Actors Considered to Play Willy Wonka

The role of Willy Wonka in the original 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is one which solidified Gene Wilder's place in cinematic history. As difficult as it is to imagine anyone else in the part, it's also well known that Roald Dahl himself disapproved of his casting and that he was nowhere near the first choice. A host of other (mostly British) performers were considered. Who, in this alternate universe, do you think would have had the right combination of whimsy, cynicism and musical talent to pull off such a one-of-a-kind character?

@dan_dassow 😀

Why is there always "After voting, please discuss here."

Why not discuss Before voting??

@ACT_1 and @JackSlater4 ,

@dan_dassow 😀

Why is there always "After voting, please discuss here."

Why not discuss Before voting??

.

The IMDb editors suggested this form for the discussion link to encourage people to vote in the poll before discussing the poll. Although this is the preferred form for the discussion link, it is more important to have a properly functioning discussion link.

The IMDb editors suggested this form for the discussion link
to encourage people to vote in the poll before discussing the poll.

- - -

And after they Vote and reading the discussion
They might want to change their Vote??

You could ask the IMDb editors to change this??
Maybe they could Vote for the change.

Someone could start a new thread on This subject??
Someone that does Polls!!

I do not

OR Just add  please discuss here.

@ACT_1 ,

This was only a suggested format. It is not required even though it may be preferred.

As you should have seen, many authors use their own individual formats for the discussion link including the very simple: Please discuss here.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Gene Wilder ... Willy Wonka

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067992/trivia/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067992/trivia/?item=tr0732204

Several actors were offered the role of Wonka before Gene Wilder:

Joel Grey was first choice for the role of Willy Wonka,
but was not considered physically imposing enough.

Roald Dahl's original choice to play Willy Wonka was Spike Milligan.

Peter Sellers was desperate to play the role,  and even begged Dahl for approval.

The role was offered to Ron Moody, who declined it.

Jon Pertwee had to turn down the role
because he was in the tight schedule of Doctor Who (1963) at the time.

Sidney James and Kenneth Williams showed interest in the role.

Frankie Howerd was offered the role,

but scheduling conflicts with Up Pompeii (1971) and

The Chastity Belt (1972) forced him to turn down the role.

Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, and Michael Crawford were also considered for the role.

All six performing members of Monty Python - Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin -

had expressed great interest in playing the role, but they were deemed not big enough names for an international audience.

Cleese, Idle, and Palin were considered for the same role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

Eric Idle recorded the audio version of the book.
