Wow, that will be a hard one, to be honest. One one hand I'm a film fan with almost no boundaries as to what that means (big budget, low budget, no budget, b movies, cult favorites, oddities, commercials and music videos - I value everything). On the other hand, it's really hard to pick just one movie. Although... One of my earliest memories about films is from when I was two years old. I can trace quite a few movies as seen approximately in 1993-1994, but only one has a more or less concrete date: my parents taped The Terminator (1984) from a TV showing which was on 3rd or 4th of May of 1994 and the next day I first saw it when my parents were re-watching it and cutting away the commercials. It positively blew me away then and it still amazes me now. I never get bored of it even after spending like half-a-year accounting the most accurate bodycount of the movie and titular antagonist's screentime (I've pretty much seen this movie frame-by-frame a few times). Which turned out to be 26 minutes and 8 seconds, of which only 16 minutes are of first-billed Arnold Schwarzenegger. That's some movie magic for you: one of cinema's most memorable characters is only there for less then 20 minutes but you feel his presence throughout the movie constantly, as well as a really unexpected and stylish kind of existential dread.

A good option, it is very interesting the forum you shared shows that it is a very well done job. Interestingly, one day after that you would see this movie for the first time, it was the day of my birth (May 5, 1994) added.

I really can't answer this question. But I'll throw out El Mariachi (1992) into the mix which was (most likely) the first subtitled foreign language film I've ever seen. Rented it when I was in the army.

Always loved going to the movies growing up. But this opened my eyes to other things than mainstream Hollywood and dubbed Japanese monster movies.

Interesting option, he added. I also loved growing up going to the movies.

One of the first movies that made a deep impression to me was Taxi Driver (1976).

As far back as I can remember, I always loved movies, I would say that IMDb awoke my passion for movies not a movie in particular... maybe there's a film that made me love movies with a little extra something of dedication but right now the only name that springs to my mind is IMDb.

If it does not bother you, I have nominated your option in my survey, I found it very interesting, but if you remember the movie with which I love the movies more than any other, I will have no problem changing it.

It doesn't bother me at all, I wish I could get the right title but I can't think of one movie that "started'em all"

Joe and ElM,

I suspect that ElM's contribution could well be the top choice if/when this poll goes live:
"IMDb awoke my passion for movies" ElMaruecan82 pick.

I think you should choose for a different question. The chance is very small that somebody else has exactly the same movie as the movie that has awoken the passion for movies.
Maybe something like: Who’s pick is the most interesting? Or, which passion do you share the most?
And maybe you can add a few lines at each pick why we choose for this movie.

Hoekkie, in fact I had already thought but I had no idea how to complete the question, thanks for the help.

I have changed the question should check it to see if it seems right now, in terms of adding a line to each pick is a good idea but I think there will be several who choose their movies without specifying much and some lines would be repetitive, I appreciate the idea but do not, sorry.

I think you should allow all the contributors to add a few lines with their pick. You’ve a few already with a description. It’s makes the poll more interesting with personal information.
My lines would be:
Mulholland Drive fascinated me. I loved the style and the mystery and I wanted to understand the movie. I started reading about David Lynch, Eraserhead, Lost Highway, etcetera. And I guess since then I never stopped reading, searching and watching movies..

Hi Hoekkie, after all I ended up adding lines to the choises (at least those who left little comments about their options) thank you.

Nice poll idea. This suggestion made me think very hard. When I was young I loved a couple of films very much, but at that time I didn't had passion for movies in general. It's really hard to say when it started. My pick is Mulholland Drive (2001). That movie fascinated me. I loved the style and the mystery and I wanted to understand the movie. After that I started reading about David Lynch, Eraserhead, etc., and I guess since then I never stopped reading, searching and watching movies.

Additional :), it's very nice for me to think about those moments when I started watching movies more personally and that's why I decided to made this poll.

Do you have any line about your experience with this movie? as I knew it maybe, or how it was that it became the movie that "started it all"

I love this idea. I had been thinking about doing something like this for a while but I couldn't quite frame it, which you've done very well. Oh, this makes me think of so many of those first great movies that I saw at the right age to set my enthusiasm on fire, wow. It makes me very nostalgic and renews my appreciation for cinema and some specific films, as well. I'm going to have to deliberate a bit before I choose one but bravo for doing this.

I was very lucky to see, when I was still a young teenager, to some very good films because my much older brother was living at home while in law school and would rent movies that otherwise I would have never even heard of at such a young age. I remember a lot of them (Brazil, Casablanca, Blue Velvet) awaking an appreciation in me and opening up a whole new world to me -- and opening up a whole new way of seeing the world, too. The one that seems to keep coming back to me when I think of this poll, though, is 'My Dinner with Andre' so I'll go with that one. I think maybe I was younger when I saw that or something because it's the one that most makes me remember something changing for me.

I remember that Shrek was one of the first movies I saw in the cinema as a child, since then I was always with my mother to watch animated movies and nowadays my passion for animated films is still alive, but without a doubt Shrek was the movie that I wake up my love to movies.

Well, I've loved movies for as long as I can remember, but for a long time (when I was a kid) I was just being a fan of a franchise, like Pooh or Disney Princess.  After a while I became a movie lover in general, watching all sorts and judging them.  But I'll just say the movie that started all the "movie buff"-ness for me was... my first episode of Mystery Science Theater!  :D  I became fascinated by it because I'd never seen anything like that before; never seen such a bad movie!  It (along with RiffTrax) also made me look at movies differently, not just blindly enjoying any old thing, but picking up on every detail and critiquing it carefully, searching for only quality.  Don't know if it qualifies because it was a T.V. show, but it did feature full length movies.  Thanks!  Awesome idea!

Oh yes, I find no reason not to accept your choice since it is a television program that is directly related to the movies and also seems to me a very interesting option. Added

Hi Joe! :D
I'd pick 'The Jungle Book' (1967)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061852
I guess everyone of my age knows the song "Bare Necessities"
It had a great impact in my homeland. Most people love it.

Line for use:

"It was a re-release in our home city.  It was my first time visiting a cinema ever at the age of 4 or 5. I don't know the exact age proper anymore. The movie was for an audience 6+ years of age. So my father had to smuggle me into the cinema. But I still know he told me to not tell anyone I'm younger. So I shouted at the box office (in German words): I'M 6 YEARS OLD, OK? The grown ups had a good laugh and the lady on the box office agreed. The movie enlighted my heart for cinema"
