Live Poll: Face-Off: 'American Graffiti' vs. 'Star Wars'

George Lucas, a visionary filmmaker, celebrates his 80th birthday on May 14, 2024. Although his iconic 'Star Wars' saga is widely known, his earlier work like 'American Graffiti' showcases his remarkable storytelling talent. Despite earning him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, neither film secured the coveted award. Which of these masterpieces could have clinched the Oscar?

I think you probably mean "should have", and maybe it can also be made more clear that you are referring only to the awards that Lucas was nominated for (since Star Wars won other Oscars). Suggestions:

Which of these masterpieces should have clinched George Lucas's Oscar?

or

Which of these masterpieces should have won him the Oscar?

I'd go with the second question.

Alternatively:

For which of these masterpieces should George Lucas have won Writing and/or Directing?

Correction:

Despite earning him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, neither film secured the coveted awards.

The coveted award is the Oscar. No correction needed.

Updated the question. I liked the 2nd question more! Thank you for suggestions.
