I kinda see where you are going here, but you don't outright do it with your question or answer pool. Just about everyone famous, who is a knight or dame today was likely knighted by QE2, due to her age and length of her realm (even Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor). So, why not ask that question outright and make that direct connection and use her name, instead of the pronoun, her.

Which of these celebrities who were investitured* a knight or dame of the UK by Queen Elizabeth II is your favorite? *knighted between 06 February 1952 and 08 September 2022

Your question should be able to stand on its own. It shouldn't require you to read the preceding paragraph to figure out, who her is.

I checked your answer pool to see if it would match, specifically for the ones I thought would be a problem. I think you listed the wrong Douglas Fairbanks. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was knighted, not his father. Plus, possibly one to two of the three "holy trinity of English actors" would be a problem. Ser Laurence Olivier was initially knighted by her father in 1948. "Olivier's honours included a knighthood (1947), a life peerage (1970) and the Order of Merit (1981)." But, Olivier did get the OM honor, an upgraded artistic knighthood in 1981 from her. The same applies to Ser Ralph Richardson who was knighted the year before. "Richardson was knighted in the 1947 New Year Honours, to Olivier's undisguised envy." Richard "became the first actor of his generation to be knighted. He became Sir Ralph in 1947, and was quickly followed by Laurence Olivier in 1948, and then by John Gielgud in 1953." Only, John Gielgud was initially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of the three during the second year of her reign.

I think if the intention is to honor Queen Elizabeth, you need to limit the pool to her investitures only and ask the question outright by using her name in the question.

Hi, urbanemovies.

I enhanced the list with datas and I modified the question for also use on commanders and officers. Can you tell me, if there are things which are still wrong or written false? Please help me check if the datas are right. I rely on the wikipedia database, but you seem to be fitter in knowing UK. Again thank you for your input. There is one slot left. Do you want to give me your favorite candidate for this poll idea? Thank you in common. :D

@Breumaster I believe there are five British orders for the arts, only the top two most senior orders qualify for using Dame or Sir in one of 15 realms formerly under QE2.

  • Knight/Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
  • Knight/Dame Commander (KBE/DBE)

"The order is limited to 300 Knights and Dames Grand Cross, 845 Knights and Dames Commander, and 8,960 Commanders. There are no limits applied to the total number of members of the fourth and fifth classes, but no more than 858 Officers and 1,464 Members may be appointed per year."

I would add these two giants in the entertainment field to your answer pool, both held or hold membership in the most elite general knighthood class, the Order of Merit. The Order of Merit has only eighteen members currently and is limited to twenty-four living members. I changed my mind about including Olivier, since he received the most senior order of knighthood, the Order of Merit from QE2 in 1981. He was already a British knight before QE2, but I think this second more elite knighthood award from QE2 justifies his inclusion.

"Ser Laurence Olivier was initially knighted by her father in 1948. "Olivier's honours included a knighthood (1947), a life peerage (1970) and the Order of Merit (1981)."

QE2 Dames Maggie Smith, Harriet Walter and Agatha Christie all belong too. I would lose some of the lesser known or lower order ranked men (like Jacobi & Hawthorne) on the existing list to make room for them or split the list into a female and male versions. You will have at least twenty-five well known people, if not more on both lists.

Please help me to eventually add data, if I missed something. I was not sure if I should write

"The Order of the British Empire" or "the Order of the British Empire". Because it's a title,  I wrote it capitalized within the sentence. If that's wrong, please tell me so. I'm unsure with that.

There is still one option open. Maybe someone wants to help me fill it. If all is ok,

I'd say: Ready to go!

@Breumaster ,

Wikipedia is generally very accurate regarding matters related to Royal Family.

According to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire

... the title of the award is "Order of the British Empire". If "the" is at the beginning of a sentence it would be capitalized; in most of your usage it should be "the Order of the British Empire".

"Investiture" is usually not a verb. "Honor" or "appoint" is better.

Thank you all for your input. I will try to change it withing a day.

@Peter_pbn :

I will change that.

@dan_dassow :

I will change that. Thank you for the help.

@urbanemovies :

For the very high celebrities you suggested: I will add them instead of minor decorated celebrities. Thank you for that. That's very useful and completely makes sense.

Thank you for the very useful suggestions. When it comes to the several grades, I won't go to much into detail. I guess many other users around the world can't see a difference between the different grades. I tried to get as exact as possible as a person not living in the common wealth and think it's close enough. But if you want me to make it even more detailed, I need your help in any option to make deeper differences. I woud appreciate, if you could help me with that by then giving me the text of each option. (Which needs to be more dtailed)

@Breumaster I don't think you need to be more detailed than the notes you have, just the abbreviated grade and year only. I just gave you the background for your information. If it were me, I would use the higher grade and higher fame to weight the field and use it to determine who gets cut on a single list of the top thirty-five.

@Breumaster, some notable male Commanders of the British Empires (CBE), Order of British Empire (OBE),  or (MBE) if you chose to split the list. They are worth mentioning since many are young and will probably go on to receive a higher order award (Sir), later in their careers. I count with suggestions 31 males for their own poll suggestion, I sure you already omitted four men for space considerations, so it would be no problem to max this one as your part one suggestion.

Thank you very much. I'll work out the TWO lists. (second list)

There is a reason why I made up two lists now. The first is, that I don't want to kick so many good people of the first list. and the second is that you suggested so many also very good people that I can make up a second list. Maybe you have some others to complete that second list? I'll work it out. I hope I don't need so much time, but I also try to be correct, so it's check and re-check for me. I won't only take the highest investured on the first list to make a dull second list, both lists should be equal quality somehow. Consistant. So e.g. there is one of the two Beatles on one of the lists. They won't get into competition among each other.

I guess there are a few more investured celebrities. Do you have some for me?

@Breumaster All four of the Beatles garnered some order of the British Empire, but only two were of the more senior order and allowed to call themselves knights and use the Sir designation. I am still advocating for a male and female seperated lists. The copy and move feature on the lists would make it easy to seperate them that way.

It is not hard to envision George Harrison and John Lennon being knighted, if they had lived longer. Especially, when IMHO, Ringo would likely would have been the last to achieve the honor and he was knighted.

The problem about a separated male and female list is, that there many more males than females. Then it would be three lists.

@Breumaster, Another ten women candidates from the British Empire to bring the total of females to thirty-four candidates (mostly dames). I get the feeling with fifteen realms out there, there are still some big names being left off these lists (like the Companion of the Order of Australia)

Nicole Kidman's, Geoffre Rush's and Mel (honorary) Gibson's QE2 honor from Australia). Maybe a search by each realm for its most famous actresses would be a good idea. I also leave it to you to set the cut-off on which order levels on up will qualify for inclusion.

IMHO, I think the male-female split is the best way to divide the list to give the women fair representation, otherwise each list will become a two-thirds male dominated list. I also think sorting them by order is a bad idea too. Since, you will not have that many celebs in the top orders and too many in the lower orders, as I explained before. The copy and move feature on the lists would make it easy to seperate them that way.

The  Order of Australia is an  honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service.  It was established on 14 February 1975 by  Elizabeth IIQueen of Australia, on the advice of the  Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received  British honours.

I put Iris Murdoch on the list because of her biopic, written by her husband, John Bayley and the six for six tally for the principals in this movie.

Broadbent won Best Supporting Actor at the 74th Academy Awards, with Dench (Best Actress) and Winslet for (Best Supporting Actress) also receiving nominations for the biopic. Hugh Bonneville was not nominated for an academy award, but is a QE2 crown appointed deputy lieutenant, one of several deputies to the lord lieutenant of a lieutenancy area. The other three actor and actresses and the two authors themselves have been offered some award level of Orders of the British Empire. (Broadbent was offered an OBE in 2002, but he declined it, stating that there were more deserving recipients than actors.)

@Breumaster

1) Click edit list

2) Check boxes of the items you want to move or copy

(I prefer copying instead of moving, then mass deleting the excess, it is and extra step, but safer in case you mess up somehow)

*Also, your notes will transfer over, it is good to use one poll suggestion to make another and cut the workload by not doing everything twice.

3) Select Move or Copy

4) Select List to be Copied or Moved to

(Scroll down, it likely will be near the top in this case)

5) Click Save (Transfer will Flash Green Complete)
FYI, In this case you could just copy #1 to #2 in whole, #2 to #1 in whole, then both lists would have every option. Then just relabel the titles with the revised parameter and cull the excess options that do not fit the scope of the new label.

Thank you for explaining. Meanwhile I've thought on your idea about splitting the list into genders. Now I also think it could be better then. So I've split the first two lists into dames and knights and a third list has all the members, officers and commanders (all genders.) I'll consider your newly suggestions as well. Again - you're great help. Thank you! When it goes online, it's also your poll as well. :D

@Breumaster On some topics that have multiple possibilities, I do the same.  As you can see from my example, I label it a MASTER LIST(ie Purple Hearts honorees, DC characters, Star Wars characters, Marvel characters, etc.) and use that list to spin other poll suggestions out of and then I don't have to duplicate the work again

FYC, I would change the titles to something like:

Queen Elizabeth II Appointed Celebrity Dames,

Queen Elizabeth II Appointed Celebrity Knights,

Queen Elizabeth II Celebrity Junior Appointees

I think you can easily top off all to thirty-five options (see suggestions): the Dame, the Knight and the Junior Order answer pools by searching the other realms for dames, knights, junior order appointees specific to their own country or digging deeper into ones for the British Empire. I am not suggesting this, but there are more than enough candidates to split the junior orders by CBE, OBE or MBE levels (although the lowest level seems a bit skimpy right now). A pair I would definitely add is Winston Churchill for his QE2 given Order of the Garter knighthood in 1953 to the knight list and Margaret Thatcher for the hers in 1995 (It is one of the most rare and elite British knighthoods given).

As for the third list, you need to remove #15 Hugh Bonneville from the junior order list, his crown appointed DL is something altogether different. #14 Jim Broadbent is on the list, but he turned down his OBE in 2002. You need to make a call to either drop him or add the correct circumstances to the notes. The two other Beatles could be added to the junior list possibly. George Harrison turn down an OBE in 2000, but kept his MBE from 1965 and John Lennon got a MBE in 1965 too, but eventually returned his MBE (all the Beatles recieved MBE's in 1965). You could still list these three with notes, but need to make some calls and add circumstances to the notes. George Harrison's MBE is the only one that three does not have some circumstances surrounding it and was accepted and kept. #21 Nicole Kidman is probably on the right list, even though her AC is currently the highest Australian Order that can be given there was a more senior Dame Knight level available for a short window of time, but it coincided with when her award was given. I also would read the specifics of the AC order on Wikipedia to make your call.

I was surprised by some of the people who have never gotten an award, like nobles Christopher Guest, Audrey Hepburn and Vivien Leigh and non-nobles that seem both worthy and accomplished enough to earn one. Plus, it is kind of cool to see the Dark Lord himself, Darth Vader  made the list (see David Prowse MBE below).

Another set of QE2 Knight and Dame appointments: Sir? Bob Hope (honorary) and Dame Flora Robson.

Just a thought, you could make the final #35 option an everything else option or Another Queen Elizabeth II Appointed Knight or Dame Not Listed option to cover anything missed or left off for space considerations.

@Breumaster Why would you have to make more lists??? Your female only #1 list is already limited to Dames+ and your male only #2 list is already limited to Knights+. You just need to change the titles, unless I am missing something.

ERRORS

Again, on your third list, #21 Hugh Bonneville does not belong on these lists. He has never received any level of the Order of the British Empire or another knightly award (honorary) or otherwise. Also, #14 Jim Broadbent is on the list, but he turned down his OBE in 2002. Commanders of the British Empire, Rowan Atkinson and Colin Firth would make fine replacements in their stead.

I just meant, that if you bring more and more Dames and knights I would have to make more and more lists, because they are limited to 35 options per list. In the case of the Officers and Commanders I made up a fourth list, if you got more suggestions. :D

@Breumaster

On your third list, #30. Michael Redgrave seems misplaced. He is a Knight Bachelor and you seem to have grouped those on your second list.

As for the third and forth list, I think it better not to split them arbitrarily as a #1 and a #2 list. I would split them male-female again or use the levels, Commanders of the British Empire and Officiers of the British Empire. They are pretty evenly split with about twenty each, splitting them both ways and easy enough to fill out.

As I recall, the only suggestion I made was for a female and male list and later a Dames only and Knights only list.

As for the titles, I suggested such as this or that. I meant for you to come up with your own spin. I do think it is a improvement over the original ones being shorter and communicating the scopes better.

FYC, I do not see any errors that jump out at me on any of the lists, assuming your dates and honors are correct. I took at shot at re-phrasing your questions with a couple tweaks to be more exact.

Dame

Which of these celebrities appointed by Queen Elizabeth II a Dame of the British Empire or higher is your favorite one?

Knight

Which of these celebrities appointed by Queen Elizabeth II a Knight of the British Empire or higher is your favorite one?

Jr. Female

Which of these female celebrities appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, a Member, Officer or Commander of the British Empire or an equivalent commonwealth appointment, is your favorite one?

Jr. Male

Which of these male celebrities appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, a Member, Officer or Commander of the British Empire or an equivalent commonwealth appointment, is your favorite one?

I wouldn't create any more lists, but to fill out the Knight and Dame lists, I ran into some big name sports, business, entertainment, politics and military figures who received honorary awards from QE2.

I would not kick any real knights or dames off for an honorary one, but if you have some open spots, an attention grabbing big name like Spielberg, Mother Theresa, Kevin Spacey, Bono or Pele, seems like a good idea.
