I don't know if I'm doing this correctly, but this link currently shows 9,615,436 titles.

Meanwhile, the official statistics page currently shows 8,744,296 titles (as of Dec. 2021).

If it's indeed true that there are currently 9,615,436 titles, and if it's also true that there were 9,125,000 titles back in Oct. 2018, then IMDb probably still has a couple years before hitting the 10M mark.

I realize the stats page is dated Dec. 2021. Is this as simple as there have been 900K new titles added in the past three months? If not, why the discrepancy in the numbers?

I suspect that as titled are cleared (fake titles submitted, duplicates merged/removed, etc.), those numbers become available again and get used by a new title.

You think that it would cause discrepancies if they were to re-use a previously used title number?  What kind of discrepancies would it cause?  The other alternative would be to do some skipping and come back later to use the ones that got skipped.  But that wouldn't make any sense.

The reason I pointed it out is because you can find examples of titles that are newer (and got added later) than older titles but have lower numbers than those older titles.

For example, "The Batman (2022)" is tt1877830 while "Avengers: End Game (2019) is tt4154796.  Either 1877830 was skipped the first time around and finally filled in, or it was used for another title that got purged for some reason.  Possibly a fake submission, or a project that didn't pan out, etc.

Also, to ignore or dismiss the idea of old numbers being reused would in itself create a discrepancy.  In your search result, there are under 9.7M results.  Yet, there is a title tt9900000.  How could that exist if the highest possible number is under 9.7M?

I think we are all talking past each other, about slightly different topics.

Here is the issue I am focused on.

This link currently shows 9,616,128 titles (it has gone up by several hundred titles in just the last three hours).

I don't see any "blank" titles in there. (What would a "blank" title even look like in these results, and how could they be located?)

Despite the links above showing 9.6M titles, the official statistics page currently shows only 8.7M titles (as of Dec. 2021).

My question is, why the discrepancy between 8.7M in Dec. 2021 and 9.6M in March 2022? Have there really been 0.9M titles added to the database in the past three months? Or is there some other reason for that discrepancy?

I don't think my questions have anything to do with whether numbers within the sequence have been skipped, reused, etc. That is a totally different topic, and it would not answer my question.

(Sorry for posting my question in this thread; at first I didn't realize that this thread was about the total numbers available in the sequence; I mistakenly assumed the thread was about the actual number of titles listed in the database.)

I didn't say anything about "blank" titles.  I've only referred to ones getting reused.  My guess is that when ACT says it, they are referring to a title having been removed and if you still visit the URL of a previously existing entry, it'll be a blank entry of some sort.  It wouldn't show up in any list since it'd obviously be flagged as not being in use.

@Wolfie​ Yeah, it was @ACT_1 who used the term "blank" title pages. I think that's an imprecise term. When I saw @ACT_1 using the word "blank," I interpreted "blank" to mean that there actually is an entry at that title page but it lacks any data (by analogy, like a blank sheet of paper.)  But I think what @ACT_1 means by "blank" is that a specific number is unused for a title (by analogy, there is no piece of paper at all). 

None of this resolves my questions, though, involving the actual number of titles actually in the database. By all outward appearances, and unless someone can prove otherwise, that number appears to be 9,629,194 titles and counting (rapidly approaching 10 million).

@ACT_1​ Thanks for clarifying, but I still think "blank" is not an appropriate word for this type of example either. I would refer to a title like this as "incomplete," not "blank." Indeed, it is largely incomplete. But at least it has the title/name/date, so it's not completely "blank." 

By analogy with my paper examples, this is like a sheet of paper with a subject line and date, but nothing else. So not completely blank, but rather largely incomplete.

Maybe. The title of this thread is about IMDb reaching 10 million titles. I believe I have established that IMDb will achieve the 10 million mark (for actual listed titles) fairly soon -- probably about one month from now. I'm not sure what else there is to be said on the topic, unless anyone is contesting my prediction.

@keyword_expert​ if you are a contributor you should have access to https://contribute.imdb.com/dataset the Contributor Datasets. The interesting one here is title.basics.tsv.gz which has a header line then one line per title. The files are refreshed daily according to the readme.

The current version of that file has 8,773,132 lines. Subtract one for the header and that gives a count of 8,773,131 titles.

I do not know why your search gives a larger number.

Interesting. I wasn't able to get the whole file loaded up on my end, but I will trust you on the numbers.

That figure of 8,773,131 titles is more in line with the official stats page (8,744,296 titles as of Dec. 2021). 

It does remain a mystery why the "not keyword" search gives the higher number (currently 9,637,878 titles). All I can think of is this search number must somehow include title values that are not (or no longer) in use, similar to what @ACT_1 was suggesting.

Maybe I will start up a new thread on this exact question, after all....

Hello, on February 9, 2022 I downloaded the file title.basics.tsv.gz from the dataset at https://datasets.imdbws.com/

This data set is missing all of the titles in the Music Video category.
Can you please fix this so that these appear in this dataset document?

But if he means the Music genre, that may account for as many as 471,708 titles. That would be a good chunk of the ~900,000 titles I have noted as a discrepancy between my keyword search and the official results (as of Dec. 2021).

There are at least four different options, all of which yield a different number:

(1) The official stats page: 8,744,296 titles (as of Dec. 2021)

(2) The title.basics.tsv.gz file: 8,773,131 titles (as of yesterday)

(3) The combination of all titles type searches, as discussed herein: 9,835,250 titles (as of today)

(4) The ""not fake-keyword" search: 9,645,659 titles (as of today)

(1) Is accurate as of December 2021, however, hundreds of thousands of titles have been added since then; the page is updated quarterly so is due an update soon

(2) Is accurate for the titles which it includes (the new title types are not included in this file as covered in the other thread)

(3) Is NOT accurate. Your assumption that there is no overlap in the title types is incorrect, sorry.

(4) Is accurate, covers all non-adult titles, and is continuously updated as new titles are approved. 

So to answer your question, if we include adult titles, then the most up-to-date count of unique live titles on IMDb is actually 9,919,667 (at the time of writing) and can be obtained via a modification of the query you used in #4 -> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=!fake-keyword&adult=include

We learned very quickly that an extra digit would be introduced at the front of the nconst, so the same will apply to the tconst.

Yes, that same point was made earlier in this very thread with regard to the number sequencing for titles.
