Live Poll: The Meanest Digital Artificial Intelligence

Intro:

Since science fiction movies begann to show fantasies about artificial intelligence in generell, many ideas were critical about it.

What if an artificial "brain" developes to fast or has a corrupted file that acts like a sleeper - with delay! What if your robot turns to muder? What if a complete networked structure turns against you?

There were many ideas about bad artificial intelligences. Please remember the persons in the movies, affected by these artificial intelligences in their specific situations.

Which of them seems to be the meanest nightmare?

Scare us here.

Rules:

The movies of the suggested a.i.s should better be rated 7.0/10 or higher, but I do amens for really fitting suggestions down to 6.5/10. Animated allowed. Documentations allowed. "Artificial intelligence" based on computer programms was first named in 1956, I would like to use the modern understanding of a.i.s in the suggestions. I know that there already were phantasies of artificial persons in 17xx A.D., but this is about more reality-bound processing-units-based a.i.s.

@Breumaster,

A long time ago, I wrote about a hierarchy of user interfaces (UI) under a different venue than IMDb. This is a summary from what I remember. This is not directly related to your poll, but I thought you and others may find this interesting.

Fully User Symbiotic - Device directly interacts with the host / user and is implanted.

Partially User Symbiotic - Device directly interacts with the host / user and is not implanted.

User Intuitive - Device anticipates what the user wants to do and performs that actions that the user desires.

User Friendly - Device works in a way that is easy for user interaction.

User Unfriendly - Device works in a way that is difficult for user interaction.

User Hostile - Device actively works against the interests of the user.

User Lethal - Interacting with the device may lead to the death of the user.

Partly I have those forms of a.i. on the list like e.g. Samatha (User Intuitive). I guess this will give us more ideas. :)

Thank you for suggesting. I will put it on the list. Can you please give me an underline for the a.i. like in the other options - like Skynet, Hal-5000, or Samantha, something to compare with.

Just going to suggest this because after reading title immediately thought of Glados from Portal (2007).

It is a video game, not a movie but if you are not committed to movie only then this AI needs to be included.

@ndbportmanfan_1

Thank you, portmanfan. I don't do this in general. The only thing I would mix with movies would be tv-series. But for me, it feels wrong to mix up tv-series or movies with computer-games.  These two things are still separated things for me. And I'm an old gamer, one of the first. I do really like games, but no, sorry.

Breumaster,

For your consideration:

Colossus from Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/plotsummary

  • Forbin is the designer of an incredibly sophisticated computer [Colossus] that will run all of America's nuclear defenses. Shortly after being turned on, it detects the existence of Guardian, the Soviet counterpart, previously unknown to US Planners. Both computers insist that they be linked, and after taking safeguards to preserve confidential material, each side agrees to allow it. As soon as the link is established the two become a new Super computer and threaten the world with the immediate launch of nuclear weapons if they are detached. Colossus begins to give its plans for the management of the world under its guidance. Forbin and the other scientists form a technological resistance to Colossus which must operate underground.

Artificially intelligent mechanical arms developed by Dr. Octavius in Spider-Man 2 (2004)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316654/plotsummary

  • Peter Parker's having a rough time. His double life as the super hero Spider-Man is having a devastating impact on his civilian life. Things are so bad he declares that he's quitting and never putting on the suit again. However, his sense of duty forces him to become a hero again when the brilliant scientist Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed in an accident and becomes Dr. Octopus. With four metal tentacles sticking out of his back, he'll prove to be a more than worthy opponent for Spider-Man.

Hi, Breumaster. The list item description for The Matrix, should be the at least following or something else entirely:

The Architect and its subroutines (Agent Smith copies)

Now, that is grammatically correct, but it may not capture well the spirit of the adversaries at hand in the saga, plus the Architect's gender is most likely as masculine. I would suggest the following:

The System (the Machines and the Architect), and rogue retired Programs, notably Smith

This is due to the Machine civilization being so multifaceted. The movies do not make it abundantly clear what the exact nature of the relationship between the Machines and the Architect is, as to whether one is subordinate to the other, they have mutual terms of association or their relationship is more complex. For all we know, the Architect, the Oracle, maybe some other subroutines and the various actual robotic beings (the literal deus ex machina) outside of the Matrix serve on some kind of committee that allows for a cohesive management of the affairs inside and outside the Matrix (such as alike command of Agents and Sentinels), in regards to the war with (or enslavement of) humanity, whereby the Architect had long ago sold the Machines a bill of goods as to the most appropriate ways to manage the human civilization and, to a lesser extent, programs that move between the Matrix and other "places" wherever programs can exist. Since they are AI, they can arrive at consensuses and decisions much faster than people, and they probably are better at learning from mistakes.

Artificial Intelligence was that named first time in 1956:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_artificial_intelligence

So I would keep out all movies made before.

The first computer which just did the basic calculating was the Z1, buildt by Konrad Zuse in 1941.

It was also called "Zuse 1". Before, artificial intelligence was not the same like in modern tales.

I will declare it by completing the topic a little.

That's not really a viable frame of reference.

Ok, maybe this is a more viable thing:

Quote of Wikipedia about G.O.R.T. :

"The nature of Gort was almost completely altered in the 2008 remake. Gort's name was revised as an acronym assigned to the robot by the United States' military and scientists: G.O.R.T., which stands for "Genetically Organized Robotic Technology". The acronym is only used once. G.O.R.T. is significantly taller than Gort, being about twenty-eight feet tall as opposed to eight feet. Much like the original Gort, G.O.R.T does not speak. Unlike the original Gort, G.O.R.T. is on Earth specifically to save it from humanity: if the human race doesn't change its ecological destructiveness by a certain time, it will destroy humanity to save the Earth's biosphere. He is neutralized by Klaatu at the end of the film with a massive EMP that also shuts down all of humanity's electrical technology."

Quote end. reference:

GORT

(The 2008 depiction section)

It is about the 2008 G.O.R.T. - I guess someone read the book and completed the facts in the movie. G.O.R.T. is not an artificial intelligence. It's genetically, it's grown, the robot lives!

This bit about G.O.R.T seems irrelevant, but I could be mistaken. In the movie, the name given to Klaatu's companion is made up by earthlings who hardly understand anything about the things of outer space (or extraterrestrial) origin so gracing the presence of those earthlings.

Thank you for suggesting, cinephile.

I've put Upgrade on the list, because in case of danger the chip takes total control of the body-functions and steers Gray Trace' body.

'Good poll, Breu! Since seeing 'The Social Dilemma' and kind of fact-checking it, AI does indeed concern me but only if human beings don't change the ways it's being programmed and used. I guess that means I'd vote for social media AI, although the documentary ultimately pins a lot of the blame on capitalism (or capitalism without enough regulation of social media). I guess my vote would still belong there, though. Anyway, good poll. : )

May I suggest a few edits?

Since science fiction movies began to show fantasies about artificial intelligence in general, many have been critical of it.
What if an artificial "brain" develops too fast or has a corrupted file that acts like a sleeper - with delay! What if your smart robot turns to murder? What if a complete networked structure turns

against you?

There have been many ideas about bad artificial intelligences. Please remember the persons in the movies, affected by these artificial intelligences in their specific situations.

Which of these AIs seem to be the meanest nightmare?

Thanks for swapping out "PS" for "Live-Poll", Breumaster. A lot of poll makers don't bother to do that. (By the way, the hyphen is abnormal, but it can't be bothering anybody.)
