Live Poll: World Peace Day: Give Peace a Chance

I get your point, but what is the alternative to quietly sit by and doing nothing. By allowing those in power under the status quo to promote violent harm and social injustice. "Nonviolent resistance (NVR or nonviolent action) is the practice of achieving goals such as social change through symbolic protests, civil disobedience, economic or political noncooperation, satyagraha, or other methods, while being nonviolent. This type of action highlights the desires of an individual or group that feels that something needs to change to improve the current condition of the resisting person or group." Given all the options, this seems the most peaceful of all and far better than doing nothing to solve the world's problems.

I would guess that the purpose of the day to have a discussion about peace and steps that can be taken to move us closer to that ideal.. Thanks, I was aware of The dark side of Nelson Mandela and his Umkhonto we Sizwe connection. That portion of his early life was covered fairly in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), I would think a fair amount of pacifist have first hand experience with the horrors of war and blood on their hands. Like others, I think it is fair to credit him for his actions and opinions he held most of life.

None of these people were saints.

i like this version too, I would still like to add 10-13 more noteworthy peace activists, especially those with a well-known movie connection. It seems like almost every one needs an image and/or profile though. Currently, under consideration are William Randal Cremer, Bertha von Suttner, Fridtjof Nansen, Jane Addams, Sir Norman Angell,  Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan, Rigoberta Menchú, Liu Xiaobo, Carl von Ossietzky and various U.S. Nobel Peace Prize Presidents.. Plus, any others that had might belong because their efforts were world-changing or had the potential to be world-changing. Ideally, I would like to get a good mix of reformers and causes. Suggestions of individual peace activists from 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century are appreciated.

Oh, yeah, that just reminded me that I didn't mention that Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for all of his work post-Presidency.  During his Presidency, he also was most instrumental in the critical peace pact between Israel and Egypt and the Nobel Peace Prizes that those nations' leaders won at the time. Apparently, he's been on the short list for the Nobel more often than any other living person.

Can I throw some chips in for the removal of Carnegie? I'm from Pittsburgh, where he lived, and while his massive amounts of money did a lot of good, he got that money through cruel means: using child labor even when it was widely considered to be immoral, union busting (including through violent means), not having safety standards at his steel mills, severely under-paying and over-working his workers, who were routinely injured, and much more, as if that isn't enough. 

Pittsburgh has a cultural and educational establishments, such as great museums and a public library system second to none, and they all have his name but they don't, of course, carry the names of the hundreds of thousands of people that built his wealth on their backs.

I also had considered Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Father Daniel Berrigan, and Helen Prejean. Only Daniel Berrigan (1921–2016) – prominent American anti-Vietnam war protester, poet, author, anti-nuke and war and Jimmy Carter (born 1924) – American negotiator and former US President, organizer, international conflict resolution were listed on Wikipedia's list of peace activists.

I used this listing or a Nobel peace prize to help validate the poll options. The bar is pretty high requiring a word-changing impact via peaceful pursuits or a significant lifetime contribution to the cause of peace. Plus, any unique pacifists that could not be labeled garden-variety or are uniquely inspirational. I am still considering adding some more, but time ran out on this one and adding each real-person option is pretty time-intensive. Thanks for your help, suggestions and support.

'Great minds think alike, lol: I was thinking of the man in Beijing who stood in front of the tanks but I quickly and unthoughtfully (and rather subconsciously) just dismissed the idea because no one outside of the vaulted leaders in China knows his identity. He, more than almost any I can think of, represents the efforts of peaceful change. 

Tank Man
I decide against including him in the end, since  1) it would be speculative to attribute his motivations or political leanings 2) He did it the morning after the Chinese military suppressed the protest and as the tanks were leaving Tiananmen Square. So, it would be hard to say he did it protect the students. 3) He is famous because his act was caught on camera, others acted similarly but didn't get the fame. "Shao Jiang, who was a student leader, said: 'I witnessed a lot of the people standing up, blocking the tanks.' Tank Man is unique in that he is the only one who was photographed and recorded on video."

i don't recall Commander-in-Chief being part of Al Gore's job description in 1999.  Plus, the Norwegian Nobel Committee felt compelled to award him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 'for (his) efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". Essentially, using nonviolence as a means to achieve political and social change in the world.

The closest the President of the United States can come to firing the Vice President of the United States is declining to name him or her as a running mate, so there should in theory be almost nothing to stop the VP from voicing dissent when the chief executive would be unable to serve anymore terms of office. I'd admit, however, that I'm too cynical believe that any person in modern times would actually do that, yet that is kind of the point.

Al Gore. Bill Clinton. Jamie Shay. Madeleine Albright. James Rubin. Tony Blair. And many more. A thirteen-year-old me (in 1999) shouldn't have known these names. But I knew them, because all they did was spread hate and war and lies, for reasons that were unknown to me back then.
However, I apologize - it wasn't my intention to attack you personally. After all, you've added a person who did receive a Nobel Peace Prize, whether I like it or not. And for that, you don't deserve any blame.
