Isn't it spelled more like "elevensies?"  You list it as elvenses, like it is for the elves (instead of around eleven o'clock).

Yes, sorry, my mistake. Should be "Elevenses".

Thanks! Thought it was a nice idea, since it's really in the Hobbit spirit. ;)

I corrected the intro.

@Vandurath,

My vote:

Second Breakfast (9:00 AM)
The famous heavier morning feast with eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, or French toast.

Nice choice! And I'm pretty sure that Second Breakfast will have the most votes, since that is the best known meal because of Pippin's quote in the first movie.

@Vandurath ,

In honor of Hobbit Day, a recipe suitable for Second Breakfast.

Hobbit Stuffed French Toast

Elevate your Second Breakfast with this decadent, savory-sweet creation fit for a Baggins or a Took. Thick slices of country bread are stuffed with a rich, savory filling of maple-infused cream cheese, crispy bacon, and savory breakfast sausage, then dipped in spiced custard and pan-fried to golden perfection.

Prep & Cook Time

  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Cook time: 15 minutes
  • Servings: 4 hungry hobbits

Ingredients

  • The Bread: 8 thick slices of sturdy brioche, challah, or traditional country white bread
  • The Meat: 6 strips of thick-cut bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled; 4 breakfast sausage links, cooked and crumbled
  • The Stuffing: 4 oz cream cheese (softened), 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • The Custard: 3 large eggs, 3/4 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, a pinch of salt
  • The Finish: Butter for the pan, plus extra butter and genuine maple syrup for serving

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, maple syrup, and black pepper together until smooth. Fold in the crumbled crispy bacon and sausage pieces.
  2. Stuff the Bread: Lay out the bread slices. Spread a generous, even layer of the bacon-sausage cream cheese mixture onto 4 of the slices. Top them with the remaining 4 slices to form four hefty stuffed sandwiches. Gently press down so they hold together.
  3. Whisk the Custard: In a wide, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Heat the Griddle: Melt a tablespoon of butter on a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Soak and Sear: Dip each stuffed sandwich quickly into the custard mixture, allowing each side to absorb the liquid for about 10–15 seconds without letting the bread fall apart.
  6. Cook to Golden Perfection: Place the stuffed slices onto the hot griddle. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the exterior is deeply golden brown and crispy, and the cheese filling inside is warm and melty.
  7. Serve: Plate immediately. Top with a pat of butter and a generous, heavy pour of maple syrup.

I'm posting this recipe a day early to allow fellow Hobbits to shop for the ingredients.

On this day, September 2, 1973, J.R.R Tolkien passed away at the age of 81.

Rest in peace and thank you for everything, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and especially The Silmarillion.
