Live Poll: Time Capsule Movies

So, here is an Idea I thought I might pitch to you. In honor of Ingmar Bergman's 105th Birthday (which would be tomorrow, as I write this), I created my top 100 movie List of all Time. The premise is this: let us assume, we would launch a Time Capsule into space, containing 10 defining movies of mankind, which would you vote for?

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls525957545/

PS: I would like to add, that I too would favor at least one Anime (defintely "Perfect Blue" - or Perfect Anime, as I lovingly call this stroke of genius :-) ), so, give me some feedback as to what you think of it. Judging by all the Lists that have become Polls, I don't see why this shouldn't become one as well....

PPS: We can also come to an understanding that a): We don't have to limit it to 10 titles, instead maybe 15 or 20.

b): We should limit it to 1 Film / director - but that might call for an updated list, which would take some time on my part...

@TheTigerInMe1980

Polls are limited to a maximum of 35 options, and your list contains 100 options, so it cannot be published as a poll unless you somehow reduce it.

It may be a good idea to make a list of 10 titles you choose and ask other board users to make a 10 title selection too.

Then you can add each list, represented by one title each as options. That's the way many live polls are done and published.

@TheTigerInMe1980 Hi and welcome to the poll board. : )

Before I even looked at the list, my immediate thoughts were the same as Pencho's. Once I looked at the list, my immediate thought was also the same as another comment of Pencho's: to have your list be considered as a poll, you'd have to make another list with no more than 35 films. You certainly have a very fine list that includes a lot of great films and many of the iconic masterpieces, although my guess is that after thousands of polls have been published since 2014, there is at least one that's incredibly similar in scope and theme. (However, please see ** below.) One way to make it different enough would be to make it some kind of "Poll Board" poll, like Pencho mentioned, which is when you ask poll board regulars to "nominate" either their own list of ten or one or two films each. For example, I noticed what I would consider to be two omissions: 'Do the Right Thing,' and 'Three Colors: Red' so, if you asked for two, those two would probably be my suggestions.

Other thoughts that I had: 1.) I like the idea of a time capsule and ** when I just did a quick search of already published polls, I did not find one that took that exact approach. I also don't remember anyone using that idea before, so that may distinguish yours enough to be considered as a poll. 2.) I love the connection to Bergman's birthday. : )

Hello you two, and thanks for commenting.

@Pencho15: I did not know that polls were limited to 35 options. That alone, of course, would waive my list and cause the creation of a new one - as I suspected. Oh well, it just might be worth the effort after all.

@rubyfruit76:  I once read that they shot a timecapsule in space, containing films as well (so I took that from there), and that capsule included Metropolis - certainly a masterpiece of film in general, and a milestone in german silent films; hands down.

([EDIT]: Strike that, it was another honoration, called Weltdokumentenerbe in Germany (Memory of the World); namely to be the first film listed there.)

But that doesn't nullify my thought.

I hoped, actually, I pondered that no one (or at least very rarely) did anyone consider that angle of a Top Movies List, so I took a shot at it.

PS: When you look at my lists, which are public and you should be able to see them just by following my Top 100 List, you can see why I chose the connection to Bergmans Birthday in my Top 15 Directors List; i.e.: there is a reason why he is listed as #1, and why he has the most titles in the list :-)

PPS: It will most certainly be very difficult to create a Top 35 List, especially when I limit it to 1 film per director, but I could also consider that a challenge...

Let me bump this up again, instead of creating a new thread.

I've, for now, finished my list

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls525957545/

Although let me say the following: It was immensly difficult to choose them. What made it even harder was my selfinflicted restriction of 1 Film / Director, hence no 35 titles.

Concerning "The Human Condition": Many critics and historians view these films as one long movie - and I agree. Therefore, since IMDb lists them as Part I,II and III, my choice of part I is representative to all three. (And if I consider them three fims, even though I've rated them all the same - that is 10 -, my favorite would be part III).

In the end, since I involuntarily left some room for the treshhold of 35 titles, feel free to recommend some of your own. And if you prefer a challenge, try some directors I didn't already choose, but that can hold the can to those, literally, elitist movies that have their seats in the capsule steadily reserved :-)

@TheTigerInMe1980 Indeed, you don't need to create a new thread and you do the good thing bumping this.

In your first post, you will see three points at the top right corner.

If you click there, you can edit your original post and change the link so that your new list appears at the top instead of the original one.

@ Pencho15: Done.

I've included some more films, too. BTW: When can this suggestion be taken to the next step; i.e. when does it become a poll?

And one more question, even though more general in nature I would have asked you personally, but I don't see a Private Mail - Button. This forum is so different from all the others I've joined up in my life... Anyway: What do you, what does the Poll-Staff (right description/title?) think: will this poll get the 100000 votes necessary to create this Pollmaker-Badge - or will this badge be created when several polls combined reach this threshhold? (It sure reads this way on the badge-page).

Because, my general observation is this: the more recent and blockbuster a film, the more votes it gets, which of course begs the question how many potential voters this poll could technically generate, i.e. how many IMDB'ers are there that know all the films I've listed and maybe some more potential equals? I consider myself a cineast, you know, watching movies relatively unknown to a general audience; in the original audio with english subtitles. I just hope there are more of you (my kind, so to speak) registered here than my observation leads me to believe. And in case some of you may get this wrong: No, I do not mean this in a snobbish way. 😉

@TheTigerInMe1980 There is not a specific number of days for this to become a poll, it is reviewed by a group of volunteer users and once it is ready, it will be published and we'll let you know.

All you have to do is keep an eye for comments and suggestions from other users, as they will help you to fix some details, you already have one of those comments by Jessica below.

As for the pollmaker badge, it is as you understood it, when all your combined polls reach this threshold you will be awarded the badge. But it is no easy task and it takes years to achieve it. Alll those who have it are veteran poll makers, we will of course be glad if you join us.

New polls used to have more votes, but after they were removed from the homepage they usually get some hundreds of votes, and after that they take a while to keep climbing as more users discover them. While polls featuring blockbusters might get promoted in other channels and get more votes, there's usually a faithful following of the polls and they are movie lovers so they'll vote for many of not all of those that are published.

If you take some time to navigate and discover old polls, you'll see there is a lot of variety, and alongside the most popular films and awards polls, there is no shortage of polls focused on foreign movies from all around the world, different eras, and actors, and even aspects like the technical aspects of film are suggested from time to time.

Many users in the board also love those hidden gems you may like as you'll discover if you join the conversation on other polls and topics.

Hi,

The title of your list should be short. Please consider using the one you have in this thread:

@Jessica Done.

@Pencho15 Good to know. I do have some more Ideas in store, but, you know ... one at a time.

I've added three more titles, and now I am all out of Ideas for this list. I'll leave the rest up to the others. Of course I'll check every now and then, otherwise I am happy when you let me know once it became a poll...

A poll for technical aspects also crossed my mind. I.e. favorite aspect ratio, black&white or color, etc.

I am already happy that both my pollsuggestions were greeted with warm words. Good seed, rare thought (see rubyfruit76 post here). I would only want to create or suggest polls I myself would vote for, anyway. And I am not exactly a general polltaker - so far I only took 14 or 15 in all my time on IMDb (close to 19 years by now)...

I guess if the Aliens would watch this list, they would kill us instantly. In the movies on this list, there are all sins of humankind united. Not really commercials for human beings. I miss movies like Baraka or Koyaanisqatsi, maybe Life in a day. The movies on the list are just focusing on humankinds most negative habits and characteristics in philosophical intention. War, murder, greed, whatever. ... A view which is concentrated on different facets of human life, but only for humans to center their thoughts on themselves. The aliens would watch a humankind who is all in trouble with itsself. They would get the impression, that we need to view our own problems. How selfish. They would zap us away.

@Breumaster Hail to the Aliens ^^

Humans are far from being without error. I don't see why these movies should not only not include these errors, but make it its mainfocus. I don't really go for the "Happy Day Movies"; I consider Life, and therefore movies representing aspects of the struggle of life, to be far more complex. Ergo: movies should be complex, should be ugly, and yes, sometimes depressing: a mirror of the complexity of life. That's why the list is what it is. You could've suggest some titles yourself. The timegap was, I think, maybe a good week. I know Koyaanisqatsi, and it is a good movie, but that one, too, deals with humanitys errors - rightfully so.

You could even say: humanitys errors and faults, mischieves and betrayals make for far better movies than anything else. Back in the day, the ancient greeks knew that, too. Some of the greatest works of art deals with my prefered point of view (so to speak) than with "the good things"...

@Pencho15 Great :-)

@TheTigerInMe1980 Now that your poll is published. Please edit this thread and move it from the idea to the praise category, where it will be located alongisde the rest of the published polls, instead if the unused suggestions.

You can also edit the title from poll suggestion to live poll.

But I suggested three titles you're totally ignoring. They are far from viewing a perfect world. They provide a sober and neutral look on humankind. More reality like and not so dramatic, but very good. Well, it's your poll.

@Breumaster Only that your suggestions came in after Pencho updated it to poll status.

Can I still edit the polllist now? Can an admin do this? If yes, feel free to add Koyaanisqatsi.

EDIT: I've added it, but it didn't show in the list, so I deleted it again. So I ask again if an admin can do this. If not, leave the list as it is.

@TheTigerInMe1980

You can still add options to the poll even after it is live.

It's important not to change the order of the choices, and the new option must be added at the end of the list.

Please also include today's date in the description field of the new option, so poll takers will know that it was added after the poll was published.

Update (re-push) requests are usually posted in this thread:

Thank you for adding the date in the description field of option #30. This note in the intro text is not necessary and could be removed if you wish:

EDIT: #30 has been added on August 9, 2023, after the list became a poll.

Hi, Tiger. Thank you for putting Koyaanisquatsi to the list. As Jessica wrote it needs to be asked for a re-push on the page she linked. There should be listed four things the admins need for a re-push:

The poll-title, the list-URL, the poll-URL and for usual the reason why it should be updated. New suggestions are normaly accepted. Just if there are already 35 options, it would be denied. But as I know the forum, this reques will be accepted. :D

Thank you again, I'm very ok with that option. I will vote for it. :D

A movie I guess I didn't see yet, or it has an alternative German title. I instantly clicked Koyaanisquatsi in the poll. Thank you for giving me an alternative to vote. I at least one neutral choice is good for people who have not a self-centred view on humankind concerning other species. If it would be like Barbie and Ken in pink clouds, it also would be very very self-centred in a kitschy way. I explicitly searched for movies with a sober view on humankind, so the alien race would get a more realistic view on us. Most dramas are dramatized to show extreme conditions, which shouldn't be normal in life to show up things better. That's ok be me. I like it, but it wouldn't bring a realistic view of us to the alien race. That's just my 5 cents. Thank you anyway. I hope it brings some more clicks to your poll. See ya. :D

@Breumaster I assume you mean THC. THC goes by Barfuß durch die Hölle in Germany.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053114/releaseinfo/?ref_=tt_dt_aka#akas

And eventhough I live in Germany myself, I not only prefer the english title, I also do not recall ever calling it any other way...

But at the end, it comes full circle being a kick in the stomach with one of the most beautiful endings ever created, especially visually. Besides, it is an opus magnum and its high contrast visuals are a sheer beauty to behold; exactly my favorite constellation: Cinemascope, Black & White, Japanese astethics! There is a reason why I rate Kobayashi so highly in my directors list, and this long film (counting all three Parts as one) is one of them. On the other hand, it rightly established Tatsuya Nakadai as leading actor, and he is one of my favorite actors of all time. So you see, this piece of art had to get my vote, even over a Bergman-film, and that is truly saying something: I cannot stress this strongly enough.
