Poll Suggestion: IMDb Poll Board's Favorite Running Gag in Film Industry

Intro:

Since the late 1890's movies began to become public and fascinate people around the world. Several contents repeated themselves and many of them are gags, which continued for a while or decades, some even until today.

Which of them is your favorite or sounds the most interesting?

Please tell us here.

Suggestions:

For now one pick per user, sef-explaining. The running gag should have started at least ten years ago and have appeared some times.

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls545545646/

Poll: TBD

Please tell me about. I don't know. Please consider that I'm from Germany and because of that don't know about Alan Smithee. From your state - is it a running gag?

I just read on Wikipedia about Alan Smithee. As I read - if he is funny - I would consider Alan Smithee as a running gag in form of a character. Do you have a fitting image of it? I'd put it on the list as an option. :D

maybe this: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279641/mediaviewer/rm1371511808?ref_=tt_rv

But, again i'm not sure if it is really a running gag. Prior to 2000, directors who used the synonym were very serious.

You know what? I've put it on the list and we'll see if there are objections against. You can always suggest another, if you find a better one and I'd replace it. Now my option is not so alone on the list. ;) Thank you, Max.

"I'll be back" is a catchphrase associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It was made famous in the 1984 science fiction film The Terminator (1984).
Which is your favorite "I'll Be Back" moment?

The question is if that is repeated in other movies to make a running gang over a long time. I guess the Beatles are not connected to that, but I might be wrong. Explanations about could help me to decide. Is the Beatles "I'll be back!" somehow connected to the Terminator's "I'll be back!"? Please help me understand. :D

Sorry,  Beatles "I'll be back!"  is just a joke here

Arnie is not quoting them 20 years before his movies

The question is more like if it is a running gag in the film industry.

For me it seems more like a single joke the Terminator makes.

And I''m not sure if if was connocted in that spirit by the makers.

According to some, but not all movies on mariojacobs' list I could take it as evident that the Terminator's "'ll be back!" started a running gag since then. So I will put it on the list. Thank you, ACT_1

wilderbyfar Thanks for the feedback:
.....
One of the advantages of folding the topic search into Advanced Title Search (ATS)
is that you can also restrict the matching titles
by all of the other ATS criteria,
whereas before those searches were general across all titles.
For example, you can now search for all movies
which involve Arnold Schwarzenegger and the quote “I’ll Be Back

-> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&quotes=%E2%80%9Ci%E2%80%99ll%20be%20back%E2%80%9D&role=nm0000216

Hope this helps.

Perhaps the term 'gag' could be misleading and might cause users to focus solely on comedy, whereas I understand the intent of your poll is to highlight recurring elements, inside jokes, or self-referential nods intended for the audience or the industry at large. Maybe you should use a broader term like: "repeated reference" or "trope" even if you keep "running gag" in the title to keep it catchy.

No problem, in that case, I would suggest the phone number starting with 555, I find this one annoying in a fun way, it's basically the movie telling you it's a movie, well, we know it is but when it's the realism of the story that absorbs you, the 555 tends to undermine the effect ... or maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Lol. You are over thinking. Would you hope that the actors gave out their real phone numbers XD?

Lol, certainly not, but I've always wondered why they must use 555 for fictional numbers, I mean, are the odds so slim that any other combination without 555 could cause issues? Yeah i guess I might be overthinking this.

The usual formula of Romantic movies probably since films exists:

" boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl"

You're right but the model does vary a little, according to the genre:

Comedy: "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl after climactic airport race"

Drama: "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl, girl dies of cancer"

Action: "boy meets girl, boy loses girl during terrorist attack, bad guy loses life, boy regains girl"

Sport: "boy meets girl, boy loses the game, boy find girl's true love is all that truly counts"

Epic: "boy meets girl, girl loses boy, boy doesn't give a damn"

Music: "boy meets girl, girl becomes star, boy loses temper, girl regains independence"

Sci-fi: "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy travels back to time to prevent losing her"

Western: "cowboy meets girl, cowboy loses girl, cowboy regains girl from native tribe"

Horror: "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl's head in a box"

X-rated: "boys meets girls, boys meets girls, boys meets girls"

etc etc

Lol, It was fun trying to associate a film with each one of these sentences.

Comedy: She's Out of My League

Drama: The Fault in Our Stars

Action: Die Hard

Sport: i do not know

Epic: Gone with the Wind

Music: Cabaret (maybe)

Sci-fi: Back to the Future (I do not know which one)

Western: The Searchers (maybe)

Horror: Se7en

X-rated: too many to count

Thank you guys for your interest. It's great to get such creative reactions about this suggestion. But I have to say as long as the editing of the polls is sabotaged like at the moment, I won't continue with figuring out another form of that poll or other polls It's nice that Col Needham tried to help me, but that's not the only thing about the new editing form. The editing of the polls in the new form is really annoying and I don't want to be annoyed in my spare time. You can mention it here, when they have re-done it or made it more bearable. Thank you, guys. :D

@Breumaster Another option you can use with your problem if an incognito window doesn't work for you is using two browsers, for example you are logged in to your account in Edge and you don't log in in Chrome, so you can copy from one browser to the other.

Thank you Pencho. That's useful help, really. But on the other hand I don't want to support that aggressive change-mania. Why change good things to worse? That doesn't make any sense to me. I just saw The Abyss from Cameron again and instantly had a few good ideas, but won't write them down, because I don't want to. I'm p***ed with things like that. Look at the editing of intros. It doesn't make sense to make changes in a ten line text when you got 2 lines displayed, because I want to controll, if the context still matches while writing. Why, why, why can't they first test their work before they release it? I have to do that, too. And if my results don't fit, I stay and make them fit, before I leave it to others. I don't understand that adjustment. (Talking about the work with which I earn my money.)

@Breumaster I understand, I haven't liked any of the changes they have done since the new system came, I'm just resigned to the idea that it will eventually happen to every section of the website and I try to find ways to make it more tolerable.

Hopefully they will at least work on moving the bar to add items from the top to the bottom, I am currently working on a poll and it is really annoying having to constantly move up and down to add items.

The add bar thing is also bad, but I could have tolerated this, if it wasn't sooo much bad changes at one time. All together it's so much too much. Theat's why I called it crap from the beginning on. I still like IMDb. No doubt Col Needham and you tried the best to convince me with good ideas about, but all in all the new design is crappy for me. I like straight words as you see. It's the best way to keep up together by telling truth.
