Poll Suggestion: Disney's Nine Old Men

Disney's Nine Old Men were a group of Walt Disney Productions' core animators, who worked at the studio from the 1920s to the 1980s. Some of the Nine Old Men also worked as directors, creating some of Disney's most popular animated movies. All nine members of the group were acknowledged as Disney Legends in 1989 and all would receive the Winsor McCay Award for their lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation.

Please add the discussion link.

The biographies are way too long, please try to shorten them.

@Jessica thank you for your feedback, I totally agree, I asked chatgpt to rewrite in one paragraph their bios, focusing on their work/titles.

@mariojacobs

I wondered how long it takes until someone tells you. I could have done, too. But had no time. I also think it looks better. It's a little off-putting (hope that's the right wording) to see so much text. Even though it seems interesting, some would avoid taking it.

@mariojacobs  I concur with Breu's hahahahahas, lol.

Here, I'll do one. I might be able to do more over the next few days but for now, I'll revise #1 to shorten the sentences:

Wolfgang Reitherman’s Disney work spans key animated classics. As an animator he contributed major character animation to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty. As director or supervising director, he led The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, shaping much of Disney's animation from the late Golden Age through the 1970s in one long, influential run.

'Hope that helps. I'll check back as soon as I can and if the others still need it, I can prune those a bit, as well.

I looked up a few things from the descriptions, and there seem to be inaccuracies. Chatbots are easily confused.

For example, Milt Kahl didn't specifically animate characters like Stromboli, Captain Hook or Cruella de Vil.

This is way too inside baseball as there is way too much overlap with the animated projects being worked on by multiple animators in this poll.

Hi Mario, I really like this idea.

I suggest one small edit to the intro:

Disney's Nine Old Men was a group of Walt Disney Productions' core animators...

(British English generally prefers "were," while American English prefers "was" and IMDb uses American English. The intro is quite good, by the way.)

@mariojacobs,

These men didn't just animate; they refined the 12 Principles of Animation and created the "Disney Style" that defined the Golden and Silver ages of the studio.

Because this group formed the backbone of the studio's creative leadership from the late 1930s until the late 1970s, they all worked together on many of Disney's most iconic features.

The films where all nine were credited as animators or supervisors include:

  • Pinocchio (1940)

  • Bambi (1942)

  • Cinderella (1950)

  • Alice in Wonderland (1951)

  • Peter Pan (1953)

  • Lady and the Tramp (1955)

  • Sleeping Beauty (1959)

  • One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)

You may wish to focus on why each of these animators are unique:

  • Les Clark (The longest-tenured; joined in 1927)
  • Marc Davis (The master of character design and female leads)
  • Ollie Johnston (The specialist in emotion and "acting")
  • Milt Kahl (The "draftsman's draftsman"; known for complex anatomy)
  • Ward Kimball (The eccentric; specialized in comedy and zany motion)
  • Eric Larson (The mentor; known for sincerity and the "soul" of characters)
  • John Lounsbery (The master of loose, energetic movement)
  • Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman (The action specialist; later became a key director)
  • Frank Thomas (The genius of subtle personality and chemistry)

Regarding "longest-tenured": Les Clark is said to have worked for Disney 1927-1975. Eric Larson, 1933-1986.

@dan_dassow:

After I pointed out that the previous ChatGPT-driven bios were incorrect, it seems to me that you then posted a reply driven by chatbot with claims that you did not check. I am getting a bit tired of factchecking AI slop that people can't bother to look up themselves.

as a matter of fact, it is not a MUST to write any kind of extra information in a peoples poll. It c

an be nice, but it is not necessary.

I am actually thinking of leaving it empty, who wants more information can go check the imdb mini bio site.

This is a good example of a peoples sort of poll.
