Should be real french celebrities.

What the hell does that mean exactly? How are you going to quantify celebrities' status/legitimacy?

I guess...

Claude Debussy

Claude Monet

@Tsarstepan It's usually the fear of not being right, it will pass because after  all, you're allowed to constantly change whom you think is important to you, friend. Decide and not give a crap. Debussy's String Quartet in G Minor is hard to match for a one-off.

Debussy surely is one great frenchman! Could someone please upload an image of Claude Debussy?

The candidates shoould be well known in the world. Even if they are dead for 200 years or something like that, they are or were frequently shown on TV, so Biographies count, too. But it sure is better to present people from today that people clearly know.

Jaques Pepin is close to the border, because there are just three entries of "self". Could you please think of a better candidate? Yves Montand is a candidate for sure! I like his work, he was great!

The first two I thought of are:

(non-cinema) Renée Descartes https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1548818/

and

(cinema) Robert Bresson https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000975/

This doesn't mean that they are the two best at all. Simply, France's history is so long and prestigious. Choosing only two celebrities among the ten thousand who are worthy is impossible.

Descartes: Discourse on Method is a brilliant piece of philosophy. It greatly improved my critical thinking. It pushes me to question everything and work harder toward truths. In this book, he explains how his passion for mathematics comes from a desire to find undeniable truth. It is impressive and inspiring if you know his contribution to mathematics to discover to what extent he was willing to go to find truths. He is one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, yet, it was only a hobby to him. Those "back in the day" all-around geniuses (Leibniz, Goethe) are really impressive, I'm still baffled as to how they managed to excel in everything simply out of their sheer will and hard work. (copy what suits you best)

Bresson: Godard said that Bresson was to French cinema what Doestoevsky was to Russian literature. I believe he was right.

I love your contribution. Added both. I admit that 35 entries may be to less for all great frenchman. But I also think that you had to think very hard about picking only 2 of them. That's what I intended by setting the limit to 2 picks. Everyone should take his or her personal top 2 frenchman. I love our neighbour-country france. I was there in 2002 and had a very good time there. We need to keep up together in these dificult times. Maybe I'll change it to three or four picks, if there are not enough suggestions.

Thank you, mario. You already have 2 of them like any user can pick. If there are not many more suggestions, maybe I later will change the rule to 3 picks, but I first want to wait, if there are further suggestions about. If not, I'll put Mireille Mathieu for you on the list.

Outside of cinema:

Marguerite Yourcenar

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0950315/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Inside cinema. I hesitated, there are too many. As, all the celebrities I named so far are dead, I chose to name a living actress. My pick is going to sound bizarre to those who only watch mainstream films (aka James Bond). It is Léa Seydoux https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2244205/. She has convinced me in the last few years that she is the best "mainstream" actress of her generation, at 37, she is already a monument of French cinema as much as Simone Signoret, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, and Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Adjani.

Of course she was born in Warsaw, but she imigrated, lead the Institute Curie in Paris and at least she died in France, so I'm about to count her as a french. Not by birth, but by choice. What do you think about?

Just curious. Was this an odd aesthetic choice or a list driven code glitch? Trying to copy and paste any of the option text won't grab either the 1 and the 2 from the option's text. So, technically the numbers aren't seen as text in the browser.

@Breumaster Hi Breu! Just wanted to say hello because it's been a long time. I hope you're doing well and I'm happy to see you're still on the board.

When I saw this poll, my mind went right to directors (Truffaut & Godard) but, of those on the list, I'll probably vote for Monet. : )   (Correction: when I can vote, because IMDb is being really wonky for me. An ad for HBO Max keeps covering almost all pages, leaving me unable to see or do much. I'll try another browser and hopefully that will work.)

My suggestions for the list of women:

Physicist Marie Curie

Filmmaker Claire Denis

Oh, I have one question and one comment: since you mention being on screens, does this put an intentional timeframe on the women? For example, Joan of Arc is certainly a French icon and hero but she wouldn't have been on any screens, unless you count posthumous portrayals? My comment is just that I'd suggest using the word "women" instead of "ladies:" "ladies" is sometimes seen as pejorative, however unintentional as I'm sure it is. : )

I just saw that Marie Curie was in discussion before. It was a discussion about her beeing born in Poland, not France and she would have been mariojacobs second pick. How to handle that? Meanwhile I've put Claire Denis on the list as your first choice. We can change that later, if you want.
