Live Poll: Your Favorite Movie Length?

Intro:

Some people get tired by watching movies with runtimes longer than 2 hours. Other can stand runtimes longer than 4 hours without getting tired. It might depend on the content of the movie. But by looking at these examples, please just try to imagine movies with an approximately close runtime, which were most exciting for you.

So which runtime do you prefer?

Discuss here.

Suggestions:

It's ok, if you suggest movies that are closer to the runtime of them I presented on the list. But I would like to ask you for three things: 1.) They should be very popular, like e.g. the movies from the top 250 list. Also movies that are popular and better have 50.000+ ratings on IMDb. 2.) So I'm not completely ok with Valhalla (option #4). Maybe someone has a better example for 75 minutes. 3.) When you suggest a movie, please try to hit the runtime most exactly. It should match better than the existing example.

As long as the film is good, there are no limits. I have no real preference for the runtime.

Interesting question, if I made this poll I would be tempted to add (as a neutral answer) the admirable quote from the late Roger Ebert: "a good movie is never too long, a bad movie never short enough" which sums it up pretty well.

That said, like I pointed it out before, we live in the smartphone era and unlike the older days, I find myself guilty of checking my phone once I reach the 60-70 minute mark, sometimes to find some trivia about the very movie I'm watching... sometimes because it's a scene that don't need much attention.... I hate that habit but I don't think I'm the only one on that boat. But if a long movie is good enough, it grabs me from start to finish...

I don't have a favorite length but I know one thing: I hate comedies that are longer than 100 minutes, I think comedy needs a short format more than any other genre :)

It depends on which type of Comedy. I don't see Kusturica's Underground being less than 170 min.

Mmmm, it's a comedy but mostly an epic war film about the history of Yugoslavia... I meant comedy-comedy :)

That's what it is about. It depends also on the single member of the audience. I know people which have a attention span of a view minutes. If a movie has "too complicated" dialogues they call it "Laberfilm", which means something like "prattle movie". Examples: 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf', 'Stalker' (Russia), 'Million Dollar Baby'. Some people need action to be triggered. "Laberfilme" will  always be boring to them. They take 'em 5 minutes and then take a nap. Others can sit in cinema for 12 Hours and watch the LOTR-Trilogie in one take. ;)

And I think ElMo is right about the most comedies. Kustrica is an exceptionally talent. If a comedy is too long without being good or at least also having good dramatic parts, it can become long winded. I could add an option which says: "Depends on the genre." would you consider this a good or a bad idea?

I depend on multiple factors. Genres come with a set of codes and habits. Comedy is one of the genres for which might be a bit harder to make long films in Hollywood.

However, I think great directors such as Kusturica, Fellini, Gilliam can overcome those challenges and make a movie of their own.

Another thing that we can't forget is the country of origin. In India for example, most movies exceed 2h30 min in duration, it modifies a bit the narrative structure of films, but it works well, especially in genres like Comedy and Romance.

About 90 minutes for me. Also there is a small typo in your description there: About 90 minutes are enough to tell a good story. I like feature movies in a overlookable lenght.

Please correct:

Your Favorite Movie Length?

Some people get tired of watching movies with runtimes longer than 2 hours. Other can stand runtimes longer than 4 hours without getting tired.

#3: 60 minutes is enough for me.

#4: 75 minutes is a good time to watch for a movie.

#5: About 90 minutes is enough to tell a good story. I like feature movies in an overlookable(?) length.

(I'm not sure overlookable is the right word here)

#7: It covers an evening, the perfect time for me.

#8: About 135 minutes is still ok for me.

#10: About 165 minutes is ok for me.

#14: Up to 225 minutes is still bearable.

Sitting in a dark crowded movie theater for more than 2 hours is .... uncomfortable

Not so bad at home sitting in a large comfortable chair watching a movie on large screen TV

where WE can get up any time for a snack & drink and well, you know...

without pestering others to move out of the way

And WE able to talk out loud to others in the room about the movie and other topics

Too many two hour movies to add some samples here.

Well, the longer a movie is, the better (or more enjoyable) I expect it to be, like exponentially. Sometimes 165-minute-long movies aren't all that they are cracked up to be, and I would rather see shortened cuts of them. I find that 285-minute-long movies tend to push the limit, but I may settle for simply watching parts of them in separate sittings if the experience is worthwhile. In a usual week, I don't watch movies everyday, Sometimes, I go weeks without watch any movie. Thus, depending on the nature of how overwhelmed I am, I will only watch 15-minute-long movies or ones even shorter, rather than feature-length movies that I might only find to be okay in value.

@jeorj_euler

Most of my absolute favourite films fall in the 120 to 180 minute range, but that is because they are so good and have enough substantive content to sustain my engagement.

Otherwise, I prefer films in the 90-105 minute range.

I sort of feel that way about Inception, but using that one as an example, there is undeniably large amounts of time spent on exposition, which makes me not want to watch it too often, even though I would probably watch it more often than all the other Nolan brothers' movies I may happen to like. I've noticed that a lot of epic superhero movies that have come out within the past twenty years are two and a half hours long, and I can somewhat see why. but a lot of them could stand to be shorter in running time, closer to two hours instead of closer to three hours.
