cinephile,

Interesting poll. I've considered suggesting a poll about television series based on radio plays, but never contemplated a similar poll for films.

My vote: A Prairie Home Companion (2006)
This is a fictional film about a radio show that is a homage to old time radio shows. Robert Altman is probably the only director who could have pulled off this film.

So not really a radio play. Perhaps the poll title should just say "Radio Shows".

Peter,

I agreed. The Prairie Home Companion definitely would be considered a radio play. However, there are radio plays within the show.

I had the pleasure of meeting Garrison Keillor before the "The Prairie Home Companion" started. Keillor was the morning drive time host at the time. I was volunteering during pledge drive answering telephones.

Peter, Dan

How does the fact that there are references to radio shows or radio play prohibit it to be a radio play?

Anyway, "Radio Show" is too broad.

Also, I don't think that I'm gonna do a poll for TV series, I know nothing about TV series and even less about Radio Play because all those Radio Plays are in English. Radio can't really be dubbed for the international public so it was never aired where I live.

A Prairie Home Companion just isn't a radio play, but a radio show. You can look it up.

You say "Radio Shows" is too broad, but your question refers to "films based on a show aired on the radio". Your title ought to match the question.

I would remove both War of the Worlds films since they are ultimately based on H.G. Well’s classic Novel, “The War Of The Worlds”. Even the radio play was based on the book.

Try

“Topper”

“Topper Returns”

“The Day of the Triffids” (Changed to “Invasion of the Triffids”

“Amos ‘n’ Andy”

“The Great Gildersleeve”

“Fibber McGee and Molly”

“Have Gun, Will Travel” (yes, it was a radio show first before a movie and tv series).

Removed both War of the Worlds

I think that Topper and Topper Returns are based on a book by Thorne Smith.

The Day of the Triffids is based on a 1951 book

Check and Double Check  doesn't meet the 5000+ votes criteria same for The Great Gildersleeve, Fibber McGee, and Molly and Have Gun, Will Travel

PS: I didn't spend too much time on the poorly made Wikipedia page.

The Case of the Lucky Legs (1935), with Warren William and Genevieve Tobin as Della Street.
The Case of the Velvet Claws (1936), with Warren William and Claire Dodd as Della Street Mason.

FYC:

Festen (1998) was inspired by a radio interview with a man who told a story about himself and his family.

The best part is that it was later discovered that the man had made up the story.

Discovered this too late and should've definitely suggested Mr. Arkadin (1955), which was based on a radio play Orson Wells previously did, as detailed in the trivia item.

A very underrated and superb film, even though it has no definite version.
