Live Polls: The Best Movie in Decade X, Year Zero

Intro:

In 1929 The Academy started to honor the best movies. This is an Oscar view on each decade the Film Academy honoured the best movie from the launch of the Oscars until today. (According to 2022). We start with year ... of each decade.

Which of these best movies is your favorite? (Animated, documentations, short films are left out - just feature films)

Discuss here.

(changes are marked in italic style)
Suggestions:
This list is about the years the academy honored the movies, not the release date of the movies.
n/a - The idea is already set ... let's have a look how successful it would be?
PS:
(Changed the List titles to " The Academy Awards - Years Ending With X" --> In the title of the list, the X is changed to the number)

@cinephile

I'm very delighted by your interest. Would you think it's better to write

"best movie" or (more exactly) "best moving picture"?

I think it is better to write "film" or "movie".

It is a funny coincidence. That 3 of my picks are consecutive years (1940, 1941, 1942), and a fourth is also in the 1940s (1944).

I see your list up there. That's what the idea is about. Sorry, I'm a little tired, I'll better go to sleep now.

All lists are ready for the Oscar season. Don't you think it would be good for the Oscars?

Ready to go live, still open for corrections.

Year 2 ~ The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Year 3 ~ Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Year 4~ Casablanca (1942)

Year 5 ~ Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

Year 6 ~ Spotlight (I) (2015)

Year 7 ~ The Departed (2006)

Year 8 ~ The Last Emperor (1987)

Thank you. You're totally right. Casablanca has jumped one year - like The Hurt Locker, which was made in 2008, but honored in 2010.

I corrected it, 1943 was 'Mrs. Miniver'. There should be no more glitches. But I'm open for necessary corrections. I guess I was a little confused about the two time stamps of 'Casablanca', which drifted apart.

Breumaster. Hasn't Casablanca won in 1944 despite being 1942 film? You included it in "3" list.

Thank you, Cinephile. You're very attentive. But it's like 'The Hurt Locker', which was made in 2008 and honored in 2010. Casablanca was made in 1942, but honored by the academy in 1944.

Please check the date here.

Seems I forgot to state that I pick up the honoring year of the Academy, not the year when they were released or made.

Correction:

In 1929 the first Oscar ceremony took place in Hollywood.

I'm not sure "decade" is the best word to describe this idea. "Years ending in 0" is precise. I invite opinions on what would be the best title and description.

@Peter_pbn

I understand. But "Years Ending in 0" is too less. It should be clear in the title that it is about the Academy Awards. So I would call it: "Academy Awards: Years ending in 0" or "Academy Awards - Years Ending in 0". Another no-go from me would be: "Academy Awards - Year XXX0". ;D

Yet another: "The Oscars in Years Ending with 0"

Ok, now I got it. How about: "The Academy Awards - Years Ending With 0"?

I'll change the lists to give them a better face. I'm still open for even better titles.

Peter, the first ceremony took place in 1927, but it was only about the best actors not the best movies. I can change it to "In 1927 the first Oscar ceremony took place in Hollywood. They awarded the best actors. Later in 1929 The Academy started to also honor the best movies." Would that be ok?

... I changed the lists as an example. You can look at, if it's better now.

The Academy was founded in 1927; the first awards were given in 1929.

Changes it (in all 10 lists):

"In 1929 The Academy started to honor the best movies. This is an Oscar view on each decade the Film Academy honoured the best movie from the launch of the Oscars until today. ..."

To make it more clear and shorter, I've cut some text out and concentrated on the "best movie" part only.

There were two Oscar ceremonies in 1930.

The Broadway Melody won for 1928-29

All Quiet on the Western Front won for 1929-30

Thank you. IMDb says:

Best picture 1930

I didn't know that All Quiet on the Western Front also won. I'll add it with a comment.

Thank you, Peter. Do you know if there were other singularities like that?

Peter, I'm also a little confused, because there is another best picture in 1929:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018578/awards/?ref_=tt_awd

Seems like the academy has one best picture too much, because then there were two best pictures in 1930, but none missing in 1929. One of them seems to be inbetween.

Please correct:

Please notice: 'The Hurt Locker' is an exception. It was made in 2008, but The Academy honoured it only in 2010.

Thank you for sharing, Scott.

I guess the other parts will come live, soon. I just read your "not seen" list. There are several great movies on it, which wrote film history. I saw about 3/4 of them. Most of them I saw were a great experience, especially when watching them first time.

@Breumaster I actually own copes of All About Eve and How Green Was My Valley.  I'm cutting back my library requests so I can watch some of the stuff I own.

Breu, maybe its better to keep this in the idea category until all suggestions have been used. That way we can keep better track on this one.

Look at how BonaFide keeps track of this threads with multiple poll suggestions: Poll Suggestion: Various Game Awards ― Favorite Game of the Year [5/7 Live] | IMDb Community Forums (sprinklr.com) that may be a better way to go.

I must admit that I wasn't sure about. I changed it and also changed the title back to poll suggestion, because there are still nine of them.

Btw: It's a good idea to leave out list #2 temporarily for picking it up later after the Oscars.
