It's good idea for a poll.

No one ever suggest it?

@Boromir,

I couldn't find any. I think it is a good idea too, as the whole genre was built on the public's fascination with space travel. It just popped into my head that movies could be classified into groups this way, when I was looking up something last night, in advance of National Space Day. I was trying to figure out the dividing lines between inner space, outer space, deep space, and other space distance classifications.

I could use some more examples of space travel movies that feature intergalactic space travel or travel between two different galaxies. Any suggestions?

These movies would think have to feature one or more of the these plot devices: some type of faster-than-light propulsion system, use of wormholes, long-term space hibernation technologies, multi-generational trips or some other device to travel the great distance between galaxies. A couple of the movies that came to mind like Planet of the Apes (1968), Passengers (2016), Voyagers (2021), seem like possibilities, but the movies don't go into detail to be sure.

At first glance I didn't notice that you divided it into types, I thought it's general.

it's amazing poll.

Not sure yet how to vote.

@Boromir,

Thanks. I am happy with the end result. Any comments to make it better would be appreciated.

In response to your earlier comment, I think that it is one of those things that seems obvious, but only after you point them out.

It also seems like a simple way to sort, but it took me a while to think out the dividing lines and how they would apply to actual movies. I had to come up with a couple of versions and made more than a few revisions to account for most of the special cases. Even then, I wasn't sure how to classify 'The Wandering Earth' movies, where the astronauts never leave the planet, as the Earth is their traveling spaceship (which I guess technically the Earth is constantly traveling throughout the universe already, just not being mechanically powered and steered with a defined direction).

It may be obvious without the classification, although no one created it also -so maybe it's not so obvious.

On the other hand, your poll is very creative. The fact that you built your own typology based on real information is extremely impressive.

@Boromir,

Thanks. It took a little bit of effort to get the explanations right and to make sure they were explained clearly. The three more distant classifications, Interplanetary, Interstellar and Intergalatic, are natural classes, IMHO. The Earth-based, Earth-orbit, and the Intercelestial subgenres standout when you start thinking of all the other movies that didn't fall into the farther space travel movies.

I didn't see the sense in separating the moon movies, asteroid movies and meteor movies, so grouping them together as celestial bodies made sense. Since, so much of our current space travel, so far, has been orbital space travel. A group dedicated to real-life and fictional movies that feature space stations and orbital space travel seemed like a natural fit. Lastly, I think space journeys include liftoff and landings, so an earth-based subgenre is needed. I think the space travel scenes in movies like, E.T., Close Encounters, and GATTACA count. Even if space travel is limited to a liftoff scene, earthly travel for the astronaut, or space travel is more part of the backstory.

I appreciate the comments and encouragement. I do agree it gets you thinking about the topic, a topic that in reality most people don't spend hardly any time actually thinking about. So, what may seem obvious to others, may not be obvious to all. I am proud the poll gets people thinking about the topic and educates them at the same time.

@Scholle2008 Thanks, I haven't made my choice yet. It seem even though there would be common elements in each group that writers and directors have to work with. There are more than quite a few stand-out movies in every space travel subgenre, IMHO.

@urbanemovies , et al,

An oxygen relief valve problem in the rocket's upper stage caused the mission to be scrubbed.
