Live Poll: The Horrors of War

Wars can be frightening, thrilling and sadly chaotic; the post-effects of these events can haunt a person or a place for a long time afterwards. When combined, these elements elevate the suspense and tension in a horror film to take it to the next level.

Which of these war (or with war aspects) horror films is your favorite?

*This is my first poll suggestion, so If i am missing any movies that can fit here or am doing something wrong please comment :)

I like the polls idea and you have a great title. It is an interesting subgenre that combines the two larger traditional genres. I have three suggestions:

 • 1) Lower your voting threshold. There are a lot of decent well-seen movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. These films existed pre-internet and before movie goers started logging the movies they saw, as result their vote totals don't reflect their true viewership.

I did a search that includes the two genres with a lower voting threshold and IMDb rating of 5+ and it produced the following results.

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_movie,video&user_rating=5.0,10.0&num_votes=1000,&genres=horror,war&sort=num_votes,desc&view=advanced

IMDb Top 50 War-Horror Movie List
Unfortunetly, the IMDb search is limited by movies not being properly genre tagged. I know for fact there are more movies than this. I suspect there are at least two dozen that feature Nazis and are in the horror genre alone.
 • 2) Seek out articles on the topic using "horror", " war", "movies", and any other related term like "nazi" on a search engine. These articles will usually list a half dozen to two dozen or more titles that are perfect for your answer pool.
 • 3) Your introduction and question are pretty good. I took a stab at it and tweaked it a bit. Take the parts you like from my edited revision.

 • Wars can be frightening, thrilling and sadly chaotic. All of these elements are well-suited to making a great horror film.  Since the early days of motion pictures, the War-Horror subgenre has existed with its first notable example, 'J'accuse!' released in 1919, shortly after World War I.

 • Which of these war (or with war aspects) horror films* is your favorite one? *minimum 2,000 IMDb votes

thank you, i'm gonna update the introduction and find some more films, but should i delete this suggestion and create another one or just leave it here after i update it?

@Danacki No, you don't want to delete this thread, as it has a history of posts, feedback and shows the discussion's progression. You can update the title and the poll header (top original post) by clicking the three dots on the upper right and clicking edit, so there is no need to delete it, only to edit and update it. Plus, it would be very confusing with multiple threads on the same topic, so one poll suggestion thread is always better.

FYI, there are plenty of films to choose from, you just need to double-check them to make sure they belong in answer pool, as sometimes they are genre-tagged incorrectly. IMHO, I think the classic J'accuse! (1919) should be on the list, as it is one of the first Horror-War films and the highest IMDb-rated film in the subgenre.

What do you mean by "or with war aspects"? I think you should fine tune your qualifications for the purpose of the poll to determine which poll answers should or should not be included in the listed answer options.

FYC, If war aspects means movies that have armed conflicts outside an "officially"declared war or feature the military or soldiers with war themes, I think you should say it outright to be clearer.

Which of these war, armed confict, military or soldier horror films is your favorite one?

vs.

Which of these war (or with war aspects) horror films is your favorite one?

These potential and already listed answer options may or may not fit the poll's war-horror scope, depending how broadly or tightly you define it to be. Unless you disagree, I think you should delete #8. Hannibal Rising (2007), as it seemingly falls outside the war scope, #10. Dead Snow (2009) as it is twice listed and #17. La Llorona (2019), as it seemingly falls outside the war scope. You should add Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001 film) and The Enemy (2011) that are clearly war horror movies and consider others. The rest of the possible additions and deletions listed below are not war movies per se, but their inclusion depend on the asked question expanding the scope besides war movies to included armed conficts, military-themed, or soldier-themed horror films too.

Listed Answer Options (possible deletions)

5. Army of the Dead (2021) *undeclared zombie war

7. Jacob's Ladder (I) (1990) *post-Vietnam w/flashbacks

delete #8. Hannibal Rising (2007) *post-war setting

9. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007) *no war with soldier training mission

delete #10. Dead Snow (2009) *post-war setting w/soldiers (double listed)

delete 17. La Llorona (2019) * post-war about warcrimes/war criminal

20. Dead Snow (2009) *post-war setting w/soldiers

21. Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (2014) *post-war setting w/soldiers

27. Predator (1987) unknown war or armed confict w/merc. soldiers on a mission

Not Listed Answer Options (possible additions,)

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001 film) *war

Frankenstein's Army (2013 film) *post-war w/war found footage

Hellboy (2004 film) *single beginning war scene

Army of Darkness (1992 film) *medieval war fantasy movie

Dog Soldiers (2002 film) *no war with but with soldier training mission

Ravenous (1999 film) *war beginning  scene with soldiers throughout the rest of the movie

The Enemy (2011) *war movie

Plus, here some lower voted options, if needed

@Danacki  This option should be once listed, please delete #10.

10. Dead Snow (2009) *post-war setting w/soldiers (double listed)

20. Dead Snow (2009) *post-war setting w/soldiers

Plus, I think you should remove the *minimum 2,000 IMDb votes statement (as J'accuse! (1919) is @ 1,900 votes) and still use it as an unstated general guideline. It served a purpose to get the poll started, but you are at point of refining your answer pool and it hurts more than it helps.

IMHO, I think all that is left to be done is to tweak your question and refine your answer pool by deleting not applicable and weaker answer options with more applicable and stronger answer options. So, the questions and answers match each other.

@urbanemovies Hello, i updated the description of the list for one that i believe fits better after looking at most films on the list. Also, i think that (most) horror films with post-war settings are valid for this list since the effects of war keeps "haunting" places and people after the ending of a war, so it ends up being related to war (though it's not necessarily a war film), i don't know if you agree with that but i'd like to know what you think.

About films about soldiers, such as The Hills Have Eyes 2 or Dog Soldiers, i don't know if they really combine with the theme, in both films, the goup of soldiers are training for a war (obviously), but the war is not the scary thing here, or there's no actual effect on the horror (unless you consider the nucler testings that created the cratures in The Hills Have Eyes 2). I removed Army of the Dead, since it's not about a real war, and i really don't know if Dead Snow fits in all that's been said before (the second one definitively doesn't).

Thank you for your comments, you're helping me a lot here :)

@Danacki I think we are the same page across the board. I think the post-war horror movies w/PTS have flashback scenes, so I am for their inclusion. I also agree the war aspects clause alone with allow for the types of titles that  fit in a slightly wider "war" scope, so the question is perfect as is. I also agree horror movies with soldiers outside of war settings should be excluded. You check the plots on Wikipedia, but these four movies fall outside the scope as you have defined it.

Answer Pool Edits

delete 7. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007) *no war with soldier training mission w/ inbred mutants

delete #14. Dead Snow (2009) *post-war vacation setting w/zombie Nazi soldiers

delete #26. Dog Soldiers (2002) * wargames, soldier training w/werewolves

delete #27. Ravenous (1999) * horror Western cannibal film set outside of war timeframe in remote Western outpost

Text Edits

Please make the following corrections to your text.

1) wrap around the first, second and third sentence to form a single paragraph.

2) replace the comma with a period after chaotic and capitalize the T in the following "The"

3) remove the "a" between "of" and "these"

4) remove the extraneous period after the question mark in your question.

5) (optional) I reworked your last sentence, if you like it better, feel free to use it. Yours is direct, mine is a more explanatory, it comes down to a matter of preference.

6) (optional) I like to bold my questions to make them stand out. You can if you want by placing a before and after the question to turn the bold feature on and off (see below).

Wars can be frightening, thrilling and sadly chaotic. The post-effects of these events can haunt a person or a place for a long time afterwards. When combined, these elements elevate the suspense and tension in a horror film to take it to the next level.

Which of these war (or with war aspects) horror films is your favorite?

I think these changes will wrap things up, unless another poll maker sees an error, or another valid answer options pops up that could be added to the answer pool of twenty-three options (after deletions).

FYC, Primeval (2007) Definitely, a horror film with a warlord and soldiers. I would check the plot summary to make the call for inclusion.

@urbanemovies@Peter_pbn fixed the text errors and added the two last suggestions. Primeval should definitely be in this list since it's set at Burundi's civil war, and Abraham Lincoln: vampire hunter fits perfectly, thanks.

@Danacki I agree. I looked to see if I could find any more unlisted films, but struck out. I am sure there are others or there will be new releases in the war-horror subgenre. If and when this poll goes live, you can add to the answer pool later with a date next to the added option. Plus, twenty-five options is ideal, IMHO. It's not too long or too short, so everyone can find a title that they have seen to vote for. Plus, with ten spots still available (35 total), it allows you to add if you missed an option or add new releases to keep the poll current. Save any other suggestions, I feel good about the readiness of this poll suggestion.

I still see one minor error though. You need to either use a period after "chaotic" or uncapitalize "The" after the semi-colon.

Wars can be frightening, thrilling and sadly chaotic; the post-effects of these events can haunt a person or a place for a long time afterwards.

Congratulations, @Danacki

Nicely done!

Please change "Poll Suggestion" to "Live Poll" in the discussion thread title and change the settings so that it appears under "Praise" now, rather than "Idea."
