LIVE POLL: When the Villain is More Interesting Than the Hero

In these movies, the villain and the hero share equal screen time* (even a little more for the hero) and yet the villain is the more interesting character: more colorful, more intense or more capable to elicit strong feelings from the audience.

(*no movies where the protagonist is a bad guy or where the villain is some monstrous creature)

@ElMo,

For your consideration:

Sleeping Beauty (1959) or many other versions of the Sleeping Beauty story.

Maleficent appears to be a more developed and interesting character than the heroine, Princess Aurora,

and hero Prince Phillip.

Thanks, I knew I was missing some Disney classics. Your suggestion is so on point I will put it high on the list.

@ElMo,

Thank you for adding Sleeping Beauty (1959).

I debated whether to suggest Miss Gulch / The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz (1939). I came to the conclusion that Dorothy Gale and the other characters are overall more interesting then The Wicked Witch of the West.

I'm pondering whether Megamind from Megamind (2010) would qualify for your poll.

Good call, I'll probably add them all.

Since there's already one Joker, shouldn't we focus on Batman Returns, wasn't The Penguin more interesting in a way?

By the way, you're absolutely right about your martial art film suggestions, it's just that these two villains don't get enough screen time to consider that they make the film worth to watch. Just saw (and reviewed) Karate Tiger recently and the film's only redeeming quality is that scene with Van Damme in a white suite kicking the man's torso by jumping on a man's leg.

Thanks for sharing I knew such idea had to be made into a poll some time

I just wanted to focus on movies where the hero and the bad guy  have almost equal screentime, actually I could use some movies on that list

I disagree though about Hans Gruber being more interesting than John McClane, both made the film.

I would've thought Heat and Arlington Rd would make this list
