Poll Suggestion: Most Enchanting Laughing Faces and the Most Deadly Looks

These are 4 different suggestions, which are connected through faces of actors and actresses. I got one of the four lists online now to work on. List #1 and list #2 form the suggestions for charming and enchanting faces, list #3 and #4 will form the looks of the same actors that could kill. If an actor or actress doesn't have a "killing look"-pendant to list #1 and list #2, she/he won't appear on one of the other two lists. First it was time for the laughs, now please concentrate on the deadly looks, if you want to suggest. Thank you.

Very interesting idea, Breu. Oh and the common expression in English is "most deadly looks."

Often, a "laugh" refers to the sound of laughter, but you are talking about faces. With the text as it is now voters will probably have to consider the sound.

I think Julia Roberts is probably the actress most famous for her smile and laugh.

I guess you are right, Peter. I wanted to point out, that it is not just a little smile, but more than that. My problem really is that I still have a lack of englisch, which I often directly let translate by chatgpt, to make it more correct. But sometimes I leave it to my own skills. Bad fail. How is it named better? I wanted to state a laughing in their face, but have short space in the title. Is "The Most Enchanting Laugh in the Face" better?

For you I've made up a second "enchanted"-list (list #5), where Julia Roberts is on first and I promise, she stays on first position. Excellent pick so far. I had a time to finde the best image, but think it's really the best. She fully laughs at that image. I take your wishes and try to find images for them. Who else would you like to see laughing - who isn't on the lists? Also the other forum members: Give me a laughter. ;)

Perhaps it would be OK if you just add "face" to the question. Then it wouldn't be about how it sounds, but the way they look.

Which of the ladies has the most enchanting laughing face?

This time, it's the gentlemen's turn

"Fellow Funnybones" in the title seems a little odd, but I'm not sure what to suggest.

Corrected. And I picked the male equal in the title:

 Femme Joyeux --> Homme Joyeux

Maybe that's better.

The Image I used was from the show I mentioned:

But you are right, originally (without text) it came from the Goonies.

I used your image and corrected to 'The Goonies'.

The line was already there in your intro, but the poll link wasn't added:

Back for more? Good call. If you have not made up your mind in the first round of Femmes Dangereuses, here is your chance to take another look.

As for the title, I think "Deadly Looks" is sufficient so it matches the first poll:

Deadly Looks - Femme Dangereuse, Part II

I've changed it now correctly with the link, I've just put the link to "here is your chance to take another look.", because the "here" implements "here." ;)

OK, but the line is now repeated so please remove one:

Back for more? Good call. If you have not made up your mind in the first round of Femmes Dangereuses, here is your chance to take another look. Some faces do not just catch your eye - they hold it, challenge it, and maybe even warn you. Round two brings a fresh lineup of women whose looks can stop you in your tracks and make you wonder if you should be impressed... or careful. Which of these looks best signals you're in trouble and better stop your actions? Please click here for the discussion or here for the slideshow. If you have not made up your mind in the first round of Femme Dangereuse, here is your chance to take another look.

Keri Russell, Lucy Liu, Judi Dench, Alfre Woodard and Frances Fisher don't look very deadly to me in those pictures.

It was actually not easy to find contrasting photos of the same actors for this poll. In the first poll (“Enchanting Laughing Faces”), all the actors also had laughing face expressions. That was the “most intense” material that could be found.

Frances Fisher in Titanic, in the overlapping narration of Rose’s explanation, looks at Jack as if he were an insect that should be crushed immediately.

Women are sometimes said to have their own kind of “deadly” look. As the saying goes: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” These can be very cold, dismissive expressions as well. The man is then, in a social sense, finished with her.

It was genuinely difficult to compile these images.

Judi Dench: Look at her eyes and her mouth in combination. That tells to better not step too far.

Lucy Liu: Better?

It’s worth being careful with broad cultural generalizations about emotional expression, since within any culture there is a wide range of how people show or suppress feelings.

In Kill Bill, Lucy Liu’s character O-Ren Ishii has a look that can be read as extremely cold and threatening in that scene - almost as if she is thinking, “I’m about to kill you.” It’s the kind of expression that relies on subtle cues rather than exaggerated facial movement, and it only works if the viewer knows how to interpret it. Anyway I changed the image.

Keri Russell and Alfre Woodard were the most difficult cases. It was genuinely hard to find any reasonably threatening expressions for the two of them

They could be removed and replaced with other examples instead. However, in that case, they would not be carried over into another poll pairing.

Goldie Hawn already had her chance. I'll take it for Meryl Streep. Noomi Rapace is also on the list, now.

Meryl Streep is in the first Deadly Looks poll for Devil Wears Prada, if you think an actor can only be in one poll.

If it's difficult to compile a good list, I think it makes sense to leave space for suggestions.

@Peter_pbn

That’s right, Peter. I've swiped Streep from the second list. For me, the appeal was mainly in seeing where the positive peak is and, in comparison, where the negative peak of the same actress would be. Since it apparently “fails” because some actresses simply can’t really look properly evil, the approach ends up breaking the concept. So I’m curious to hear your suggestions. Still, I do think that Judi Dench in that picture looks like she’s about to bite someone.

I also skipped Lucy Liu, because I think the Kill Bill image was better. It best showed her sleeping fury. But I understand that it is often not comprehensible for people from Europe and America to see the fine nuances in Asian eyes. Often it's just a a little wrinkle in the outer corner of the eye which reveals fury. Or when the eyelids tense up, slightly narrowing the eye.

You all can suggest. After all, it's still 33 images. If there are no further suggestions, then feel free to release it. I'll work on the second gentlemen's list tomorrow..

I must also admit that I had more fear about some other actresses whose images wouldn't fit the test.

Whoopi Goldberg looks more resignated rather than fury.

Anna Faris was tough to search for a fitting image. The image she is on now, she was more like frightened, scared - which totally makes sense in a movie called 'Scary Movie 3'.

And the image of Audrey Hepburn wasn't fury. The movie is called 'charade'. I remember: this was the moment when her character Regina Lampert had a flash of insight. She got the twist in that moment, if I remember correctly. Well, it was a long time ago I saw it, so I might be wrong. I took it, because her face-expression comes close to how someone looks when he/she enrages.

@Breumaster I searched for some times for:

Tippi Hedren,

Jenny Agutter (finally I found one),

Naomie Watts,

Lily Tomlin,

(astoundingly hard to find:) Glenn Close,

Gillian Anderson,

Kirsten Dunst,

Naomie Harris,

Kathy Bates,

(surprisingly hard to find:) Helena Bonham Carter,

Francess Fisher (Happily, I finally found that image from the scene where Rose explained how her mother looked at Jack - that makes all sense one could think of - look at her eyes - they say: "Kill this bug!),

Nicole Kidman (a true woman of "close to no fury"),

Tilda Swinton,

Romy Schneider
