Perseverance is one of the most admirable traits a person can have and it’s quite common in fiction to have a protagonist who deals with adversity at every turn. These characters might watch the people they love die, while facing hurdle after hurdle. The average person would cut their losses and give up. Rocky and Inigo. Also Robert Angier from the Prestige also is a good candidate as he goes to extremes in order to become a better magician than Alfred Borden, even losing his own humanity along the way.

I love this idea! I started a similar one once but I think I forgot about it. I love your list, too: Atticus Finch is my favorite character from the list but Andy DuFresne probably most inspires me not to give up.

Lol, no the other poll had good guys as well, it had 35 entries, I had to remove:

John McClane, Rocky, Inigo Montoya, Bryan Mills (who were in Paok's list)

and then Judah Ben-Hur, Maximus
Mattie Ross from "True Grit"
Marlin from "Finding Nemo"
Andrew from "Whiplash"
Sean Astin's Sam from "LOTR" and "Rudy"

Quite a bloodbath lol, I would have loved to see these characters in Paok's list, maybe he can make a two-parter, one about Top 250 characters and a second one. I really think Marlin or Luke Jackson or the Ikiru hero exemplify the "never giving up" trope.

My vote for the most persistent cinematic character is for Demian Slade  as Johnny Gasparini, the psychotic paperboy in Better Off Dead (1985). He shows up at least a half dozen times throughout the movie looking to collect his two dollars from the main character in the most unlikeliest of locations saying "Two dollars. I want my two dollars!"

You've gotten it mixed up. Lane Myer isn't the persistent one, its Johnny Gasparini, the psychotic paperboy who is persistent in Better Off Dead (1985). Watch the video.

Same comment than before, I got strong "heroic" vibes from Paok's initial suggestion, I think it would be better if our polls were complementary rather than overlapping, Blake, while not a bad guy, is more on the antiheroic side and I would love to have it in my list, just like the Paperboy.

I would even suggest Paok to have "Good Characters" in the title :) so we make this poll a two-parter.

I think it is a good idea to split these polls, since there seems to be more than enough characters to justify both. I posted some on these on both. But. maybe varying the questions to focus on the type of persistence rather than the type of person, Good vs. Bad is a better way to go.

Maybe, Paok-Kilkis' question should be: Which of these persistent character's drive in never quitting do you find the most inspirational?

Correction: Which of these persistent character's would you least like to have in pursuit of you?

I also nominate Daniel Eugene "Rudy" Ruettiger from the movie, Rudy (1993) for his persistence in pursuing his dream to play football for Notre Dame. This true story about his relentless pursuit, both on the field and academically is most inspirational. Despite being undersized at 5'6" and 165 pounds, plus being dyslexic. and having marginal high school grades he both played for and graduated from Notre Dame, a top-ranked school both in football and academics.

Like I already said, I really like Urb's idea and I also think that maybe it would be cool to have them go live together. I like thematically consistent polls every now and then. These two fit so well together.
