Live Poll: When Countries Choose Wrongly
Anatomie d'une chute (2023) is one of the most acclaimed and nominated films at the 96th Academy Awards, but it comes as a surprise that it is not in contention for the International Film Oscar.
The reason for this is that, in order to compete in that category, the country of origin of the film has to submit it for consideration, and each country can submit only one film.
if Anatomie d'une chute (2023) had been submited, it would be the favorite to win the award; instead, the filed is open for other contenders.
It is not the first time that a foreign country submits a film instead of another that ends up beign better liked at the Oscars.
In which of these cases do you think the submitting country made the biggest mistake?

I haven't added The Motorcycle Diaries that neither Brazil nor Argentina submitted as their film since some of its producers were from the United States, does somebody know if they could have submitted it? or was it ineligible for the category?

#2: Although Persepolis got nominated for Best Animated Film it didn't make it into the Foreign Language Film category.
#7: La Dolce Vita

What a great poll! There are so many good examples that it's hard to pick just one, which makes it so much more fun. It will be interesting to see the results. My vote will probably go to Japan for 'Ran' or Germany for 'Das Boot' -- or maybe Italy for La Dolce Vita.
Oh, and Bravo for the great research.
May I suggest two small edits? The whole poll is so well written, btw. : )

Penelope Cruz gave the best performance of that year. And Pedro Almodóvar should have least gotten a screenwriting nod.
RRR (2022) was definitely the worst movie of that year.
Hot take. But Persepolis (2007) is 10000 times better than La Vie En Rose (2007).
I wasn't aware that Japan submitted Out (2002) instead of Spirited Away (2001) as I hadn't really started to obsess about the Oscars until ... maybe next year? And weirdly coincidental, I did manage to read the book Out was based on a year of two later. I hadn't known this was adapted into a movie until now. Since Spirited Away did win best animated feature? I'm fine with that. The Academy would have never given it both the best international win as well as animated feature. It would have one or the other.
