Updated FAQ Experience

We are pleased to announce the release of our updated IMDb FAQ. As of today, we are improving the look & feel of the FAQ, bringing the experience up-to-date with other parts of the IMDb web site. We have temporarily disabled the FAQ contribution experience which is currently available to only a small group of IMDb users. We will bring it back in the coming months with several improvements. We'll update this announcement once those improvements are live. In the meantime, we have created a temporary new form here: http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/report_faq that you can use to submit FAQ requests for review and processing.

If you haven't looked at IMDb's FAQs before, here are a few good examples: The Matrix and Inception

The decision to make these changes was made only after careful consideration and was based on data quality, coverage, and usability. IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our users to engage with our content and we appreciate your continued support of IMDb.

Hi, ACT_1. Why are you being so cynical? O, wait. Who am I to ask? I guess, I'm just being the pot that called the kettle black.

Hi, ACT_1. You'll have to ask bj_kuehl about that. O, wait. That might be a tad difficult to pull off in the absence of private messaging and voluntarily-presented contact information. Surely you've asked this question before, right? The FAQ data has been around a long time.

It was made over thirty years ago, you can't get it on DVD, it's never been released on VHS,
and it doesn't screen on cable, but everyone remembers "Sole Survivor" (1970)
a made for TV movie starring Vince Edwards, Richard Basehaart and William Shatner.

Wow. Nearly all of Bertaut's work (albeit extensive information about English history) has been obliterated. All of the links to other sites have been removed despite contributors' pleas for the contrary.

The character entity reference for the em dash renders as "—" (the markup form) instead of "—" (the presentation form). It was not even at least converted to " - " or "--" in the transition from the old platform to the new. The same manner of failure has likely affected a number of other character entity references.

By "character entity reference", I'm referring to alphanumeric identifiers (preceded by "&" and followed by ";") used in HTML, XML and SGML (and related markup languages) to indicate letters, numbers, symbols and other computer characters, as referred to in the perhaps non-understood IMDb GS topic "Rendering of Standard Character Entity References in the Systems Replacing Swikis" and as discussed with Owen Rees in the topic "Support for Unicode" tagged (perhaps mendaciously) as "under consideration".

Looks like the issue with the markup symbols has been resolved in regards to title FAQ pages. Thanks! (This has yet to be addressed in regards to Plot Synopses and Parents Guides, though.)

Apparently key-link references to IMDb character pages (like [link=ch0099041], for example) in the old FAQ system's (BBS-like) swiki markup did not survive the transition from the old platform to the new, in a proper/lossless manner. It's like the regular expression /\[link=[^\]]*\]/g to "", was lazily applied. There must have been several dozens or hundreds of links like this scattered across the many title FAQ pages, so there is a strong chance they have all been ruined.

I'm very happy to hear this. Finally, every section of IMDb is free of wikidness :)

No rest for the wikid.

Marco, I hope the only thing you have against wikis is the fact that edits are unscreened and wind up published before being evaluated, because the most awesome aspect is that edit histories can be viewed by editors. The fact that only the IMDb staff can view edit histories for the content on the IMDb website is kind of a drawback. It's a layer of "anonymity" that no editor really deserves.

That's exactly why I think it's better if IMDb doesn't use wikis.

Besides me, it doesn't appear that anybody who has an IMDb GS account actually cares about this topic. I don't understand that. We only imagine how many IMDb contributors are too stubborn join this secondary site. I might have joined sooner had I know that ideas can be conveyed here better than then could through the Help Desk or the decommissioned boards system. The other contributors who do not approve of the outcome have no presence here.

I've never really looked at this part of IMDb before, but it reminds me of the Headscratchers/Fridge section of TVTropes, ie a place where you can ask questions and people take note of things that they think of when discussing the film.

I don't know why it's being disabled, but as long as it can come back it's okay.

"I've never really looked at this part of IMDb before" ...Yeah, a great abundance of visitors have never looked there. The search engine optimization rankings are not too high either, as hardly any other sites reference the title FAQ pages found on IMDb.

I recon lists, polls and trivia pages receive far more hits that title FAQ pages, putting this at a lower priority. You can tell from the earlier replies to this topic. Another issue that the transition from the swiki to this new thing likely presents an incredible challenge.

The FAQ feature is now back and open for contributions (including questions only such that other customers may answer them)
