Poll Suggestion: Who is Your Favorite Stoic Character from a Motion Picture?

Which stoic character, a person who shows little to no emotion, from a motion picture is your favorite?

Suggestions welcomed and needed.

(you know I had to put Marcus Aurelius!)

No Robots or androids.

Clint Eastwood would qualify in a lot of his movies as he doesn't usually say much except through facial expressions.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Be never says anything in most versions of A Christmas Carol.

That said, I'd vote Leonard Nimoy/Spock.

The original was correct (title case). In titles, prepositions are not capitalized.

Who Is Your Favorite Stoic Character from a Motion Picture?

Correct ✅

Back to the Future

The Silence of the Lambs

Dances with Wolves

The Lord of the Rings

The Grapes of Wrath

The Wizard of Oz

Stand by Me

The above titles are from IMDB's Top 250. The bolded words are prepositions.

Here are some titles with "from" in them:

The Man from Earth

Tales from the Crypt

3rd Rock from the Sun

Escape from New York

Escape from Alcatraz

Deliver Us from Evil

Miracles from Heaven

The Man from Nowhere

It is correct to keep prepositions lowercase in a title.

@Calico ,

The IMDb Editors use the Associated Press Stylebook. This is a general guide for that stylebook:

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/subject_specific_writing/journalism_and_journalistic_writing/ap_style.html

When in doubt about capitalization, use this online tool:
https://capitalizemytitle.com/
Capitalize My Title
Enter your title and select:
"Title Case" and "AP".

@Calico ,

By the way, I was also taught in grade school and high school to use lower case for prepositions. I was unaware of different style guides until I had to do a research paper in college. Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is a great resource for the good writing and different style guides.

@riverotter since you included Darth Vader, perhaps you could add Jason Voorhees, Pinhead and Michael Myers...

Haha! Maybe on the contrary, all masked characters should be excluded. Pinhead is very eligible inclusion, of course. When I think about Darth Vader, I'd imagine that he is almost always angry, but yet he rarely throws tantrums, which are mild (outside of Revenge of the Sith) when done. He did seem stoic in the original Star Wars film, only coming off as frustrating when interrogating that Rebel trooper at the beginning. Whereas in the next film, the audience can easily feel his frustration with the Imperial admiral who thought it would be a brilliant idea to try to surprise the Rebels on planet Hoth, but by the third film of the original trilogy, he didn't seem angry at all, just really sacred of his master and tired. Darth Vader is definitely stoic in the sense that a vast majority of the depicted killings committed by him were cold-blooded, like he was running business operation. Ha! The only people who ever really rattled him were his loved ones (including Palpatine, in a Stockholm syndrome sense), and to a lesser extent, sworn enemies like Dooku. Of course, he wasn't too fond of the sentiments the Jedi Council had showed him, before he joined the Sith. To be fair, several Jedi and Sith come off as stoic, like it is a part of their way of life, for both cults/orders.

@jeorj_euler

yeah, maybe masked characters who do not speak, especially.

I have  Darth Vader on the list because he was always stoic in his speech

That's just the thing, though. Darth Vader isn't strictly always stoic in his speech:

  • "Where are those transmissions you intercepted? What have you done with them?"
  • "You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor! Take her away!"
  • "You have failed me for the last time, Admiral Ozzel."
  • "You don't know the power of the dark side. I must obey my master."
  • "If you will not fight, then you will meet your destiny."

However, certainly only one of these lines contains exclamation marks, and the only emotions ever conveyed are anger, frustration, contempt or disgust, never anything like joy, humor or grief.

I'm torn between Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson.

I vote for Charles Bronson as Harmonica in Once upon a time in the west.
