help! I can't wait to finally finish this one. : )

@Jessica Thanks, Jess! And another thanks for the three cheerleaders, lol. If I didn't like making polls, I might still do it just to see those cheerleader emoji. : )
