IMDb Redesigns List-Like Pages

IMDb Redesigns List-Like Pages

                                                     Image

We are excited to announce the launch of IMDb’s redesigned List pages! These pages are meant to make your IMDb experience easier and more enjoyable by providing a modern, clean presentation of information with 3 different viewing types available (detailed, grid, compact) on each List page tailoring to both written and visual preferences. We have also improved mobile navigation making it easier to view IMDb features on the go. These enhancements reflect changes suggested by IMDb customers, as well as our own in-depth research designed to enhance entertainment content, discovery, and navigation.  For more information about the redesign you can review our List Page FAQ.

We hope you enjoy these latest improvements, and thank you for continuing to make IMDb the world’s most trusted source for movie, TV, and entertainment content.

We’re excited to share the most recent improvements to list editing to make managing your lists easier and more efficient. We have reintroduced pagination on the list editing experience, so you can now view up 250 items per page with seamless navigation across pages. You can select all items on a page for quick actions like copying, deleting, or moving items to another list. We are also continuing work on bringing pagination back to the list viewing experience as well.

If you have any questions or feedback, let us know!

Marvelous, thank you.

If we can get it to image galleries too it would be even more marvelous.

How do I revert to the previous list style? The new one is cluttered and largely defeats the organizational purposes of my lists.

I also don't understand why the metascore is so prominent. I'm on IMDb, not metascore...

1. When editing, you can't see the full text without clicking on the specific option.
2. You have to expand the description every time you want to write text.
3. The pictures are arranged inconveniently for counting, and they are asymmetrically placed.

It's not user-friendly for poll makers.

WHY?

Indeed.

Another problem, not related to polls, it is very hard to navigate if you have lists with hundreds of entries, if you want to go lets say to entry #756 in a list with 2,000 entries, you have to click a lot to get there, instead of the previous format with pagination which was more friendly, also, in the previous case, if you click to see the comments and then you close the image, you go back to the #1 entry on your list instead of the number you were working with.

The formatting works, but when we use color tags, it's no longer possible to see the colors in list format (it used to be possible). The colors only show up once the list becomes a poll.

@Jessica Thanks, so on https://www.imdb.com/list/ls082726558/ here's how the first entry in the list looks in the OLD list interface:

which matches the NEW one, we are therefore unsure of the problem?  Others entries are the same -- this does not appear to be a change with this launch, and this was not raised during the extensive public beta period either.  Are we missing something here?

Correct, this was not a change with this launch, but happened several years ago.

I guess the real question is: is it possible to restore the visibility of colors in lists?

@Col_Needham

Let's begin by stating that our comments were focused on much MORE important aspects than color. I used color as an example to illustrate that no improvements were made from the previous version. However, if you prefer to compare with the old version, the colors worked well in the old old design.

I still waiting for answer to my 3 points:

1. When editing, you can't see the full text without clicking on the specific option.
2. You have to expand the description every time you want to write text.
3. The pictures are arranged inconveniently for counting, and they are asymmetrically placed.

I can't see the whole text unless clicking on the specific option:

and we need to go back to 5 photos in each row, and with the same size, NOT like this:

Thank you Michelle, the description full text in edit mode is very very important. Without it we can't continue to creates lists and polls.

The new design makes IMDB incredibly difficult to use when trying to see where movies are streaming.  This is very frustrating when going through my list of movies, I have to click on every single movie.  I don't understand taking away such an important feature on the lists.

@dwhite1144 This feature is still available -- the same watch options are available via the [filter] icon to the left of the "Sort by" menu at the top of the list. You will need to scroll down a little to reach the "Where to Watch" section ...

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham While I do appreciate the tip, and I do find it helpful, I do not think this is better considering it is one of my main uses for IMDB.  It is MUCH easier to have the streaming information present in the details of the lists.

@dwhite1144 Thanks for clarifying.  You can access the watch offers on an individual title via the “(i)” icon to the right of the card for each title.  For example,

Also, if you switch your list to grid view, there’s a more convenient “Watch Options” button under each item, click the “nine dots” icon at the top of the list:

Hope this helps.

I live in the US. The Streaming services I use include Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Paramount+, The Criterion Channel, Kanopy, Watch TCM, Peacock, The Roku Channel, Tubi, Shout Factory, Plex, and FreeVee. Only a handful of those are mentioned in the streaming options displayed on IMDB. JUSTWATCH displays dozens more besides those.

I love and have grown to depend on the IMDB list feature, but I pretty much ignore the streaming services recommendation part because there are other services (e.g. JUSTWATCH and REELGOOD) that do that better.

Since we have to deal with the list redesign, it would be helpful if there was a way that we could jump to a certain spot in the list instead of having to keep scrolling through. This is a huge issue with the endless scroll design, and a major disadvantage over page views, where we could just put a page into the URL and begin where we need to begin. I make long lists, and it's frustrating that I have to scroll to the bottom of the page 45 times to get to number 4501 when I used to be able to do this in a matter of seconds.

Adding a feature to let us immediately get to where we want to go would save a lot of hassle on our end, and earn the site back some much-needed goodwill after this largely unpopular update.

@List_o_mania Thanks for the feedback.  As mentioned in the FAQ, we are looking at how large lists (100+ items) are paginated or can be searched.  This is both in edit and view mode.

In the meantime, for large lists you may find the IMDb mobile apps better suited for your needs.  I frequently edit lists with 1,000-8,000+ items on the iOS app.  The latest version of the Android app now better supports list editing.

Hope this helps.

Some of your users (like myself) do not use mobile devices.
Many people still prefer to use personal computers to access internet applications

because of their superior internet interface.

I personally think it would have been better to resolve these problems before implementing
the new version to avoid impacting PC users with large lists.

There has to be a better way to add entries to lists. Why is the bar to add names at the very top when the name is added at the bottom? Do you see how unbelievably inconvenient that is for the user?

44 Messages

I'm sorry to be complaining so much, but this redesign has made editing lists nearly impossible. The drag method of moving items up and down the list simply does not work on a long list. There is too much information on the page for the feature to work properly. I have a computer with incredibly high RAM, so I can't imagine how much worse this feature is for most users. I can't just type in the number I want the item to go to because it's difficult to even scroll up the page, and even if it wasn't, that would require reloading the page every time I needed to move an entry.

This redesign is fundamentally broken for any long list. I understand that the endless scroll method is the direction the site has decided to go in, but I highly recommend reversing this change, at least until you can deliver a version of this design that works properly. I know I'm probably screaming into the void here, but if you actually do take user feedback into account, please listen to this and any other complaints you receive. All that you're going to achieve with this change is to drive users away from the site.

Why is the bar to add names at the very top when the name is added at the bottom?

Thanks for the feedback.  If you want the new items to appear at the top, please flip the list order in edit mode to newest first via the arrows at the top (to the right of the “Sort by” menu):

Also as mentioned in the FAQ

Can I set/change the order each list opens?

Your ratings list opens in "Most recent" order. All other lists open in "List" order and you can reorder individual items in each list via the "Edit" menu. We are investigating options for list order to be "sticky" such that, each list opens in the order which you last used.

Hope this helps.

We are unsure what you mean here, sorry.  Based on feedback from the beta testing, the edit feature should place you in the old editing interface if you are editing a large list (100+ items).  If this is not the case, please provide the URL of the list affected and ideally a screen-grab.

On lists with less than 100 items (ie: the new editing interface), there are two ways to reorder the items as described in the FAQ:

How can I reorder items in a list?

Open the list in edit mode and you can EITHER drag any item to its new location unsing the "six dot" menu on the right OR use the "down arrow" menu on the left of each item to manually specify a new position for the item.

If the drag-and-drop is not performing smoothly, we recommend following the steps on https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/common-issues/why-is-imdb-displaying-differently-on-my-browser/GF2ZAR69V859XLHF, especially trying different browsers.  In all of our tests, it performs well across a number of systems of varying scale and power.  Note that the speed of the drag-and-drop is deliberately under your control so if dragging an item off the top or bottom of the screen is slower, try moving your mouse cursor lower or higher on the page, as appropriate for faster movement.

Hope this helps.

@List_o_mania Only a certain percentage of customers (and web browsers) see the new version at the moment.  This is part of the normal testing and roll-out process, so it is possible for one of your browsers to be on the old version and one on the new.  However, whichever version you are accessing, if you edit a list with 100+ items then you ALWAYS get the old edit interface.

I originally found the new format to be a bit less aesthetically pleasing than the previous version, but I'm getting used to it.

I also noticed two cases of lost or degraded functionality but later discovered that one of them (using the find command to go through a list by date or decade) has been replaced by the new filter feature (one thing I really like about the new format).

But there is one case of degraded functionality that bothers me, and it is the same one mentioned by Pencho15 above with regard to large lists. By replacing multiple pages with 100 entries per page with the YouTube playlist style single page that adds entries as you scroll downward, you have inadvertently made it take much longer to scroll to the bottom of a large list. I should mention that if you used the <PREV> and <NEXT> options to scroll through a list with the previous version it still took a long time, but there was an easy trick for getting around that. All you had to do was change the page number in the URL and it would immediately take you to the first, last, or whatever page you wanted to go to. Without that trick, scrolling through a large IMDB list is now as clunky as scrolling through a large YouTube playlist.

I can not believe that you guys decided to implement the new design, despite everyone telling you it sucks. And then I'm specifically talking about that it's now one huge list, instead of separate pages. I need to ask you guys, what's wrong with you? Wil you guys give an option to only show 100 titles per page?

I will now for sure never take a look at all of the lists that I've created, because it only creates stress. I also can not use my old bookmarks of the lists that I made. This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, webdesign is getting worse and worse in general, it's an alarming trend.

Hi Michelle, I somehow missed this reply, it's such a horrible forum system, IMDB deserves better. And yes, pagination is a must have because these huge lists are the dumbest thing ever, very unhandy. And perhaps you guys can also implement a more compact view. I don't really like the new look wit the bigger movie posters. A zoom percentage of 85% to 90% would be nice.

One of the reasons why it's so unhandy, is that I often mail people new versions of the list when I add movies or series. So then I can simply mail them the last 100 entries of the list for example. And it's always sorted by List order. So I hope you guys will soon implement pagination, it's a must have! And thanks to Rex_Ressel for the support buddy!

@Navin2000 Please can you explain what you mean here:

I often mail people new versions of the list when I add movies or series. So then I can simply mail them the last 100 entries of the list for example

It is possible to send a link to people which will show them the most recent entries first.  For example, here’s my Watchlist which shows in list order with this link (really oldest added to newest) -> https://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/watchlist/ but if I want to flip the order and share it, all I need to do is click the arrows to the right of the “Sort by” and the URL updates to https://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/watchlist/?sort=list_order%2Cdesc which I can then share with others, and they too will see the most recently added first.

Similarly if I wanted to share the same list by the number of votes -> https://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/watchlist/?sort=num_votes%2Cdesc

Are we missing something here?

Hi Col,

I think I understand what you mean. You can indeed simply change sort direction, but this means that entries are not in the order that I like. The newest additions should always be the last on the list, and this is simply not possible without pagination.

And to give an example of your list. The order that you added your last four entries were:

13: The Musical

Aftershock

To the End

Gentle

So personally I would like them to be listed in this exact order (from left to right), yet this is not the case obviously.

BTW, can you give a time-frame of when pagination will be implemented? It's seriously so annoying. I mean I have a list of almost 1000 of my favorite movies, and when I add movies I can only see them by changing the list order. Or I will have to keep scrolling or course, which is kinda ridiculous.

Did you understand my explanation of why I think pagination should be added? I do not want to reverse the list order just to be able to see the last titles that I added. I like to use the original sorting.

For example, like I mentioned, I have a list of almost 1000 of my favorite movies, and I had bookmarked 10 pages (entries 1-100, 100-200 etc.) but now I can't use those handy bookmarks anymore because of this silly continuous scrolling stuff.

Thanks for the reply, I wonder where Michelle and Col Needham went? Or perhaps they simply do not get any notification about my new posts, because this forum is horribly broken.

But anyway, Michelle said they were looking into it, but I hope that it won't take months before they implement pagination. I can't understand they thought that continuous scrolling was an awesome idea, without any possible disadvantages. At least give an option to turn it off. And thanks Niall Hassett for the likes.

@Col_Needham

Another major reason why continuous scrolling is a horrible idea for me, is because I always save my lists. Obviously a page with only 100 entries doesn't produce a big MHTML filesize, it's about 5 MB. But imagine having to save one huge list of 1000+ entries, it's way to heavy for most PC's and browsers having to load this.

Luckily, I saved my lists before IMDB changed the design. But when I make changes to my lists, I like to save them again, but now it's not a realistic option because of continuous scrolling. Can you imagine that when I want to save my lists in the normal list order (not reversed), I actually have to scroll 1000 entries before I get to the last added entries? Does this make any sense to you, know what I mean? I hope it doesn't.

So what is the status of this? It's now months later, and still no sign of it. Of course I'm talking about the much requested pagination feature.

For example, I have made this list of 980 titles, and sometimes I want to quickly see entries 500 to 600, in the past you could bookmark this stuff, and navigate directly to these entries, but now you have to keep on scrolling.

After using the new IMDB list format for a day I'd like to say that there are two new features I really like:
1. The Filters feature. I was originally going to complain that removing parentheses from the release year made it difficult to find years or decades within a list (I would often do a find on something like (1957 or (195 to skip through a list sorted in IMDB rating sequence) but the Filters feature makes that even easier. I also noticed other filters that I thought could be useful.
2. There are now two ways to move entries to a different position when editing a list: The drag and drop method which works best when moving them short distances, and the line number method which works best when moving them long distances. However, the line number method wasn't immediately obvious so some people might have missed it.

It appears to me though that there are three problems that should be addressed:
(It is my understanding that the problem of the vanishing notes has already been fixed.)
1. The problem of the single page list replacing the multi-page list making it take much longer to scroll through large lists, both when viewing and editing a list. This problem could be resolved by adding a feature that would allow you to skip to a specified line number.
2. The problem of the "select a movie to be added" field being moved to the top of the list while where the new movies are added remains at the bottom of the list. In my opinion, this is the biggest problem because it makes it extremely difficult to add multiple new movies and position them within a large list. For each movie you add, you have to scroll to the top of the list to select the movie and then scroll to the bottom again to position it within the list. To resolve this problem they need to move the "select a movie" field back to the same end of the list where the movies are added.
3. The problem of the streaming services no longer appearing in the list view. This particular problem doesn't affect me so I will allow others to advocate for its resolution.

I would like to add the problem of seeing a truncated notes field when using the new editor to my list of problems that should be addressed. I hadn't noticed that myself yet, but it would make editing some of my lists difficult because it would limit my ability to use the Find command to find data within my notes fields.

I get error massage when I try to go to my lists: Potential Dictators in The Cartoon World & 20th Anniversary: Twelve Monkeys.

What do they both have in common? Both lists have images deleted from IMDb.

So now if I want to seen my lists or re-push it and fixed my polls I can't.

@Boromir

Bottom line, most of us who chat on forums like this access IMDb and other sites 80%+ of the time from a notebook or desktop; but an ever-growing majority of the general population primarily or exclusively access the web from their phones, and that's what IMDb is catering for here.

@Boromir Thank you for all of the links.  Two examples would have been enough to trace the bug, but we appreciate the more exhaustive list.

@NYVKE
Unfortunately, the majority of the users of services like IMDB, Spotify, YouTube, etc. now are cell phone addicts who don't know how to use a PC and believe the internet is some sort of magic thing that their cell phone service provides for them. (One of my wife's friends contacts her cell phone service when she has a problem with Facebook. After all, they were the ones who installed that app on her phone for her.)  Also unfortunately, as you mentioned, it is these casual users that these services now cater to because they are the majority. They may or may not recognize what Boromir was getting at: that these casual users are not the ones who use functionality like the IMDB list feature. They aren't the ones who create IMDB lists or Spotify or YouTube playlists. The ones who do that are the more advanced users: the list-makers, the historians, the true film and music fanatics. But these services don't care as much about those users anymore, because they are the minority now. That's why when they redesign something like the IBMD list feature, they don't care about degrading functionality or making the feature more difficult to use for the users who actually use it. What matters to them is cosmetic changes that make the feature more visually impressive and easier to use for the casual users who don't use the more advanced features anyway.

The reason that services like IMDB, Spotify, and YouTube get away with constantly making changes that many of their users don't want is they have far superior databases than any of their competitors. This gives them sort of a monopoly which makes it unnecessary for them to try to please their users. Many of their users are dissatisfied but they don't leave simply because they currently can't find a better alternative. Personally though, I think they should learn a lesson from MySpace. MySpace was a popular social media platform about fifteen years ago. It looked great, was easy to use, and their users loved it. But then they decided to totally redesign it. They turned it into a piece of dung that their users hated. And about that time Facebook came along. Now MySpace is pretty much dead. Does anyone here remember it?

Can you please put genres back in the list in detailed view? I don't want to have to click (i) every single time just to see which genres it falls into. I want to have a quick idea of what kind of show/movie something is as I'm scrolling through. As I'm not searching for specific genres, the genre filter isn't helpful here.

This is the only major issue I have with the new list redesign.

When I look at another user's list, I no longer see that user's other lists in the section to the right, like in the old version (you could see the 5 most recently updated lists by that user).

Now I always see my own lists (More to explore  -> Your lists).

Is this something that can be fixed?

There should, at the very least, be two options:

1. to view the page as one long list OR in pages

2. to view the list in a condensed form that IS a properly condensed list, without all the data taking up vertical space.

The present form CAN be fine for SOME purposes, but it has eliminated other uses. I can see how this might be fine for casual users, but again, more serious users should have the options to suit their purposes.
