Live Poll: Ireland at the Oscars (Updated)

Ireland will have quite a showing at this year's Oscars. Which of the nominated movies or actors from Ireland do you think is most deserving?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls564870087/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/zD8Z0ClvJ4s/?ref_=po_ho

Note: I will edit the tenses in the introduction and descriptions if it doesn't go live by Sunday.  It's been updated and I think it's ready.

Just a thought, the poll title, Ireland at the Oscars implies the poll has an all-time scope, when it is limited to the current year, wouldn't Ireland at the 2023 Oscars be better. It also would prevent any confusion, if someone choses to do a poll suggestion with an all-time scope in the future.

@urbanemovies Hi Urb. I was kind of thinking of the title in a "Ireland in the house!" kind of way. My first reaction is that "Ireland at the 2023 Oscars" kind of sanitizes it a bit, as if there's nothing so noteworthy about this year. I feel like "at the 2023 Oscars" gives the impression that you could swap 2023 for any other year. Thank you for your suggestion, though, and I'll certainly consider it. It's true that leaving the title as it is does perhaps put the onus or burden on another poll author who may do a broader poll at some other time. Is that poll hypothetical or were you thinking of such a poll with the exact same title? If you were planning on the same title, I'll certainly put on my thinking cap and see if I can come up with a different title for mine.

@rubyfruit76 I actually had the idea for such a poll a month ago, but have no plans to do such a poll suggestion. Although, I think there plenty of material to be mined for such a poll from either being Irish themed or directly the product of Irish talent. Poll titles are a hot button for me right now on IMDb, as I think there is so much unrealized potential in the titles that could be used for IMDb polls. Although, I am less critical of yours in this case, you just happened to be the one asking the question.

P.S. I actually like "Ireland in the House!" as a poll title. It is fun, playful and makes me want to click on the poll just to find out what it is about.

I'd like to see some older movies that have never been included on an IMDb poll to be on a list corresponding to a poll suggestion, as this only seems to happen once in a while; likewise for performers with exhaustive filmographies (containing great movies) but who have never been presented as a poll option. As to be expected, emphasis is on movies and television series, but I'd love to see new polls about narrative video games more often. I've never suggested a poll before, but maybe someday in the remote future I might give it a shot.

@urbanemovies Oh hey, I think I like that idea: "Ireland in the House!" as a title -- or perhaps "Ireland in the (Oscar) House!" ... ?

@jeorj_euler Jeorj, you seem to know IMDb so well that I bet you'd make great polls. I'd be interested to see what you come up with. : )

@rubyfruit76 Ireland in the (Oscar) House!" ...

I like that one better. I had same variation thought, when you first mentioned it.

@urbanemovies Thanks, Urb, for your feedback. I couldn't decide between "in the House" and "in the (Oscar) House" so you really helped. I changed the title to "Ireland in the (Oscar) House!"  : )

@rubyfruit76

FYI,

In the end, I ended up doing an all-time Irish Oscar poll, Distinctively Irish Oscar-Nominated Movies.

But, I expanded the criteria to add Northern Ireland and eliminated any titles that were not about the Irish experience. Obviously, nobody would confuse the two polls

I only really know about navigating IMDb's submission interfaces sans the one for movie reviews. I don't really have a confident grasp of what is trending in the cultural zeitgeist within a given month. For the time being, I'm more comfortable with observing others make poll suggestions. I would want to suggest a poll that has a set of criteria so narrow as to only have fewer than fifteen options, so that hard decisions can be avoided, but I'm not sure how to map out the criteria. Some of the filmmakers I've taken an interest in are kind of obscure too. In the future, I might consider suggesting an image poll oriented around one long-running video game franchise or another.

'An Update on my concern discussed in the above response to seoweboptions' post:

I actually had twelve of the fourteen nominations in my list and I found a source that confirmed that Richard Baneham is one of the Irish nationals nominated (for his work on 'Avatar: The Way of Water' in Visual Effects) so I added him to the list with an unfortunately less-than-great photo.  At the end of the introduction, I note an explanation for the one missing nomination, which I searched for again, in all categories and via many different news articles, as well, but to no avail. If I do find the mystery nod, I'll add it.

@seoweboptions I saw this, too, when I was researching this poll. I love that it points out that Irish actors have 25% of the acting nominations and that this year marks the first time a film in Gaelic has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Even though I adored the Belgian film 'Close,' I think I'm rooting for 'Quiet Girl' because it, too, is excellent but also because most of it is in a language that was all but lost to colonization.

The part that is throwing me fora loop is that it points out that Ireland received 14 Oscar nominations this year. I saw this noted by other sources, as well, although none quite as reliable as the very credible Reuters, but no one lists what all of them are. The most specific that I found named or hinted at the eleven that my list has plus vaguely referencing nomination(s) "in Visual Effects." Since none of the films nominated for Visual Effects are Irish, I assumed perhaps they meant three people so I did a good bit of research and the only information that I found that possibly gives some clues as to who those people may be follows:

- Richard Baneham (born in Dublin; visual effects for 'Avatar' along with three other people, two of whom are not Irish and one with not enough information anywhere to surmise nationality)

- Anders Langlands (now lives in NZ; born ?; surname Scottish; visual effects for 'The Batman,' with three other people)

- Daniel Barrett (no info; surname Irish; visual effects for 'Avatar' along with three other people, two of whom are not Irish and one who is)

I don't find this information convincing, though.

Given this, I feel more comfortable leaving the poll as it is than guessing. The poll may be considered a bit incomplete if one includes an Irish individual working among a group of people on a movie that is not Irish. I'll probably add a note.

Does anyone have any other information? Otherwise, does anyone consider the poll to be  incomplete or have any suggestions?

@rubyfruit76

Several articles list Baneham for visual effects and the editor Jonathan Redmond.

Jonathan Redmond from Sandycove, Ireland (a suburb of Dublin). The Irish national film editor seems to work out NYC now. The Irish Times, The Anglo-Celt and other Irish websites all seem to have detailed accountings.

@rubyfruit76 Since the ceremony is over, maybe you should change the first line to a past tense.

And option #1 can be changed to "won for Best Visual Effects".

A better image is available:

Plus, option #6 (Won for Best Live Action Short Film)

@Pencho15@Jessica  Hi Pencho and Jess, I wish I would've been able to update this sooner. In my time zone, the Oscars finish when it's very late and I was too tired to change everything last night  -- and today, I just got home. I'll make the updates right now, though. : )

FYC, they say better late than never. There are some post-Oscar better individual images and Oscar-winning images for some of your Irish answer options, if you are interested.
