Live Poll: The Bookkeepers of Death

Intro:

In some movies, the karma of souls is ballanced by a bookkeeper of moral. In most of them the bookkeeper is shown as some kind of devil, in others he even might be friendly. He is there to help the soul(s) deciding which way to take and where to go at least. Sometimes he "helps" when they are still alive, but - anyway - his mission's end is most of the times inevitable for the delinquent's hereafter.

Which of these movies containing a bookkeeper of death is your favorite?

Tell us here.

(This list may contain spoilers because of the poll's subject.)

Suggestions:

Movies, in which the delinquents should seen being living and talking before hereafter. Please only movies rated 5.0 and higher. Animated ok, except animated tv-series. no documentations, musicals, games, or tv-series/shows. Look at the examples and try to remember them. Bookkeepers like these.

If the intro doesn't fit and there are objections about the choice of words, the grammar or a better description, I'm open to it. I know it can also be worded as "accountant", but I thought the English word would match better for the subject. That's because in the bible the ones who will survive are written into the book of life. I'm not gonna be religious with that idea, I'm just pointing out that most of that movies contain a religious moral vision as an example. Others of them don't.

A pretty funny one. I've put the reaper and the salmon mousse on the list.

The subject of Ghost is very similar, close to the idea, but not.

The Bookkeeper should be a hereafter (or devine) entity, or at least be a representative of the hereafter powers. A representative of the hereafter powers in movies can also be a still living person like in 'Mortuary'. It's often that in movies entities use human bodys to do their sinister work. Like the personification of satan in 'Ghostship'. But the cause to be active should not be simply human thought revenge and actions like in 'Ghost'. The actions should be caused by a higher than human power. In 'Ghost' the higher or darker powers are just shortly presented, embellishments. And the ghosts are just lost souls each searching for their haven, but not finding it.

Macario (1960)

El orfanato (2007) -

This is a little known Mexican film, but i you don't care about number of votes, 'The Lady of the Dawn' from the title is a spirit that comes to take the main character to the afterlife.

Thank you Pencho. I see interesting picks you suggest. I guess they all match the criteria.

I only know 'Meet Joe Black'; an extraordinary good example.

Just remember I saw 'The Orphanage' about 10 years ago. And what stays in mind are these movies that have the biggest impact on the viewer. So it lastet in my mind, but not dominantly.

Macario is the first Mexican film ever nominated for an Oscar, and it is based on a famous short story. Macario is a peasant visited by "death" because his time has come, but he shares a chicken with him and he gets extra time in the earth receiving also the gift to heal people. However, each time he visits a patient, death is present, and it lets him know if he is allowed to heal the person or if their time has come, and he must obey each time.

The Orphanage made a big impact on Me, I wasn't going to suggest it at first, but it has some similar elements to The Others and Sicth Sense which you already considered.

Hi Breu, what a cool idea for a poll! My vote would go to The Seventh Seal or The Sixth Sense.

The intro is also very good. May I suggest just a few minor edits? (in bold)

In some movies, the karma of souls is balanced by a bookkeeper of morals. In most of them the bookkeeper is shown as some kind of devil; in others he even might be friendly. He is there to help the soul(s) decide which way to take and where to go at least. Sometimes he "helps" when they are still alive, but - anyway - his mission's end is most of the times inevitable for the delinquent's hereafter.

Thanks! 'Such an interesting poll. : )

@mariojacobs

I've put the movie on the list. I remember Last Action Hero.  But not proper, because it might have been 20 years when I last saw it. Can you tell me a little about this bookkeeper? Just a few keywords?

The figure of Death from the film The Seventh Seal, who had been brought to the real world, appears before them. Danny holds Death at gunpoint, but Death clarifies he was simply curious: Jack Slater is missing from his lists of when people will die. Death then suggests searching for the other half of the ticket. Danny finds it and is able to take Slater back into his movie, where his wounds instantly heal. Danny returns to the real world before the portal closes. A recovered Slater then enthusiastically embraces the true nature of his reality when he talks to Dekker about his new plan, appreciating the differences between the two worlds.

I just saw the scene. Ok, not exactly what I got in mind, but it fits with the criteria somehow.
