Live Poll: The Big Repentance: Corrupt Cops

Intro:

Police is necessary for any healthy society. Without our upright officers, we would stick in chaos and maybe civilisation would fall apart. So please give the officers in your neighbourhood respect and a friendly smile!

In some movies criminal cops are the subject. They steal, blackmail other criminals, do drugs or prostitution, they keep money for shutting up and/or looking away or simply have their fun to beat someone and many other bad deeds. They are not trustworthy, whether for society nor criminals. In one word: Corruption! In some of these films the bad officer repents his deeds by his own inner persuation. These are golden changers, mostly everybody has some sympathy for. In other movies the decision to stop his (their) false game is made by upright colleagues or even other criminals.

(Spoiler bars attached to avoid spoiling the movie for you.)

Which of these movies about repenting corrupt cops or upright police colleagues, or criminals who stop the bad, but uniformed guys is your favorite?

Report the bad guys here.

Suggestions:

It's all said in the intro and the examples. I'd say no movie rated lower than 6.5.

The upright coleague has to stop or try to stop the bad guy/gal (officer) in the movie. Or:

The corrupt cop repents on his/her own inner persuation. Or:

A criminal stops the corrupt cop in any way (tricking, shooting, etc.).

Please add a little text to each suggestion that tells how the corrupt cop was stopped and by whom. And the circumstances.

It's very exhausting to figure it out from movies I haven't seen or just don't remember proper. Thank you.

Thank you, Mario. Super picks. I can write a text for Duffy's stop and for the brave Serpico.

Could you write me a text for the option about Dudley Smith? I saw it long ago and don't remember proper.

@Breumaster

He is a corrupt police captain serving in the L.A.P.D. who, along with his unit of corrupt cops, are responsible for arresting Mickey Cohen and subsequently taking over his heroin empire. Consequently, Dudley Smith seeks to establish himself as the most powerful figure of both organized crime and law enforcement in Los Angeles by eliminating anyone who gets in his way.

Thank you. The drama of Captain Cluskey and Michael Corleone is perfect. But abut Dudley Smith: You didn't tell how he ended and who stopped him and how or why. Please tell, I still don't remember. That's the flaw when someone watches a few hundred movies each year. Some vanish from mind, when there are - maybe not better, but - more fitting other movies. Sometimes it's a matter of taste what stucks in mind, while other movies might even have been better all-in-all. ;)

Please tell further about Dudley Smith and his end.

I do not remember the details either, perhaps wikipedia can help

Vincennes later confronts Smith with evidence that Meeks and Stensland worked together under Smith's command a decade earlier, and dropped an investigation on Patchett, who had Hudgens photographing businessmen with prostitutes in a blackmail scam. Smith shoots Vincennes, who dies after murmuring "Rollo Tomasi".

The next day, Exley's suspicions are aroused when Smith asks him who "Rollo Tomasi" is. While interrogating Hudgens, Smith arranges for White to see photos of Lynn having sex with Exley, which sends an enraged White to find him. At the police station, White and Exley fight, but stop when both realize that Smith is corrupt. They deduce that Stensland killed Meeks over the stolen heroin, and that the Nite Owl killings were to allow Smith to kill Stensland. Smith's men framed the three African-Americans for the Nite Owl murders with planted evidence. Exley and White interrogate Loew and learn that Smith and Patchett (aided by Hudgens' blackmail photos) have been taking over Cohen's criminal empire, and that the killings were because of Smith tying up loose ends. They later find Patchett and Hudgens murdered.

Smith lures Exley and White into an ambush. After the pair kill Smith's hitmen in a gunfight, White and Smith wound each other. As Exley holds Smith at gunpoint, Smith assures him that he can "explain" everything to the arriving police and Exley will be promoted. Smith walks away toward the newly gathered squad cars, but Exley shoots him in the back, killing him.

At the police station, Exley explains what he, Vincennes and White learned about Smith's corruption. The LAPD decides to protect their image by saying Smith died a hero in the shootout, while awarding Exley a second medal for bravery.

Thank you for explaining. It would be a little more easy for me, if there was a text in the suggestion that tells how the corrupt cop was stopped. Thank you anyway. :)

I enhanced the "suggestions: area". Please tell about how and by whom the officer's wrong game ended. Please also put some explaining lines of the cirumstances to it, so it is more easy for me to figure out the option you suggested.

There are just 13 options, but it's a lot to read, if people got time, so I would declare it as ready - except there are instanly some more of these guys ... or corrections.

Idon't know how you say it in the U.S.

(in Germany it isn't celebrated so widely, but in rural areas there is an "Erntedankfest")

Let me try:

Happy Thanks Giving! :D
