Live Poll: Lord of the Rings: Books or Films

This poll is not asking your opinion on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but rather which version you were first introduced to. Did you read J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings book trilogy before seeing Peter Jackson's film adaptations?

I wasn't too familiar with the trilogy prior to Peter Jackson adapting it. I did alt least know about The Hobbit, though.

@Jessica ,

I read War and Peace in high school during a weekend for honors history.

I bought a copy of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy in college over 40 years ago. I read the first chapter of Lord of the Rings, but wasn't able to finish for a variety of reasons. I still have these books.

I saw Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. animated version of The Hobbit (1977 TV Movie) and Ralph Bakshi's animated version of The Lord of the Rings (1978) when they came out. Both of these movies soured me on The Lord of the Rings until I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).

From the options you offer, I would have to choose:

I read the books before seeing the films

@dan_dassow That must have been some weekend when you read War and Peace. I read slowly so I would not be able to do it over a weekend unless I didn't sleep and if I didn't sleep, I probably wouldn't remember much, lol.

I've definitely crammed books in several times for school but nothing at all approaching the length and scope of War and Peace

If you've only read a small part of the book(s), I'm not sure it counts as reading the whole trilogy.

Hi Jess, good poll!  I read 'The Hobbit' in middle school but I don't think that I ever even knew about the 'Lord of the Rings' books before the first of its movies was released so the film came first for me.

Looks like richwald slipped in an unsolicited advertisement on us and hasn't posted anything else.

I first saw the films, then I decided to read the books chronologically, and started with The Silmarillion, which I managed to finish but was so complicated that stopped me from immediatly reading the rest.

After that I read The Hobbit before the release of The Hobbit trilogy, but I have not read the three main books yet.

@Pencho15

Interesting.

I saw the films before reading the books, but I think I read them ten years or so after the movies came out.

but I have not read the three main books yet.

If so, your answer should be #3 (I have only seen the films and not read the books).

I saw films first and loved them. Sometime later, I decided to read books, and I have no regrets.

Even though I know what will be happening, books are so interesting and I think are more "rich"
