I don't think Ratatouille and Arrival are really creature movies.

From Wikipedia:

A monster movie, monster film, or creature feature is a film that focuses on one or more characters struggling to survive attacks by one or more antagonistic monsters.

@Jessica

Indeed I see it the same way. Also Superhero movies with creatures, I wouldn't se as a creature movie at first. Some options don't fit. For example: An American Werewolf in London is a creature movie, The Thing is a creauture movie, because the creature is the main part of the movie and in The Thing, there are also humans that turn to creatures, but the creature itself is the main attraction. I wouldn't call Remy a creature, I'd rather call him a nice rat or at least a friendly being. Creature movie's core mostly is about scaring the people with monstrosities. Maybe I would also call The Critters a movie about creatures, or Gremlins, maybe. Tremors, King Kong. He is an ape, but what an exaggerated kind, pure fantasie. The big starfish in The Suicide Squad is a creature, but the movie isn't a creature, but a superhero movie.

I don't know what happened in the comments below. When I replied to you, my comment appeared three times so I tried to delete two, but now suddenly all the replies seem to have vanished, including Jaf's updated list. Sorry.

Edit: looks like most of the comments are back.

You wrote:

"Done. I was unsure about Harry Potter, but ok, there is a little amount of magical creatures in it. I wonder about why we wipe Fantastic Beasts of the list, but we keep Potter? It's very close. I told Vandurath to wipe his Harry Potter from his list. He was so kind to do. That must fit for all, then!"

My reply:

I don't think the Harry Potter movies qualify, because even though they do have creatures, the whole "creatures attacking humans" isn't the focus of the plot. The same goes for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers and Dune: Part Two.

I'd say Hotel Transsylvania and Underworld are acceptable. Zombies are barely creatures, more like sick people. Also for I am legend. I let it count, if there aren't any further objections. I let the community decide and put Hotel Transylvania on the list for now. Thank you for re-doing. :D

@Breumaster and @jaf_ismael

The definition of a monster movie or creature feature is humans struggling to survive attacks from creatures/zombies/aliens.

Resident Evil qualifies.

Underworld may qualify but I'm not sure.

I don't think Men in Black and Hotel Transsylvania qualify.

Sorry, Otter. I'm really late with that. I simply missed your post, but Ive put your excellent picks on second place, The OldJalapenoman is on first place, because I wanted to start the list with some real classics and 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' seemed to be the best example to me.

  4. Jurassic Park (1993)
  5. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

I forgot about The Birds (1963).

The Wikipedia definiton states that the creatures "may be man-sized, like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or abnormally large ones, like King Kong or Godzilla." but it doesn't rule out smaller creatures. And the birds do attack the humans (same as the Mogwai in Gremlins), so I guess it's OK.

New list:

  1. Alien (1979)
  2. The Birds (1963)
  3. The Thing (1982)
  4. Aliens (1986)
  5. Jurassic Park (1993)
  6. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
  7. Jaws (1975)
  8. Predator (1987)
  9. Jurassic World (2015)
  10. Gremlins (1984)
  11. The Meg (2018)

Well, I somehow came up with 10! Not sure if all of these qualify as creature movies:

1. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

2. Jurassic Park (1993)

3. Alien (1979)

4. Jaws (1975)

5. Jurassic World (2015)

6. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

7. Gremlins (1984)

8. The Thing (1982)

9. Aliens (1986)

10. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Sorry for the lack of variety, I couldn't come up with more movies from different franchises.

It's on everbody's own to show what he/she/* understands as a creature. I think "creature" is a very hard word on a lovely rat like Remy is. But it's not my option. I would consider "creature movie" in it's classical term as a own genre. I don't know if there is such a genre listed. But for my taste it should be listed. Ratattouille also would'nt be a "creature" movie on My personal list. It's a lovely animated Disney movie.

Added, of course. At the end, we could define together what would fit as a "creature movie". Maybe I should set up more exact and strict rules?

Probably best to use the accurate definition:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_movie

13K Messages

 •

@Jessica

That would be the Wikipedia-Quote:

"A monster movie, monster film, or creature feature is a film that focuses on one or more characters struggling to survive attacks by one or more antagonistic monsters. Such may be man-sized, like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or abnormally large ones, like King Kong or Godzilla. The film may also fall under the horror, comedy, fantasy, or science fiction genres. Monster movies originated with adaptations of horror folklore and literature."

There is all within that. Ok, these are the criteria now. I don't see Remy as a creature in that sense. Jafar, you have to think of alternatives to fit the criteria.

4. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (they are attacked by the Basilisk, so I guess it qualifies)

5. Jurassic World

6. Gremlins

7. The Thing

8. Aliens

9. Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (they are attacked by those mutant creatures)

10. The Birds

13K Messages

@Vandurath

Deriving from the definition, I think the Harry Potter Movies don't really fit. With creature Feature I certainly meant the old definition of creature features. Like e.g. The Blob, An American Werewolf in London, King Kong, Nosferatu, Killer Clowns from Outter Space (these are aliens), Predator, Killer Ants, Arachnophobia, The Birds. Also mockbusters like Piranha 3D, Megapianha, Sharknado. Just not really zombies, because it would grow to a pure zombie-show. There are plenty. I also wouldn't define movies from the Hunger Games franchise as creature feature. Sure not!

Then, I'll go with the 1987 Predator in the fifth place and Jurassic World in the fourth, and I'll go with the 2023 Godzilla Minus One in the ninth place.

Gremlins would be number 10 with every other film going up one place.
